Time travel has been on many minds lately. Or, at least, on mine. Not necessarily the kind that sends you galavanting through the past or leaping into the future, but rather the kind that makes you feel as though youre stuck in a different time and place. Its the feeling you get when abortion access in the US is set back to what it was pre-1973, when the Environmental Protection Agencys ability to fight climate change is rolled back to a different time, when Top Gun is once again the biggest movie in the world and your favorite video game features the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And also the feeling you get when, for some reason, RadioShack is dominating the conversation.
Oh boy. Is all of this kind of dumb? Yes. But is it also a sign of the times? Yes. It feels like Americas clock is rewinding, and seeing a stalwart business of the 80s and 90s turned into a crypto brand only puts that more keenly in focus. Everything old is new againbut its not improved.
How Does Twitter Work
Twitter is a social networking site in which you can post 140 character status updates, otherwise known as “tweets”, that can be seen by anyone who has chosen to follow you. Within the tweet, you can link to other articles or videos. Additionally, you can scroll through your Twitter homepage to see what other people, who you’ve chosen to follow, are posting. For instance, you can use Twitter for professional use only, and choose to follow industry leaders in your field. Alternatively, maybe you just follow comedians, and use Twitter as a source of amusement.
If you’re ready to get started with Twitter, here’s how it works — don’t worry, it’s relatively simple.
First, . Then, once you’re ready to use Twitter, follow these steps:
Philanthropic And Other Donations
In March 2016, Dorsey fully funded about 600 Missouri public school projects registered at .
In October 2019, Dorsey donated $350,000 to , a nonprofit started by YouTuber that pledged to plant 20 million trees by the end of 2019.
On April 7, 2020, Dorsey announced that he will move about $1 billion of his equity in , just under a third of his total wealth, to Start Small, LLC, and to relief programs related to the coronavirus. He committed to funding relief, girls’ education and health, and . Dorsey has donated $24 million to over 40 different grantees for relief efforts.
In August 2020, Dorsey donated $10 million to ‘s Center for Antiracist Research, founded by .
In May 2021, he donated $15 million in his personal capacity to support relief efforts in India’s COVID-19 second wave. The three were Care , Aid India , and Sewa International .
Suspect And Contested Accounts
In January 2016, Twitter was sued by the widow of a U.S. man killed in the 2015 Amman shooting attack, claiming that allowing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to continually use the platform, including direct messages in particular, constituted the provision of material support to a terrorist organization, which is illegal under U.S. federal law. Twitter disputed the claim, stating that “violent threats and the promotion of terrorism deserve no place on Twitter and, like other social networks, our rules make that clear.” The lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, upholding the Section 230 safe harbor, which dictates that the operators of an interactive computer service are not liable for the content published by its users. The lawsuit was revised in August 2016, providing comparisons to other telecommunications devices.
On May 10, 2019, Twitter announced that they suspended 166,513 accounts for promoting terrorism in the JulyDecember 2018 period, stating there was a steady decrease in terrorist groups trying to use the platform owing to its “zero-tolerance policy enforcement”. According to Vijaya Gadde, Legal, Policy and Trust and Safety Lead at Twitter, there was a reduction of 19% terror related tweets from the previous reporting period .
Twitter Tweaks Its Tweet Box To Ask You ‘what’s Happening’
Following a similar change to its mobile app, Twitter has moved and renamed the familiar compose-tweet status box on its website.
Lance Whitney is a freelance technology writer and trainer and a former IT professional. He’s written for Time, CNET, PCMag, and several other publications. He’s the author of two tech books–one on Windows and another on LinkedIn.
Twitter users struggling to find the box to compose a new tweet will now find it at the top of their timeline.
The microblog-cum-social network tweaked its website on Wednesday with yet another change that adopts some of the style of Facebook. Previously on the left side of the screen underneath your name and various account stats, the “Compose new Tweet” box is now situated at the top of the page right above your timeline.
Further, the box itself has been rechristened from “Compose new Tweet” to “What’s happening?” The new name is certainly more casual and friendly and borrows a tone similar in style to Facebook’s “What’s on your mind?”
The change seems a bit jarring at first, especially if you’re looking for the box in its familiar spot on the left. But the move makes sense since the box now appears above the timeline filled with all the tweets you follow. The new location is also another nod to Facebook, which places its “What’s on your mind?” field just above your timeline.

What Does Elon Want From Twitter
This is the core question thats been building since the news of Elons billion-dollar stock buy broke last week. We still dont really know why Elon bought such a large stake in Twitter or what he wants from the company. If he just wanted a say in how Twitter manages its platform, then board membership makes sense. But being a board member also comes with restrictions there are limitations on how much stock Musk can own and what he can say, springing from a broader duty to act in the best interests of shareholders. If he wanted to muscle the company into a radically different moderation approach, then the restrictions of board membership could have outweighed the benefits.
We still dont really know why Elon bought such a large stake in Twitter
The question is particularly urgent if Musk simply wants to take over Twitter entirely. Any time a rich person buys a significant stake in a company, theres always a risk of a hostile takeover and with Jack Dorsey out and activist investors turning up the heat, Twitter is particularly vulnerable. Musk is no stranger to this kind of financial power play, from his contentious relationship with Teslas founders to Teslas 2016 acquisition of SolarCity. And in strictly financial terms, he has enough money to buy the company six times over. If he wants to take over, he can probably do it.

