How did Snapchat – Get Snap, Inc. Class A Report grow so large and in such a short period of time?
Heres a deep dive into the companys history and why Snapchat, as a company at least, shows no sign of disappearing.
Snapchat Wasn’t Its Founders’ First Product
Snapchat’s co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy started working together at Stanford University, initially on a website for students called Future Freshman, among other projects. “We would experiment and fail. We must have attempted nearly 34 projects,” Spiegel told the Palisadian Post in August.
The one that clicked was an iPhone app called Picaboo, which launched in late summer 2011, after a friend grumbled about regretting sending a photo from his smartphone. Picaboo aimed to solve that problem with self-destructing snaps, Mission Impossible style.
When sending a photo to a contact, the sender could decide how many seconds it would be viewable for before self-deleting. Even then, people were drawing conclusions about what Picaboo would be used for: “Now we’re not suggesting you use it for sending NSFW photos,” suggested tech blog Shiny Shiny in September 2011.
“In fact we don’t want to tarnish Picaboo, it could be a completely innocent and cute way to send photos to your friends and family. BUT if you just have to get your kit off and take pictures, this is probably the safest way to do it.”
Picaboo, subsequently rebranded as Snapchat, expanded to Android, and added video, as well as the ability to scribble messages on photos before sending them. By 2012, it was ready to become a craze.
Whats The Point Of Snapchat
Snapchat was initially focused on private, person-to-person photo sharing, but you can now use it for a range of different tasks, including sending short videos, live video chatting, messaging, creating caricature-like Bitmoji avatars, and sharing a chronological story thats broadcasted to all your followers. Theres even a designated Discovery area that showcases short-form content from major publishers like Buzzfeed.
Snapchat even lets you store media in a private storage area. Other features include the ability to add filters and AR-based lenses to snaps and show your live location on a world map. But the key thing to realise about Snapchat is that it is all about instant communication through your mobile phone. Prior to Snapchat, social media was very desktop-based, and it was all about accumulating data.
For instance, you’d post statuses, tweets, photos, and videos, and you’d have a record of all those things online, so your friends could comment on them and you would all see them forever. Snapchat has changed that. It changed the way we communicate online. With Snapchat, you can quickly send a photo of yourself with a rainbow-puking AR lens applied to a friend, and after they open it, it’ll disappear forever.

Snapchat Is Being Sued By One Of Its Co
Well, Reggie Brown says he’s a co-founder, although the outcome of his lawsuit against Snapchat will rest upon how important a role he’s deemed to have played in the early days of the company.
Brown was at Stanford with Spiegel and Murphy, and in a lawsuit filed in February 2013, claimed to have come up with the idea for “a mobile device application allowing users to send pictures to others that then quickly disappear from the recipient’s mobile device”.
The lawsuit claimed that “this is a case of partners betraying a fellow partner”, and alleged that Spiegel and Murphy had reneged on an agreement to split the ownership of Snapchat three ways:
“Despite the fact that Plaintiff devised the idea for Snapchat and fully performed all his obligations in the joint venture/partnership, the individual defendants then improperly excluded Plaintiff from all participation, profit and interest in the joint venture/partnership, just one month after the Application was publicly launched in July 2011.”
A later filing expanded the lawsuit to Snapchat’s investors, and cited Google chats and emails in an attempt to show that Brown was a co-founder, as well as a text message from Spiegel’s father to Brown’s mother referring to the three students working on their startup together.
We’ve been here before, most infamously with the Winklevoss brothers’ lawsuit against Facebook claiming that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had stolen the idea from them. In 2011, they ended the lawsuit and s.

How Does It Work
Snapchat lets users send images and videos that disappear after a set amount of time. Since its launch, features including Stories, Snap Maps and Geofilters have been added.
In a rare interview with The Telegraph in 2013, Spiegel said: Snapchat changed that perception of deleting something as bad. Online typically you delete something if its bad or if its really embarrassing.
What Snapchat said was if we try to model conversations as they occur theyre largely ephemeral. We may try to write down and save the really special moments, but by and large we just try to let everything go. We remember it but we dont try to save it.
How To Use Snapchat On Your Computer
Snapchat is developed for iOS or Android devices, which means the app isnt really built to use on a PC or Mac. For example, theres no web application Snapchat that has a login for you to browse Snaps and Stories on a desktopunlike Instagram, Facebook, and even TikTok.

Does Snapchat Save Photos
You may think that once snaps expire on Snapchat, they get permanently deleted, but that is not the case. Your photos are actually hidden in your phone’s or computer’s cache and are not eliminated.
Snapchat claims that once photos are expired or viewed, they are automatically deleted. However, when you share a photo with someone on Snapchat, it is first passed through the Snapchat server before reaching the other device.
This means that your photos can be held on Snapchat’s server for up to 30 days. Additionally, you can check the following methods to see how are Snapchat pictures saved on the phone:
- Screenshots: If somebody sends you a snap, it can be saved by taking a screenshot. However, the other person will be notified that you have taken a screenshot.
- Stories: If you have uploaded a photo to your Snapchat story, it will remain visible for only 24 hours. But, if you submit it to a “Local Stor” or “Live Story,” you will permit Snapchat to save it so that you can view it again.
- Memories: If you save pictures in the “Memories” section , they will never disappear and can be accessed anytime.

