What Year Did Snapchat Come Out

Actually Sexting Isn’t Snapchat’s Appeal For Teenagers

in what year did minecraft come out #minecraft #gaming #funny #foryoupage #minecrafthacks #

This is a key point: some people are sexting using Snapchat, and some of those people are teenagers. But the main appeal of Snapchat is about ephemeral messaging, and the desire to leave less digital tracks, with teenagers having watched the social over-sharing of the generation that came before them.

“When I asked teenagers about Snapchat late last summer, I heard again and again that they liked it because the ephemeral nature of the content allowed them to be themselves to share a weird or ugly or banal picture that they would have been uncomfortable posting on other well-known social networks for fear of getting dissed,” wrote Mitch Lasky in his blog post.

Fellow investor Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital backed him up on that point during an appearance at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference in Berlin in October:

“For kids, the internet is increasingly becoming a place that you cant share, that you cant have fun, that you cant socialize in the way you want to. I think thats really the essence of Snapchat. Its a platform where they can communicate and have fun without any anxiety about the permanence. You hear about kids not getting jobs because of whats on their Facebook page.”

Ephemerality is the key to that, not sexting, and Snapchat has made an effort to hammer that point home, publishing an essay by researcher Nathan Jurgenson on its blog in July 2013 that spelled its philosophy out:

How Did Snapchat Become So Popular

If youre reading this article, you obviously know that Snapchat is a popular mobile app for iOS and Android. The app was founded nearly 10 years ago in 2011 by students of Stanford University. Reggie Brown came up with the idea of a social media app that allows for sharing disappearing photos or videos. Brown approached Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy with the idea. And they all buckled down and started working to develop the best app.

Snapchat doubled their user count in the first year after introducing 10-second videos to the app. It was successful enough to get 50 million snaps a day!

Just one year after Snapchat was released, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, offered Spiegel $3 billion to buy the app. But Spiegel turned the offer down because he knew that Snapchat was one of the hottest apps on the market. And Spiegel was absolutely right. In 2014 Snapchat was valued three times more than Zuckerberg offered a couple of years ago. And in 2018 Snapchat generated $389.82 million in revenue. Pretty impressive, isnt it?

And before Snapchat gets on the very top of the social media world, you can jump onto the bandwagon and start developing your Snapchat alternative for Android or iOS. The trick is to find a feature that will make your app unique.

What Happens Now The Future Of Ephemeral Photo Sharing

Now that Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram are competing on Stories, direct messaging, and content curation, where will social media users migrate? What will be the go-to app? Will it be Snapchat, the innovator of ephemeral photo sharing? Or Facebook and Instagram, the social media giants with a combined user base of over 2 billion people? .

It may seem like the answer is obvious, as Facebook has dominated the social landscape for over a decade now. But while Snapchats growth is slowing in the face of adversity, Snapchat may still have some tricks up its sleeve.

At the end of 2016, Snap Inc. launched Spectacles, a pair of glasses with cameras in the frames so you can record memories from your perspective without a smartphone in hand.

Now in 2017, the company is trying to reinvent television. Video dominates the content scene on the internet, so it comes as no surprise that Snapchat would venture into the television market.

From a marketing and advertising perspective, its interesting to compare which platforms benefit advertisers the most. If theres no ROI, then marketers will be forced to ditch platforms that waste their money.

There is also another issue: No matter what new features and updates Snapchat rolls out, Facebook and Instagram can simply continue their incessant copycatting. With each new engaging capability, Snapchat digs its grave even deeper, providing Instagram and Facebook with a steady stream of innovation and social platform evolution for free.

Snapchat Features And Terminology

Each social network seems to have its own language. Lets take a look at the key Snapchat terminology you need to know to understand how to use Snapchat for business.

Snap: A Snap is a picture or video you send through the app to one or more of your friends. A video snap can be a maximum of 10 seconds long. Snaps are deleted once theyve been viewed by all recipients, unless you add them to your Story, in which case they disappear after 24 hours. Unopened Snaps are deleted after 30 days.

Stories: The Stories section of Snapchat showcases photos and videos that youd like to share with all your Snapchat friends.