Problem Three: Growing Pains
And then there’s the issue of user growth. While the above noted smarter recommendations will, I believe, help in this regard, there’s also the matter of getting more people to care about Twitter in the first place, particularly in the case of younger users. There’s no one solution to boosting Twitter’s audience appeal, it’s going to require a range of targeted, intelligent moves that will keep the platform front of mind and keep people coming back to check out the new features and options.
Here’s a couple of ways the platform could look to bring in new audiences .
Integrate Periscope Entirely into Twitter – Recently, Twitter announced that Periscope content will now . That’s great, that’s a big step for both Twitter and Periscope individually, but I think they should go a step further. Periscope should be integrated entirely into the Twitter experience.
By this, I mean no more Periscope. Periscope would just become another tool within the tweet composition window – you want to do a live-stream, you do it on Twitter. Why would that help? Because Periscope’s audience is building, their platform has grown to more than 10 million users watching the equivalent of 40 years worth of video content on the platform every day. Why not have all that engagement on Twitter? That would get more audience to the platform and enable Twitter to show ads to those users – why filter those people off to another app when Twitter would work just fine as a host for such content?
Privacy Security And Harassment
A security vulnerability was reported on April 7, 2007, by Nitesh Dhanjani and Rujith. Since Twitter used the phone number of the sender of an SMS message as authentication, malicious users could update someone else’s status page by using SMS spoofing. The vulnerability could be used if the spoofer knew the phone number registered to their victim’s account. Within a few weeks of this discovery, Twitter introduced an optional personal identification number that its users could use to authenticate their SMS-originating messages.
On January 5, 2009, 33 high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised after a Twitter administrator’s password was guessed by a dictionary attack. Some of the compromised accounts sent falsified tweets, including drug-related messages.

Problem One: Losing Control
One of Twitter’s key problems has been data control. While other social networks, like Facebook and LinkedIn, operate walled gardens where their user data and insights are restricted from public view, Twitter is, by design, the opposite – virtually everything posted to Twitter is available to anyone who wants it. That’s how it has to be – Twitter’s the ‘global town square‘, the place where people go to participate and add their insights into the wider, global conversation, people use Twitter as a real-time pulse of the issues and happenings of the world, and to have their say on those very same issues. But the problem with this is that Twitter’s data is being used by an ever-growing number of third party providers for mention monitoring, share of voice analysis and other forms of tracking, much of which Twitter has little control over and gains little revenue from.
And what’s worse, some of these platforms actually reduce the need for users to visit Twitter proper, as all the data and insights are provided within these other platforms. That then reduces Twitter’s capacity to monetize that audience – and as noted, user growth, both in terms of acquiring new users and time spent on platform, is a major concern for the micro-blog giant.
Twitter As A Social Messaging Tool
Yes, Twitter is social media, but it’s more than instant messaging. Twitter is about discovering interesting people around the world. It can also be about building a following of people who are interested in you and your work or hobbies and then providing those followers with some knowledge value every day.
Twitter works well with other social tools, including Instagram, Snapchat, and Messenger. For example, if you like a tweet and want to , tap the tweet, then tap the icon and choose Instagram Stories. The tweet will appear as part of your Instagram Story. .

Try Advanced Search On Twitter
is a super handy tool that surprisingly doesn’t require an account to use. With its many options, you’ll be able to locate the right tweet or user if the default search doesn’t dig it up.
You can sort your results based on keywords or phrases, add hashtags, filter by language, add which accounts sent it or were mentioned in it, restrict by time, and even choose the minimum amount of likes or retweets.
It’s simple to use once you get accustomed to it, and one of the most powerful tools any Twitter user has in their toolkitwith or without an account.
Malicious And Fake Accounts
Between January and late July 2017, Twitter had identified and shut down over 7,000 fake accounts created by Iranian influence operations.
In May 2018, in response to scrutiny over the misuse of Twitter by those seeking to maliciously influence elections, Twitter announced that it would partner with the nonprofit organization Ballotpedia to add special labels verifying the authenticity of political candidates running for election in the U.S.
In December 2019, Twitter removed 5,929 accounts for violating their manipulation policies. The company investigated and attributed these accounts to a single state-run information operation, which originated in Saudi Arabia. The accounts were reported to be a part of a larger group of 88,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior. However, Twitter did not disclose all of them as some could possibly be legitimate accounts taken over through hacking.
