Grow Your Email Marketing List

Three Tips to Make the Most of the LinkedIn Desktop Redesign

“I highly recommend everyone on LinkedIn write a crafted letter , saying thank you for being connected on LinkedIn, and that you invite them to be part of your email marketing list. Do apologize for the lack of personalization in the email. LinkedIn lets you message 50 people at a time this way. I added about 300 people to my email list with this method. Include in your email a direct link for the email signup. It is imperative that you have reciprocity in the message: Tell them what they will receive by signing up for the email list, and offer to look at something of theirs, which is a fairly noncommittal method to garner goodwill.” Bradford Hines, founder of YumDomains and HungryKids.org

Reason #: It Looks More Professional

    Do Follow Links From LinkedIn

Piggybacking on the last paragraph there, perception is reality. Check out the image below, which car do you think is worth more? A or B?

If you said A, you’re wrong because it’s a trick question!

They’re the exact same car a 2015 Mercedes Benz C-Class. The only difference is the production quality and the staging of the images.

The reason most people choose A is because the perceived value is higher due to the quality of the image.

Now this is a bit of an extreme example to compare to your LinkedIn URL, but the principle absolutely holds true.

If you’re hiring someone you hope to pay attention to the details, would you want /austin-belcak-923032/ or /in/austinbelcak/?

Importance Of A Linkedin Marketing Strategy

Because the network consists of a totally different audience, LinkedIn marketing requires a different approach to get the results you want.

According to Sprout Social, on average than those engaged in Facebook marketing alone. Surveyed B2B marketers also said that LinkedIn is responsible for 80% of their social media leads. Used appropriately, LinkedIn is an effective marketing tool that can take your business to the next level.

    Claim Your Custom Url

“Everyone should claim their custom URL to ensure it includes their name. This is especially important for people who have a lot of contact with potential clients especially for those who professional services and the B2B sector because when meeting with someone they have not yet met, many people will search Google for the name of the person with whom they’re meeting to learn more about them. Claiming your custom URL makes it more likely your LinkedIn profile will rank at the top of those search results.” David Erickson, principal at e-Strategy Media

Choosing Your Custom Url Profile Name

You have a few options in creating your custom URL. One is to use your given name, such as Joe Smith. The other option is to use your business name. Finally, you can use a combination of the two, such as Joe Smith Freelance Writer. Some things to consider when deciding what to use include:

    • What are you branding? Do you want you or your business name to be the focus of your endeavor? How do you want to be known in the professional world?
    • How easy is it to use? While combining your name and business allows you to use both, it also creates a long URL that can be difficult to use if people have to type it in .
    • Will your name change? Traditionally, this is more of a problem for single women who get married and decide to take their husband’s name. However, I’ve seen many couples hyphenate both their names, in which case, it impacts men, as well. In this case, using your business name might be better.

You are allowed to change your LinkedIn customer URL up to five times in a 180-day period however, this is not advised. First, changing your URL means you have to update it everywhere you used the old URL. Further, people with the old URL will have difficulty finding you. Finally, after 180 days, someone else can use your old URL, which could potentially lead your clients and customers to the other person instead of you. For this reason, pick a name you know you can live with for a long time.