Custom Stories: Custom Stories allow groups to create Stories together. You can choose to create a Group Story, which allows specific people to contribute Snaps, or a Geofenced Story, which allows your friendsand friends of friendsto contribute Snaps to a story as long as they are at a specific place.

Snapstreak: If you and a friend Snap each other within 24 hours for three consecutive days, youre on a Snapstreak. Youll see a flame emoji next to your friends name, with a number indicating how many days youve kept the streak going for. Note that chats do not count toward Snapstreaks.

Filter: A Snapchat filter is a fun way to jazz up your Snaps by adding an overlay or other special effects. Filters can change based on special events or holidays, location, or time of day.

What Features Make Snapchat So Unique

Snapchat wasnt released with all of the features it has today. It was first launched as a photo app for sharing disappearing information in 2011. Later on, the app got two new features Chat and Stories.

As you know, the story feature allows users to share photos or videos that will remain visible for the next 24 hours. And it was the chat feature that helped Snapchat move higher on the social media pyramid.

Lets find out what features make Snapchat unique and what features apps like Snapchat should have.

A recent study conducted by social media marketing firm Mediakix revealed that influencers based in North America overwhelmingly preferred Instagram Stories to Snapchat.

They are using Snapchat 33% less and posting 25% more on Instagram Stories. To see how often users are posting on both platforms, Mediakix tracked Snapchat’s top influencers for 30 days. Their findings showed that there’s a significant decline in Snapchats usage as well as viewership.

An analytics provider Delmondo further proved the steep decline of the social media network. They found out that the average unique viewers for every Snapchat story have decreased about 40%. They analyzed a total of 21,500 Snapchat stories from July to November last year to see how well they performed before and after Instagram launched its own stories.

Yes We All Know About The App’s Recreational Uses But Its Initial Popularity Came From A More Practical Place

Hans Zimmer-Interstellar-Where We’re Going

Snapchat–newly infused with a $60 million round of funding–is hiring engineers, bolstering its server space, and adding fresh perspective to its board. The company is valued at $800 million.

In short: Snapchat, a scrappy 17-person Los Angeles company behind an app for sending vanishing photos and text, is growing up. So why can’t our ideas of what the company does–and does very well–step up out of the gutter?

That’s easy enough to answer for anyone who’s sent a disappearing image with something silly or profane drawn on it to a friend. It’s funny. And maybe it’s even a little addictive.

But if you think it’s absurd that a company that just simplifies sending lewd or absurd self-destructing photos is valued at $800 million, you’re completely correct. But that’s not what Snapchat does best–nor is it what caused the app to take off initially, according to sources who study and observe its use.

“One reason it’s become so popular among younger teens is you can use snapchat with an iPod touch,” says Jake Katz, the general manager at YPulse, a youth-market-research company. “Kids who don’t have cell phones or data plans can use it.”

A New York Times overview story about Snapchat contained a telling nugget about how the app’s use spread–starting with a Southern California high school.

Katz has another theory about Snapchat’s sustained popularity amongst the coming-of-age-one-click-at-a-time set.

What Is Social Media

Before going too far into the history of social media, its important we first discuss exactly what we mean by social media. For most of us, we can spot social media when we see it, but we should work to be a bit more specific. A quick Google search for social media definition will reveal countless results, but they will all reflect the following definition in one way or another:

Social media is understood as the different forms of online communication used by people to create networks, communities, and collectives to share information, ideas, messages, and other content, such as videos.

Two things stand out from this definition:

  • Social media must include online communication, meaning the history of social media cannot begin before the invention and widespread adoption of the internet and
  • Social media depends on user-generated content. This is why typical websites and blogs do not get included in the world of social media. Only certain people can post to these sites, and there are significant restrictions on the types of content that get uploaded.
  • Using this definition, we can understand social media platforms to be a wide range of things, such as messaging apps like WhatsApp and Viber, profile-based platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn, video portals such as YouTube, and also email clients such as G-mail. However, there are many other social networking sites out there, especially once you start looking at how people use social media platforms around the world.

How To Use Snapchats Snap Map

When you open Snapchat once you have access to the feature, you can choose to share your location with all your friends, a few friends you select or you can disappear from the map at any time by going into Ghost Mode or not opening Snapchat for a few hours. Alternatively, location sharing is turned off by default and you can leave it that way to just lurk, watching what friends are up to.

