It is surprising that anything surprises me when it comes to dating and relationships. I have twenty years of dating, relationship, and being single experience, I have written a book about being single and dating, I coach women and men about dating, communication, boundaries, sex, boundaries, self-worth, and love, and Ive talked my friends through everything . I find it surprising that I can still be surprised. Yet with technology making our world so incredibly new I can.
My latest discovery is the Whatsapp relationship, aka the exclusive texting relationship. Beware it.
Whatsapp is a cross-platform mobile messaging app: Think texting if you never used it. My ex and I broke up a few months ago, and since then I have been dipping back in the dating pool, mostly in Buenos Aires. In my last few months of reaching out sporadically through OkCupid or Tinder , I have found a pattern. We start messaging, and then, the other person asks for my Whatsapp to communicate.
This story starts with a man I met a man on Tinder.
The portrait the book paints is one of low-commitment game-playing enabled by texting. For the most part it seemed chillingly and accurately described.
The situation is extreme, but the situation is extreme in many places. Really, isnt this a global problem, a symptom of our love affair with our phones?

Reaching Feature Phone Users
There are also plenty of people still using dumb phones . Recent data suggests that 590 million non-smartphones will be sold in 2015, and not all of these are going to technophobes. Some are sold to millennials, while others make great starter phones for first-time phone buyers, whether theyre teenagers or seniors.
There are many parts of the world where solid 3G connectivity is still a rarity, let alone 4G or LTE. In addition, mobile phone users need phones that match their budget and will hold a charge for days.
What Can It Do
As well as being free, its also a lot more versatile than SMS. You can send photos, videos and audio files, make video calls and voice calls, leave someone a video message, and more. And all of these features are completely free! The WhatsApp app is also free to download, so theres absolutely no cost whatsoever.
The only way it could cost you anything is if you go over your data allowance. Then your mobile network would charge you extra. Remember: making video calls will use more data than making voice calls or sending messages, so be careful if youre not on a wi-fi hotspot and dont have a mobile package with unlimited data.

Can You Mute A Group Chat
Leaving a group makes quite a statement, as WhatsApp will announce to everyone that youve left the group. If you dont want to leave it but still want a bit of peace and quiet, you can mute the group instead. This means you wont get a notification every time someone messages on the group, and can still read all the messages at any time. No one else will know youve muted it either, as no announcement will be made.
To mute a group, tap the groups name then Mute. You will then have three options: eight hours, one week or one year. Tap one, and for that duration you will be spared all the groups messages. Peace and quiet at last!

WhatsApp is the default way of reaching out to most people here, Pranav Dixit, a Delhi-based tech reporter for Buzzfeed News, told Digital Trends. Its definitely a huge part of my everyday life.
Dixit has experienced this cultural gap in messaging services firsthand. He was an intern at Wired in San Francisco in 2014, and was in the office the day Facebooks acquisition of WhatsApp was announced.
