Millions of Americans are left waiting and wondering when they will see their tax refunds.

The wait may be a long one.

As of September, the Internal Revenue Service has a backlog of some 8.5 million individual tax returns due, in part, to a recent flood of math error notices from the IRS. CNBC reports the IRS has sent roughly 9 million such alerts from Jan. 1-July 15, an increase of 628.997 in the same period last year. The vast majority of these some 7.4 million were related to stimulus payments.

    Why are returns delayed?

In a typical year, the IRS generally issues refunds in less than 21 days. According to its website, however, processing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic means additional delays, particularly for people who submitted paper copies of their returns and e-filed 2020 tax returns that require review.

It is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue refunds for some 2020 tax returns that require review including incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amounts, or that used 2019 income to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS said.

In general returns will likely be delayed if it:

    • Includes errors, such as incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit
    • Is incomplete

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Tax refund 2021 IRS tax refund wheres my refund status update

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The Bureau of Fiscal Services will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, BFS will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • BFS will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then BFS will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, BFS will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund.;But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. BFS will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.
