Dorsey’s Exit From Twitter Reveals Shortening ‘shelf Life’ Of Tech’s Ceo

Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey pledges $1 billion in Square ...

When Twitter’s Jack Dorsey stepped down as the companys CEO late last month, he became the latest example of the tech sector’s CEO-founder governance model outliving its usefulness.

In recent years, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Alphabet’s dynamic duo of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Uber’s Travis Kalanick have all stepped aside for various reasons, leaving an ever-dwindling number of founder-leaders in the driver’s seat at giants like Meta , Tesla and Airbnb .

As big tech companies amassed more scale and influence, these companies have faced pointed questions from investors and regulators about how theyre being run and whether their larger-than-life leaders are really acting in the best interest of workers and the marketplace.

Dorsey himself who was once forced out of Twitter only to boomerang was critical of the founder-CEO role. In his resignation letter, he said the model was severely limiting to a single point of failure. Ive worked hard to ensure this company can break away from its founders and founding.

Twitter has been under pressure from activist investors to accelerate the platforms development and improve its finances something that illustrates the shortcomings of having founders stay too long at the dance, according to critics.

Theres definitely a shelf life to founder CEOs, Travis Howell, assistant professor of strategy at the University of California, Irvine, told Yahoo Finance in an interview.

Twitter’s press release notes that Agrawal was the first-ever person at the company to hold the title of “Distinguished Software Engineer” before he became CTO. As an engineer, Agrawal started out working on the company’s advertising team. In addition to integrating machine learning technology, Agrawal also improved the platform’s algorithms to make more relevant tweets appear in users’ timelines, CNBC previously reported.

His success as an engineer helped spur audience growth at Twitter, according to his bio, and made him a rising star at the company long before taking over for Dorsey.

Since becoming CTO, Agrawal has also worked closely with Dorsey on projects like Bluesky, a team at Twitter researching open and decentralized technical standards for social media platforms that would allow content posted on one social platform to work seamlessly on other social sites, CNBC’s Salvador Rodriguez reported on Monday.

Twitter’s board unanimously voted for Agrawal to takeover as CEO on Monday, while also appointing him to the company’s board of directors. He Will Probably Steer Speech Rules On Twitter

As CEO of Twitter, Dorsey often had to make calls on how much the social media platform should place freedom of expression above other goals, such as protecting the safety of users, both on and off Twitter.

When Twitter banned President Donald Trump in January, accusing him of inciting violence in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Dorsey said it was both the right call for the company and a dangerous precedent to set for the open internet.

As CEO, Agrawal will probably make calls on matters of free speech in the coming years, too, and those decisions will be closely watched. Some of his past comments hint at his views on the matter.

In a 2020 interview with MIT Technology Review, Agrawal answered a question about how to balance protecting free speech and fighting misinformation on Twitter. He said: Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation and our moves are reflective of things that we believe lead to a healthier public conversation.

Agrawal argued Twitters main role in this is not to decide whats true and whats not and to block users or content accordingly but rather to decide which subset of content on the Internet gets brought to the attention of users of the platform in the service of a healthy public debate.
