Why Elon Musk can sue the britches off Twitter

Jack Dorsey, one of Twitters co-founders, was the first person to post anything to Twitter. The tweet, which said just setting up my twttr, was first published on March 21, 2006. Dorsey posted the first tweet at 9:50 pm. Last year, Twitter founder Jack Dorseys first ever tweet was sold for the equivalent of $2.9m to a Malaysia-based businessman. It was sold as a nonfungible token . Dorsey said he would convert the proceeds to bitcoin and then donate them to the Give Directlys Africa Response fund.

However Dorsey Says He Doesn’t Care About Looking Bad

In a bizarre Huffington Post interview in 2019, Dorsey was asked whether Donald Trump â an avid tweeter â could be removed from the platform if he called on his followers to murder a journalist. Dorsey gave a vague answer which drew sharp criticism.

Following the interview’s publication, Dorsey said he doesn’t care about “looking bad.”

“I care about being open about how we’re thinking and about what we see,” he added.

“It was a weird state to be in. But as I did it the next two times, it just became so apparent to me how much of our days are centered around meals and how â the experience I had was when I was fasting for much longer, how time really slowed down,” he said.

The comments drew fierce criticism from many who said Dorsey was normalizing eating disorders.

In a later interview with Wired, Dorsey said he eats seven meals a week, “just dinner.”

“Block references the neighborhood blocks where we find our sellers, a blockchain, block parties full of music, obstacles to overcome, a section of code, building blocks, and of course, tungsten cubes,” it added.

Malicious And Fake Accounts

Between January and late July 2017, Twitter had identified and shut down over 7,000 fake accounts created by Iranian influence operations.

In May 2018, in response to scrutiny over the misuse of Twitter by those seeking to maliciously influence elections, Twitter announced that it would partner with the nonprofit organization Ballotpedia to add special labels verifying the authenticity of political candidates running for election in the U.S.

In December 2019, Twitter removed 5,929 accounts for violating their manipulation policies. The company investigated and attributed these accounts to a single state-run information operation, which originated in Saudi Arabia. The accounts were reported to be a part of a larger group of 88,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior. However, Twitter did not disclose all of them as some could possibly be legitimate accounts taken over through hacking.

As of 2022, the top three countries spreading state-linked Twitter misinformation are Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Twitter Did Not Invent The Hashtag

Twitter never invented the hashtag but it was Chris Messina who invented it. Jack Dorseys Twitter was launched in July 2006 while the hashtag was used in August 2007 by Twitter user Chris Messina. Messina originally proposed using the hash or pound symbol before the keyword to make tweets easier to search. Twitter was a new platform back then and Massina wanted to make tweets more searchable.

A product designer by profession, Messina got the idea of using a hashtag from Internet chat rooms. He decided to pitch the idea to Twitter, but the company told him it was nerdy and that it would never catch on. I was a little bit dejected but I laughed, he told CNBC in an interview. I thought, I just dont know how else were gonna solve this problem. Two months later, Chris urged users to tweet about the San Diego wildfire using hashtags, which prompted Twitter to update its algorithm that made hashtags clickable. And the rest is history. Hashtags are used by millions on social media platforms to raise their voice.

Present: Proposed Acquisition By Elon Musk

Business magnate Elon Musk revealed that he had bought 9.1% of Twitter for $2.64 billion on April 4, 2022. In response, Twitter’s stock rose by as much as 27% and Twitter shares experienced the largest intraday surge since Twitter’s IPO in 2013. Musk was offered a seat on Twitter’s board of directors as part of a deal that prohibited him from acquiring more than 14.9% of the company, but Musk decided not to join the board before his appointment became effective on April 9.

Musk then made an unsolicited offer on April 14 to acquire Twitter for $43 billion and take the company private, saying that he believed in the importance of free speech for democracy around the world. In a TED interview, Musk showed little interest in fighting internet censorship around the world, saying that “Twitter should match the laws of the country”. Instead, Musk’s concern about free speech has been directed almost entirely at Twitter’s moderation policies. Twitter’s board introduced a “poison pill” strategy on April 15, which would allow shareholders to buy additional stock should a hostile takeover occur as a means to block Musk’s takeover. On April 20, Musk secured $46.5 billion as a tender offer to buy Twitter. On April 25, it was reported that Twitter was prepared to accept Musk’s offer, with the board publicly accepting the offer later that day.

Suspect And Contested Accounts

In January 2016, Twitter was sued by the widow of a U.S. man killed in the 2015 Amman shooting attack, claiming that allowing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to continually use the platform, including direct messages in particular, constituted the provision of material support to a terrorist organization, which is illegal under U.S. federal law. Twitter disputed the claim, stating that “violent threats and the promotion of terrorism deserve no place on Twitter and, like other social networks, our rules make that clear.” The lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, upholding the Section 230 safe harbor, which dictates that the operators of an interactive computer service are not liable for the content published by its users. The lawsuit was revised in August 2016, providing comparisons to other telecommunications devices.

On May 10, 2019, Twitter announced that they suspended 166,513 accounts for promoting terrorism in the JulyDecember 2018 period, stating there was a steady decrease in terrorist groups trying to use the platform owing to its “zero-tolerance policy enforcement”. According to Vijaya Gadde, Legal, Policy and Trust and Safety Lead at Twitter, there was a reduction of 19% terror related tweets from the previous reporting period .

Dorsey Managed To Strike A Truce With Elliott Management

The deal included a $1 billion investment from private equity firm Silver Lake, and partners from both Elliott Management and Silver Lake joined Twitter’s board.

Patrick Pichette, lead independent director of Twitter’s board, said he was “confident we are on the right path with Jack’s leadership,” but added that a new temporary committee would be formed to instruct the board’s evaluation of Twitter’s leadership.

Api And Developer Platform

Gutfeld: Liberal groups call for Twitter boycott

Twitter is recognized for having one of the most open and powerful developer APIs of any major technology company. The service’s API allows other web services and applications to integrate with Twitter. Developer interest in Twitter began immediately following its launch, prompting the company to release the first version of its public API in September 2006. The API quickly became iconic as a reference implementation for public REST APIs and is widely cited in programming tutorials.

From 2006 until 2010, Twitter’s developer platform experienced strong growth and a highly favorable reputation. Developers built upon the public API to create the first Twitter mobile phone clients as well as the first URL shortener. Between 2010 and 2012, however, Twitter made a number of decisions that were received unfavorably by the developer community. In 2010, Twitter mandated that all developers adopt OAuth authentication with just 9 weeks of notice. Later that year, Twitter launched its own URL shortener, in direct competition with some of its most well-known third-party developers. And in 2012, Twitter introduced stricter usage limits for its API, “completely crippling” some developers. While these moves successfully increased the stability and security of the service, they were broadly perceived as hostile to developers, causing them to lose trust in the platform.

What Does Elon Musk Plan To Do With Twitter

He said: Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.

He continued: Twitter has tremendous potential. I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.

Twitter Was Almost Called Twitch

Twitter was nearly called Twitch. We all looked at the Oxford English dictionary at the T-Ws, and we found the word Twitter, says co-founder Jack Dorsey in the WNYC interview. And Twitter means a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds. And we were like, that describes exactly what were doing here. Once the name was finalised, the founding team wasnt sure about using Twitter because in certain cultures it could be demeaning, Dorsey explains. For example, Twit is not necessarily associated with the best things. It took two months or so for the team to get used to the name. Twitter paid a minuscule amount for Twitter.com, Dorsey says. Incidentally, Dorsey has given Elon Musk his full approval post the acquisition announcement.
