Why You Should Pay Attention To Your Blood Pressure
Hypertension can wreak havoc on the body before alarming symptoms appear. Thats why regular checkups are a must.
Sometimes, Dr. Lioudis asks patients to check their blood pressure at different times of the day. Its the only way to spot masked hypertension. People with this condition have normal blood pressure in the doctors office, but high blood pressure at home.
We cant do anything for hypertension unless we know it exists, he says. Thats why we advise everyone to have their pressures checked at least yearly. They should also talk with their family doctor about stress, heart or kidney disease, family history of high blood pressure and any other potential contributing factor. By working together, you can bring your blood pressure under control.

A Low Pulse Or Blood Pressure Always Indicates A Problem
False: Whats healthy for one person may indicate danger for another. For example, a fit person may have a resting heart rate in their 50s or, in some cases, even their 40s. It can actually be a sign of being in really good shape, Dr. Laffin says.
Low blood pressure can be a bit trickier, especially in older patients and those with heart disease. If youre in danger from low blood pressure, your body will tell you. Its really about how you feel, Dr. Laffin says. Are you feeling weak? The numbers on their own dont tell the story; its the numbers paired with the symptoms you may have.
Be Still My Heart: How A Heart Rhythm Specialist Can Help

When this happens, electrophysiologists first try and slow theheart rate using medicines, Dr. Taigen says. But these medicines, known asbeta-blockers or calcium channel blockers, can also drop the blood pressure,he notes. Quite often, theres not much room for blood pressure to go lower.
If your blood pressure is too low for medications, aprocedure called direct current cardioversion can get the rhythm back tonormal.
With this procedure, we put pads on the front and back of the chest and sedate the patient for a minute or two, Dr. Taigen explains. When they are asleep, we deliver a shock that stops the heart from beating irregularly, so the natural heartbeat resumes.Once the heart rhythm is back to normal, anelectrophysiologist determines if a more permanent treatment is needed. Thesecould include:
- Ablation: This procedure uses cold orheat energy to stop faulty electrical signals.
- Pacemaker: Doctors place a small deviceunder the skin to send electrical impulses that change the heart rhythm.
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillator :Like a pacemaker, the ICD works by detecting and stopping faulty heart rhythmswith electrical signals.
- Surgery: Surgeons create scar tissue withincisions to permanently interrupt faulty electrical pathways in the heart.

Examples Of Asymptomatic Illnesses
There are many long-term medical conditions and short-term illnesses that have no symptoms, says epidemiologist Aaron E. Glatt, MD, chair of medicine at Mount Sinai South Nassau.;
In fact, millions of people around the world have what are called silent, or latent, infections, Glatt says. They are called this because some bacteria and viruses transmit infections for which there may be no symptoms at all.
“People can go through their whole lives having an asymptomatic illness such as tuberculosis, which we call latent tuberculosis,” Glatt says.
Moreover, a study published in The Lancet in 2014 found that 77% of flu infections didn’t have any symptoms. The lack of symptoms may be due to having preexisting immunity to the infection.;
Some chronic illnesses also have no symptoms, such as high blood pressure , which affects more than 30% of adults in the US. In fact, it is often called the “silent killer” because it can develop over time and damage your body without you even knowing it.;
The following common diseases can occur without any symptoms:;
- Hypertension
- Respiratory diseases, like the flu or COVID-19

How Is Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosed
Because pulmonary hypertension may be caused by many medical conditions, a complete medical history, physical exam, and description of your symptoms are necessary to rule out other diseases and make the correct diagnosis. During the physical exam, your healthcare provider will:
- Listen for abnormal heart sounds, such as a loud pulmonic valve sound, a systolic murmur of tricuspid regurgitation, or a gallop due to ventricular failure.
- Examine the jugular vein in the neck for engorgement .
- Examine the abdomen, legs, and ankles for fluid retention.
- Examine nail beds for bluish tint.
- Look for signs of other underlying diseases that might be causing pulmonary hypertension.
Other tests that might be ordered include:
- Blood tests:
- Complete blood count : Tests for infection, elevated hemoglobin, and anemia.
- B-type natriuretic peptide : A marker for heart failure.
Whos At Risk For Labile Hypertension
Labile hypertension tends to be situational. This means the spikes occur in response to stressful events a fender bender, intensive physical exertion or thinking about financial woes, for example. This helps distinguish labile hypertension from true hypertension, in which blood pressure is high all the time.
Although hypertension can develop at any time, it raises a red flag when it occurs in young people or after age 60.
People who develop hypertension in their 40s particularly if they have a family history of hypertension are more likely to have essential hypertension than labile hypertension. They tend to be overweight or have underlying dietary issues, such as excessive sodium intake or heavy alcohol consumption.