To access the Snap Map, you pinch on your Snapchat camera home screen. From there you can scroll around to see where friends are in your city or around the world. Tapping on their ActionMoji BitMoji avatar opens their Story to show what theyre up to, or lets you message them directly to make meetup plans. Snapchat automatically picks an ActionMoji for you based on your location, time of day and other factors.

Outside of the location-sharing element, Snap Map also gives users an alternative way to discover Story content beyond the well-worn Stories feed and the powerful but buried Story Search feature. Users can submit Snapchat Story posts to Our Story to be eligible for their content to appear to non-friends for around 24 hours. You also can see heat colors on the Snap Map to see where lots of Snaps are being uploaded, which might indicate a concert or big event from which youd want to explore Snap Stories.

Snapchat Wasn’t Its Founders’ First Product

Snapchat’s co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy started working together at Stanford University, initially on a website for students called Future Freshman, among other projects. “We would experiment and fail. We must have attempted nearly 34 projects,” Spiegel told the Palisadian Post in August.

The one that clicked was an iPhone app called Picaboo, which launched in late summer 2011, after a friend grumbled about regretting sending a photo from his smartphone. Picaboo aimed to solve that problem with self-destructing snaps, Mission Impossible style.

When sending a photo to a contact, the sender could decide how many seconds it would be viewable for before self-deleting. Even then, people were drawing conclusions about what Picaboo would be used for: “Now we’re not suggesting you use it for sending NSFW photos,” suggested tech blog Shiny Shiny in September 2011.

“In fact we don’t want to tarnish Picaboo, it could be a completely innocent and cute way to send photos to your friends and family. BUT if you just have to get your kit off and take pictures, this is probably the safest way to do it.”

Picaboo, subsequently rebranded as Snapchat, expanded to Android, and added video, as well as the ability to scribble messages on photos before sending them. By 2012, it was ready to become a craze.

The History Of The Snapchat Logo

According to Evan Spiegel, Snapchats iconic ghostly logo was conceived even before its founding. The first Snapchat incarnation was a vanishing image messaging app known appropriately enough as Picaboo. Its unclear whether the name inspired the logo or the logo inspired the name.

Its reported that Spiegel chose the ghostly image to represent the fleeting nature of the images taken via the appseen only once and before the recipient knows ittheyve vanished into thin air in the manner of the friendly ghost that the logo represents.

Spiegel reportedly took only one evening to come up with the logo. After browsing through countless logos of other popular apps to determine what would work and wouldnt, it eventually dawned on him that all logos had one particular trait regardless of the app. There was none rendered in yellow. As such, he thought there could be no better color to use for his own design.

After selecting the white and cheery yellow theme, he drew the last design on his computer, giving birth to an iconic logo in the process. When Snapchat replaced Picaboo in 2011, it replaced many of Picaboos features and shifted the focus from branding to technicality and usability. But one thing stayed intact, though: the phantom-like logo.

    Building The Perfect Beast

One year into its existence, Snapchat upped the ante and the user count by introducing video to the app, which had just started selling in the Google Play store. The videos were only 10 seconds long, but the rollout was successful enough to push so-called snaps to 50 million per day.

In 2013, Snapchat followed up with two new features Stories and Chat. The story feature enabled Snapchat users to post a series of snaps that would remain active and viewable for 24 hours.

Its Chat function helped move Snapchat higher up on the social media pyramid. Introduced in May, 2014, Chat allowed users to talk to one another in the chat window via a live video chat. Snapchat also introduced Our Story, another story function that enabled Snapchat users all over the world to post photos and videos from ballgames, concerts, political rallies and other public events.

Later that year, Snapchat introduced Geofilters, which allowed site users to customize their content and post their location at the time of the post.

2014 was a busy year, as in December Snapchat rolled out Snapcash, a money transaction feature which enables site consumers to send and receive cash from other users, and have it deposited straightaway into their bank account. Also in December, 2014, Snapchat extended its reach into the financial realm with Community Geofilters. Now, Snapchat consumers were able to generate their own Geofilters or simply buy branded filters for their own use.