Investors Love It As Much As Teenagers Do
Snapchat hasn’t made any money yet: it doesn’t sell ads, charge people to download and/or use its app, or sell extras as in-app purchases. But money has been flowing into the company from another source: venture capital firms.
Snapchat raised $485k of seed funding from VC firm Lightspeed Venture Partners in May 2012, after one of its partners discovered that the three most popular apps among his daughter’s high-school class were Angry Birds, Instagram and Snapchat. “Thats interesting company. Of those, the one wed never heard of was Snapchat,” Lightspeed’s Jeremy Liew told TechCrunch in May 2013.
That was followed by a $13.5m round of Series A funding in February 2013 led by another prestigious VC firm, Benchmark Capital, with its partner Mitch Lasky telling the New York Times that “I started hearing Snapchat in the same context as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. That got me curious”.
Just four months later, Snapchat raised an even bigger round, $80m, reportedly including $20m in a “secondary offering” that likely helped Spiegel and Murphy cash out some of their equity in the company. This round was led by another firm, Institutional Venture Partners, and by this point, Snapchat’s valuation was $800m.
Not everyone is so excited by the spiralling valuation of a company that has yet to prove it can make money. Witness Roy Murdock’s Am I Going Insane? Snapchat is Intrinsically Worthless blog post for an opposing point of view:

Snapchat Logo Design Elements
Snapchat emblem: Picaboo is the inspiration behind the Ghostface Chilian emblem. If you divide Picaboo into logical sections, youll have Pic a Boo, which means a photo of a ghost in Spanish.
Using a cartoon image, Snapchat logo designers originally included the idea of fading shots. While its important to note that the multimedia content isnt completely cleared from the app, its kept in memory, but you cant access it anymore. The ghost logo states: If you do not see something, it doesnt mean that its not there.
Snapchat logo Colors: A yellow square with round corners contains a white ghost image with a thick black outline. In the beginning, the logo had a gradient background with three-dimensional backlighting and shading. Then it turned bright and uniform. After checking out the logos of numerous competitors, the Snapchat logo designers settled on the Pantone Yellow U shade.
But the current version of the Snapchat logo utilizes a slightly different yellow shade. Its brighter, almost acidic. And in the previous logo, there was a small red patch .

Text Filters Drawing And Stickers On Snapchat
You dont have to post raw photos or videos with Snapchat, you can also jazz them up with text, filters, doodles and what Snapchat calls stickers. Tapping the T icon at the top of the screen once youve captured a snap brings up a white on black text box that allows for up to two lines of centre-justified text, tapping it again turns it into larger, bold, left-justified text that you can scale, orient, reformat and even change colour. Tapping the text icon a third time changes that text from left to centre justified.
Not unlike Instagram, you can also dress your snaps with different filters. You can add different colour overlays to photos, including a black and white filter, whilst video snaps can be dressed with motion filters letting you slow down or speed up footage.
There is a third type of filter known as a geofilter, which only becomes available when your snap is taken at a specific location. As Recombu is based in London there are a number of geofilters with elements of the city woven into them, but geofilters can be found all over the place, even for specific events. Geofilters automatically appear alongside the conventional filters that you swipe through after youve captured your snap.
Sometimes you may want to highlight an element in your snap, write in a particular fashion or just add a doodle for fun thats where the pen tool comes in. Similarly to editing text, you can pick a colour and then draw over your snap .

Snapchat Has Fended Off Facebook Already
If teens are using Snapchat more and Facebook less, you’ll understand why the social network might want to buy or kill it. And it’s already tried to do both. The Wall Street Journal claimed in October that Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg “tried to approach the startup to discuss an acquisition above $1bn” but was “rebuffed by Spiegel”.
Then, this week, the same newspaper claimed that Zuckerberg had returned with an even higher all-cash offer of $3bn, but had again been turned down, with the WSJ’s sources suggesting Spiegel expects to field higher offers early in 2014.
Kill it? That would be the , which launched in December 2012 as an unashamed clone of Snapchat: a way to send messages, photos and videos and decide how long friends could see them for. Spiegel was unimpressed at the time, releasing a statement that self-consciously mirrored Apple’s famous welcome of IBM to the personal computer market in 1981.
Poke hasn’t been a big success: on iPhone, for example, Snapchat is still the sixth most popular free app in the US app store, but Facebook Poke isn’t even in the top 200. The competition may be switching to the Facebook Messenger app though, which has improved its photo-sharing features over time.
What Are Snapchat Stories
Earlier we mentioned stories, which let users review public snaps for up to 24 hours. When capturing a snap, instead of/as well as sending them to specific users privately, you can submit them to the My Story feed. Here, your Snapchat friends can view all of the snaps youve submitted to your story in a continuous stream. Theres no limit on how many times users can rewatch your story either .
As well as stories for individual users, there are also collaborative stories called Live Stories. Similarly to geofilters, users can only submit snaps to these stories when theyre in the right location at the right time. As an example, London has a story that any Snapchat users in the area can post to , live stories like these also appear for specific events.
