Keep The Main Sections Shorter Than Your Resume
When it comes to things like your work experience and bullets, your LinkedIn profile should be shorter than your resume. Assume people are reading it for just a few seconds per job listing.
So pick your top 3-4 bullets from your resume per job, and put those. But cut the rest out.
Also consider including a one-sentence description of your work in each role too, just above the bullets. This is typically a bit longer on a resume, but if its already just one sentence on your resume, you can copy it over. If not, Id shorten it a bit.
The only exception to this rule: The summary that appears below your name but above your work history on LinkedIn. Id recommend that be 2-3 sentences on your resume, and around the same length on LinkedIn too.
So thats something you CAN copy over. If youre not sure how to write a resume summary thatll stand out and impress employers, you can learn how here.
Linkedin Should Be More Informal
Recruiters and HR managers will go to your LinkedIn profile to learn more about you as a person. This is generally evident in your writing style, so be sure to make it more informal to give it some voice. There are big differences between resumes that get you hired and your LinkedIn profile, and its important to distinguish the two.
Also, dont mistake an informal voice for being unprofessional. There are creative ways to make your LinkedIn profile professional and informal. If you struggle with that aspect,;executive resume services;can help.

Should You Put Your Linkedin On Your Resume
You should definitely add your LinkedIn URL to your resume because social media governs a lot of our current interactions and LinkedIn is the social media site for professionals.
LinkedIn offers more information about you and can even give future employers several mini recommendations about you via endorsements from others connected to you in LinkedIn.
You can also upload samples of your work on your LinkedIn profile that can help set you apart from the competition. For example, links to articles, presentations, pictures, etc.
Diversifying your LinkedIn profile helps you look like a more well-rounded candidate with provable skills.
These details can help set you apart from the competition and give you an edge. It helps you get around the one-page resume rule: you can tailor your resume to the job application, but also have all the other great reasons why you would be a great employee on your LinkedIn profile.
Additionally, it gives future interviewers more to work with when theyre interviewing you. If they see youve shared content from a thought-leader in your industry that they also know, it may lead to some more impactful interview questions. Rapport with your interviewer is never a bad thing.
So adding your LinkedIn URL to your resume is definitely a great idea for most job applicants. However, if you are applying for a federal job, make sure you are following the rules for what to include on application materials before sending a resume in with your LinkedIn URL.

Mandatory Profile And Cover Photo
If you didnt already know, you should not include a photo on your resume. Its not only a waste of space with the potential to mess with Applicant Tracking Systems, but it can be a discrimination trigger in the initial review of your resume. You have precious little space on your resume, so you should use it to focus on your accomplishments.
However, as emphatically as we tell you not to have one on your resume, well also tell you that you need to have a photo on your LinkedIn profile two of them, in fact.
A profile picture automatically increases your credibility on LinkedIn. Your profile is seen as incomplete and even unprofessional if you dont include a photo. This isnt just a hunch, either: profiles with pictures have 21 times more profile views and 9 times more connection requests.
Make sure the photo you include meets professional standards, too. You dont need to hire a professional, but it should be a clean, well-lit headshot of you with a professional demeanor. So no, it shouldnt be a blurry photo of you out clubbing.;
But wait, theres more. You know that blue space at the top of your profile above your headline? Thats supposed to be a photo!
Your cover photo is an easy opportunity to get that human factor we talked about and show a little personality with your profile. Choose a photo that showcases your interests, family, hometown, your passion for your field, or even your hobby, like mine below:

It’s An Essential Step Toward Inclusivity
Whether you’re cisgender, transgender, or non-binary, listing your pronouns on professional materials is an important step toward workplace inclusivity. Max Masure, the co-founder of Argo Collective, an organization that helps workplaces build inclusive cultures, says including pronouns in your professional materials is a great way to show someone you’re an LGBTQ+ ally.
Normalizing the usage of pronouns is a concrete, impactful way to show your advocacy for LGBTQIA+ individuals, they write in a Medium article. However you identify, be proud of your pronouns and encourage others to as well! It helps more people than you think.