High Blood Pressure Is More Dangerous Than Ahigh Heart Rate
True: Again, whats considered normal varies. But Dr. Laffin says there is enough clinical evidence to suggest that when blood pressure is even a little over your typical average over time, the risk for heart disease and stroke go up. The physical effects of high blood pressure take their toll on your blood vessels.
Essentially, for each increment of 20 mmHg over 115 mmHg systolic, your risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure or chronic kidney disease doubles, Dr. Laffin says.
Elevated heart rate can be a sign of danger, too, but the cause-effect relationship is not so clear. Studies show that people who have faster baseline heart rates are more likely to have cardiac problems and premature cardiac death, Dr. Laffin says. But were not sure whether that is the cause of the problem or just a sign of whats going on. The most common cause of a high resting heart rate is being deconditioned .
How Is Pulmonary Hypertension Treated
Appropriate diagnosis and analysis of the problem is necessary before starting any treatment. Treatment varies by patient, based on the different underlying causes, but generally includes:
- Taking medications
Listed below are medication, lifestyle and dietary suggestions, and surgical treatment approaches.
Medications
Many different types of medications are available to treat pulmonary hypertension. Treatment choices, such as those listed below, depend on the underlying cause of pulmonary hypertension, how severe the pulmonary hypertension is, how likely it is to progress, and a patientâs drug tolerance.
Medication guidelines
- Know the names of your medications and how they work. Keep a list with you.
- Take your medications at the same time every day. If you forget a dose, do not take two doses to make up for the dose you missed.
- Do not take any over-the-counter drugs unless you ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Some drugs such as decongestants and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents can cause problems in people who have heart failure. Also avoid any over-the-counter medications whose labels state that caution is to be used if you have high blood pressure.
- Do not stop taking or change your medications unless you first talk with your doctor.
- Avoid herbal products because of their uncertain effects when combined with medications used for pulmonary hypertension.

How To Use Status
If you have it available, you can access the feature by opening up Snap Maps, and hitting the Status button in the bottom left corner. From there, you can select a from a list of places around you, or type in a custom place.
You’ll be presented with a list of Bitmoji, with activities that correspond to that location .
Once you’ve selected your location, the Bitmoji showing the activity will show up on the map, and a tooltip will tell people where exactly you are.
Your Status will last until you leave the location, and you can also delete it. The location will be added to a private list called Passport, and you can delete locations as you wish.
As with Snap Maps before, you can choose to share your location with your friends, some friends, or activate Ghost Mode — which means no one can see where you are.
Mashable has reached out to Snapchat for further information.
The new feature comes off the back of Snap turning around its decline in users last year, and looking to a redesign for the Android app. It’s also teased a gaming service, which is set to be announced on Thursday.

Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension do not usually occur until the condition has progressed. The first symptom of pulmonary hypertension is usually shortness of breath with everyday activities, such as climbing stairs. Fatigue, dizziness, and fainting spells also can be symptoms. Swelling in the ankles, abdomen or legs, bluish lips and skin, and chest pain may occur as strain on the heart increases. Symptoms range in severity and a given patient may not have all of the symptoms.
In more advanced stages of the disease, even minimal activity will produce some of the symptoms. Additional symptoms include:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Racing pulse
Eventually, it may become difficult to carry out any activities as the disease worsens.

Getting Blood Pressure Under Control
Many missed opportunities to prevent heart disease and stroke
Nearly 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure.
About 36 million adults with high blood pressure dont have it under control.
1,000
High blood pressure contributes to nearly 1,000 deaths a day.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, both of which are leading causes of death in the US. Nearly one-third of all American adults have high blood pressure and more than half of them dont have it under control.* Many with uncontrolled high blood pressure dont know they have it. Millions are taking blood pressure medicines, but their blood pressure is still not under control. There are many missed opportunities for people with high blood pressure to gain control. Doctors, nurses and others in health care systems should identify and treat high blood pressure at every visit.
*Blood pressure control means having a systolic blood pressure less than 140 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg, among people with high blood pressure.
Controlling blood pressure has to be a priority.
Why is blood pressure control so important to health?
When your blood pressure is high:
- You are 4 times more likely to die from a stroke
- You are 3 times more likely to die from heart disease
Even blood pressure that is slightly high can put you at greater risk.
