Ive received hundreds of cold messages from job seekers and Ive tested a variety of outbound messages myself to see what works and what gets ignored. These are the best messages to send.

Can You Use Linkedin Teammates To Spy On Your Employees

Well, not so much spy exactly.

You can certainly keep an eye on them but, in order to preserve peoples privacy, when you add someone as a Teammate, they get a notification that you want to share the Teammates feature with them. They will have to verify they are a co-worker of yours before you can start seeing their updates.

How Do I Connect To And Set Up A Teammate

First ensure that the person is listed as an employee of the same company as you on LinkedIn

You also need to be connected with any prospective Teammates via your personal profiles

Head to my network from your home page

Go to Teammates in the menu on the left and click on it

The 3 categories will appear:

Click + on the relevant category

Start typing a name to add them

When one of your team members gets the notification, they just verify you are indeed co-workers and thats it!

If you get to a point where you have too many teammates to add any more, you may want to review them all to make sure youre benefitting from the feature with all your listed members. If not, then you can easily switch them out for someone new.

Linkedin Content Marketing Statistics And Info

1. There are currently over 50 million companies making it a great source for generating leads.

We covered this briefly above. However, instead of sending your employee email notifications for each new blog post send them a weekly digest of your most important content.

The benefit of an email digest is that it allows them to review it at their leisure, pick what’s relevant to their audience, and then share.

Your email service provider, marketing automation and Intranet will allow you to create an email newsletter as well.

Here are a few things to consider when sending an email digest internally:

  • Segmentation: Ideally, you want to separate the content by industry or role. For example, different sections for Sales, Engineering, and Marketing teams. Your employees will only share what’s relevant to their roles and their audience.
  • : Social media integrations within the newsletter should make it easier for them to share on LinkedIn and other networks.
  • Mobile-friendly: Studies have shown that the best times for LinkedIn engagement are 7 am to 8 am. It’s a time when most of your employees are on their daily commute. So your email digest should be easy to consume on mobile.

Why Is It Necessary To Have Direct Report

Distributing tasks properly and guiding the employees can be easily managed through direct reports. It cannot only complete all the tasks in a series but also help the employees improve their efficiency during work.

Furthermore, direct reports significantly impact large companies and big organizations where they have to manage numerous tasks regularly with equal efficiency and excellent results.

What Does Cold Message Mean

A cold message is a message sent to someone who doesnt know you and isnt expecting to receive communication from you. This type of outreach can be sent through a variety of channels such as email, LinkedIn, Facebook and more. Because cold outreach involves contacting someone who has never spoken with you, its relatively difficult to get responses and requires a certain type of strategy to succeed.

Direct reports are employees who, as the term implies, report directly to someone who is above them in the organizational hierarchy, often a manager, supervisor, or team leader. Another term for direct reports is subordinates. The person in charge of direct reports is responsible for assigning them work and monitoring performance.

Direct reports may themselves have direct reports. For example, a sales manager may report directly to a director of sales and also be in charge of a team of sales representatives.

Theoretical rules for organisational design are fine, until they meet with reality. Businesses are made up of people. Theres politics, skillsets, and different geographies to consider. The chances are that your org structure wont perfectly match the 4-6 or 10-15 targets.

Whilst middle-management has become rather unloved in the last decade or so, developing people is a key part of building high-performing teams that lead to business success. Its arguably easier, and certainly cheaper, to develop the people you have than to hire new people. However that coaching and support takes time and effort. If a manager has too many reports that development is typically the element that gets neglected.

If you have a manager who coordinates their staff and they have 7 or 8 reports its not the end of the world. It just means it will be harder to coordinate. If they have more than that, start looking at whether another layer of hierarchy would help. The same goes for capability managers if they have 20 reports they might have to prioritise which employees get more coaching and support than others. If they have more than 20, again start looking at whether the group can be split.

What Is The Optimal Number Of Direct Reports

When working on organisation design, is there a target number of direct reports per manager that you should aim for? Does it matter if one manager has 2 reports and another has 20? What is the optimal span of control?

Like any question of this nature the answer in your case will entirely depend on your company, context and the work. However there are some general principles we can explore.

The term command-and-control comes from the military. Its impractical for a military commander commander to talk to and control every soldier in their platoon and so they have in place a hierarchy where the platoon commander passes commands to the squad leaders who in turn pass them on to the fire-team leaders.

To ensure the message isnt lost in translation the commands are clear and concise. Everyone is clear on the mission objectives before they start and individual teams are empowered through decentralized decision-making to make the best decisions in the moment that align with that mission.

This hierarchical structure not only works well, its essential to ensure chaos doesnt reign. A commander cant know exactly where every soldier is or control their every move. In fact, a leader can only realistically lead, manage and co-ordinate about four to six people which is why every layer of the hierarchy is that size right down to the fire-teams.

What Are Some Organizations That Don’t Use Direct Reports

Companies that don’t have direct reports are few and far between, but they do exist. Take, for example, a flat organization . According to Forbes, flat organizations are very different than traditional organizations.

“Unlike any other corporate structure that exists, flat companies are exactly that…flat,” writes Forbes contributor Jacob Morgan. “There are usually no job titles, seniority, managers or executives. Everyone is seen as equal. Flat organizations are also oftentimes called or referred to as self-managed organizations . The most famous example of this comes from Valve, the gaming company responsible for classics such as Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Portal and many others. At Valve, there are no job titles and nobody tells you what to work on. Instead all the employees at Valve can see what projects are being worked on and can join whichever project they want. If an employee wants to start their own project then they are responsible for securing funding and building their team.”

Likewise, holacratic organizations don’t really use direct reports in the traditional sense either. Rather, they may have to deal with multiple managers or none at all, as the structure is much more fluid. Morgan explains it well in his piece on Forbes.

Use The Linkedin Teammates Feature To Prioritize Content From Company Contacts In The Linkedin Feed

To encourage further internal collaboration within the company, encourage employees to use the Teammates feature, which is currently being piloted by LinkedIn. This feature will ensure employees see LinkedIn updates from their current team such as their manager, teammates reporting to their manager, other teammates, and direct reports.

Notifications include updates such as work anniversaries, birthdays, posts, shares, and comments. Teammates wont see any private actions such as direct messages, searches, or job posting views.

To use the LinkedIn Teammates feature, click the My Network icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage and click Teammates on the left.

Youll then be redirected to a list of current team members. Anyone you wish to add as a teammate must have your business listed on their LinkedIn profile.

Customize Your Message For Each Person

You should always add some customization to show the reader that youre not just copying and pasting the same message to many people.

Youll see this in all of the cold messaging examples/templates coming up. They all feature customization and personalization, because it helps you get more responses.

If you only spend a few seconds pasting a generic message to somebody, theyre not going to take their time to reply in most cases.

Guide And Support Employees In Posting Their Own Linkedin Profile Updates

While having employees share content from your LinkedIn page is great support, you may also wish to support your non-marketing colleagues in creating their own content for LinkedInposts that can be shared by teammates and other network connections.

Some employees will be able to dive right in, knowing what they want to post on their profiles, but others may need a few suggestions. Here are some examples I share in training:
