What Year Was Twitter Made

Don't Miss

When Jack Met Ev

18-year-old allegedly made threats against students, teachers

The true story of Twitter’s founding would be one of the major bones of contention in the power struggle that consumed the first half of its life. Jack, as the ultimate victor of that struggle, got to rewrite history to the point where Twitter users might easily imagine the service sprung fully formed from his head.

In fact, the Twitter story ) really starts with Ev Williams, the shy Nebraska-born coder who created Blogger and sold it to Google for tens of millions of dollars. Ev then funded Odeo, a podcasting startup belonging to his friend Noah Glass, and took over as CEO when Noah was floundering. One of Ev’s first engineering hires was Jack, an even more shy coder kid with a nose ring and blue hair.

When Apple added podcasts to iTunes, Odeo was left without a business model. Jack and Noah got drunk one night Jack wanted to quit and go into the fashion industry. Only then did Noah tease out of him the idea Jack was always spitting out ideas for a service called “Status,” inspired by the status message on LiveJournal blogs as well as by SMS. In Jack’s conception, your status would disappear as soon as you wrote a new one. Call it a proto-Snapchat for words.

Creation And Initial Reaction

Twitter’s origins lie in a “daylong brainstorming session” held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Jack Dorsey, then an undergraduate student at New York University, introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The original project code name for the service was twttr, the disemvowelled version of the word , an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The decision was also partly due to the fact that the domain twitter.com was already in use, and it was six months after the launch of twttr that the crew purchased the domain and changed the name of the service to . The developers initially considered “10958” as the service’s short code for SMS text messaging, but later changed it to “40404” for “ease of use and memorability”. Work on the project started on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message at 12:50 p.m. PST : “just setting up my twttr”. Dorsey has explained the origin of the “Twitter” title:

…we came across the word “twitter”, and it was just perfect. The definition was “a short burst of inconsequential information”, and “chirps from birds”. And that’s exactly what the product was.

Trump Tagged Trump Banned

There are too many milestones in the hideous history of Trump’s Twitter usage to recount here. There were 57,000 tweets from @realdonaldtrump in total, just under half of them during his presidency. They contained thousands of insults and straight-up lies, hundreds of retweeted conspiracy theories, dozens of personal attacks and barely veiled racist tweets that should have run afoul of Twitter’s terms of service, a couple of threats of war, and one “covfefe.”

Still, Jack refused to touch Trump’s account, citing the public interest in letting a president tweet whatever he wanted. Not until May 2020 did Twitter tentatively add its first “fact-check” link to a Trump tweet about a “rigged election.” A “public interest notice” was added when Trump used the phrase “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” in reference to Black Lives Matters protests. All of it was woefully inadequate, and only drove Trump to new lows of whiny victimhood.

On the day of the Capitol attack, January 6, 2021, Twitter locked Trump’s account, and deleted it for good two days later, along with tens of thousands of QAnon accounts. Jack worried about the precedent he was setting. But misinformation about election fraud on social media plummeted by nearly three-quarters that week, and the vast majority of Twitter users breathed a sigh of relief as the service suddenly became a more civil place.

Dorsey Testified Before Congress Once Again On October 28 2020

Dorsey appeared via videoconference at the Senate hearing on Section 230, a part of US law that protects internet companies from legal liability for user-generated content, as well as giving them broad authority to decide how to moderate their own platforms.

In prepared testimony ahead of the hearing, Dorsey said stripping back Section 230 would “collapse how we communicate on the Internet,” and suggested ways for tech companies to make their moderation processes more transparent.

To : Trump’s Rise And Eventual Ban From Twitter

Twitter quickly became the platform of choice for former President Donald Trump, who used it to communicate directly with his base, arguably more than any other president or presidential candidate before, to secure the nomination and pull off an improbable win in 2016.

Politicians are no strangers to Twitter — Barack Obama still holds the Guinness World Record for most Twitter followers — but Trump’s use of the platform was markedly different than previous administrations. His frenetic, provocative and sometimes erratic tweets introduced new words to the online lexicon , had the power to move stock markets and often took aim at those he didn’t like.

News outlets, U.S. lawmakers and even world leaders weren’t safe from Trump’s Twitter barrages, which he used, gleefully, to communicate with his base, regardless of the consequences.

“My use of social media is not Presidential — it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL,” the former president tweeted in July 2017 after taking heat for his Twitter behavior. His penchant for Twitter obviated the need for a traditional press shop and aides often deferred to Trump’s relentless direct messaging.

“You cannot operate a democracy when politicians can easily circumvent any normal forms of accountability that we might get from press or others,” Harvard’s Donavan said.

Trump also figured out how to “weaponize” Twitter, according to Donavan, especially in the aftermath of his loss in the 2020 presidential election.

The use of web 2.0 tools and especially is in full expansion. Twitter has jumped from the personal field to the professional with great success, joining as a means of regular dissemination in scientific congresses. Although initially the tweeted community was small and a few were responsible for a majority of tweets, the progressive growth and penetration of Twitter has made that in recent congresses, these influencers and institutional accounts are no longer the main driver of the use of Twitter in the congresses. Given the global trend, it is expected that tools such as Twitter play an increasingly important role in the management and transmission of knowledge, as well as in the creation of collaborative networks between professionals.

The Origins Of Twitter

Hashtags, retweets, mentionsthese are just some of the terms that are a normal part of todays internet vocabulary, and Twitter is responsible. Twitter is one of the largest social media platforms in the world, with approximately 328 million active userswhich makes it hard to believe that its only been around for 11 years.

How Twitter Started

The origins of Twitter date back to early 2006, when NYU student Jack Dorsey shared a new online communication idea with some of his coworkers at Odeo, a podcasting company. Dorseys idea was a platform that allowed users to share short messages with groups of people, similar to sending text messages. The first version of this platform was referred to as twttr, and was used solely by people who worked for Odeo. On July 15th, 2006, Twitter was introduced to the public. The website started seeing around 20,000 tweets per day in the first months, but this number grew to 60,000 in 2007, when Twitter was a hot topic at the South by Southwest Interactive conference.
