Resume Headlines Vs Resume Profiles

Resume headlines are similar to resume profiles in that both provide a brief summary of an applicants qualifications. However, a resume headline is one brief phrase, whereas a resume profile is a small paragraph or series of bulleted points.

Remember that resume profiles are different than resume objectives. In an objective, you write about the position you are seeking, not your skills.

A profile is typically not capitalized like a headline is. For these reasons, headlines are even more eye-catching than profiles. Some applicants may include both a headline and a resume profile, using the headline to attract the reader, and then a profile to provide further information.

Show Progress Or Advancement Whenever You Can

Employers LOVE it when you advance within a company, get promoted, etc.

So any time you can show that, do it.

Heres a really simple example from the first recruiting job I ever had. I started as an Executive Recruiter and then got promoted to Senior Executive Recruiter. So I made sure to show this progression on my LinkedIn:

Note that your profile should definitely have more detail than this.

I edited this down because its very far in the past, Im not job searching, everyone knows what the job title Executive Recruiter means, and I mostly want to show the advancement I made and the leadership I started doing here.

But in your 2-3 most recent jobs make sure to put more detail about what your job actually involves.

Aim for around 4 bullet points like I mentioned earlier. The #1 thing hiring managers and recruiters want to see is what youve worked on and accomplished recently.

One more note about showing advancement and progression: This doesnt always need to be an official change in job title or salary. If you had a change in responsibilities , you can still mention it on your LinkedIn and show how you progressed .

When Should I Remove My Linkedin Url From My Resume

Your LinkedIn is an opportunity to tell a richer career story. If youâre not taking advantage of that opportunity, though, your LinkedIn will look more like a neglected front lawn. Take some care to clean up your property before you try to use it as a selling point.

Here are situations you would need to take care of before adding that LinkedIn URL to your resume or job application.

Tip #: Use Your Name In Your Linkedin Url

You want your URL to be as easy to remember as it possibly can be. On top of that, you want to ensure your profile is aligned with, well, you!

For those reasons, you should aim to make your URL some variation of your name. For example, my name is Austin Belcak so some options for me might be:

    • Austin-Belcak
    • AustinBelcak
    • Abelcak

You want to avoid using slang, pseudonyms, numbers, or other random language in your URL that doesn’t align with your actual identity:

Why Add Linkedin To Your Resume

If youre asking about adding LinkedIn to your resume, youre likely looking for a new position. Your resume is a great tool for generating interest in you. Your LinkedIn profile can help you answer the question, Why should I meet with you?

Keep that question in mind as you build out your profile. Does your LinkedIn About section supplement the way your resume begins to answer that question? Make sure it does. Also, make sure your career highlights further build out your story.

Finally, if you have recommendations or endorsements, make sure that they reflect your story. Your story is ultimately your professional brand.

Also, recruiters are on LinkedIn. 87% of recruiters regularly use LinkedIn. 94% of recruiters vet candidates on LinkedIn. So, if you are applying for positions, you can bet that recruiting professionals will check out your profile. If theyre going to view your profile anyway, why not make it as easy as possible for them to find your profile?

How Long To Make Your Linkedin Work Descriptions For Each Job

How to Find and Use your LinkedIn Profile URL on your resume and other documents.

It doesnt. Theres no golden rule here. Some people will read more content if you put it. But heres the thing the goal of your LinkedIn isnt to get them to read every word. Its to make them reply and invite you to interview, right?

They might still have some questions and want to know more after reading your LinkedIn, but theyll see enough that they want to talk. And thats the goal. Theyll find out the rest by asking you questions in the interview.

And keeping things brief will force you to focus on narrowing down your bullets and accomplishments to just the most impressive.

If I told you to include 10 bullets per job, you wouldnt be as selective and wouldnt write great bullet points. But if you limit it to 3-4 bullets per job like Im suggesting, your LinkedIn profile will have nothing but awesome bullets.

Taking the time to trim the fat and put only your best highlights on LinkedIn is going to make you stand out while also making your profile more attractive to read/skim, which is what you want as a job seeker.

The purpose of having both is to show your skills for a specific job as well as your experience and skills as a worker overall.

So you are probably excited by now thinking that adding your LinkedIn URL to your resume is the best resume fix ever but is it really the right decision? Is there anything important you should keep in mind before throwing it on there haphazardly?

Why You Shouldnt Upload Your Resume Your Linkedin Profile

Your intention may be to make your resume available in as many places as possible, but it isnt particularly helpful to upload your resume to LinkedIn. Its redundant and could communicate to recruiters that you dont really get the platform. After all, LinkedIn allows you to dive into your past experiences much more than you can with a standard resume.

When posting your resume, you may be tempted to cover your bases by detailing all of your work experience and applicable skills. However, prospective employers prefer to see more focused and detailed information about you that is relevant to the position they have available. • Secondly, click on the Share profile via button.

Focus Mostly On Your Recent Work

This is one of the key strategies I recommend for what to put on your LinkedIn profile

Now, if youre job searching with no experience, or right after college, this wont matter for you because you dont have a ton of jobs to list anyway but if you have many years of work experience and many past jobs spend more time on your LinkedIn profile on the 2-3 most recent jobs!

So for example, the most recent job could have 4 bullet points and a 2-sentence description above it.

The next job down would have 3-4 bullet points and a 1-sentence description.

    And so forth

Thats not some rule that you have to follow 100%, but its the general pattern you should follow use most of your time, and most of the space on your LinkedIn work history, for writing about your most recent work.
