Finally You Can Apply For Verification Again
ByJim Martin, Editor| 02 Jun 2021
Back in 2009, Twitter created a verification process so you could apply to get a blue check mark next to your name. The symbol showed the account was either genuine, so you didn’t accidentally follow someone pretending to be Elon Musk, Katy Perry or another celebrity or brand. But it also marked out notable accounts, and a few years ago anyone could apply to prove they are who they claim to be.
Unfortunately the verification gates were shut on 26 February 2018 and users have been waiting ever since for a chance to get their account verified. Now, Twitter has announced they’re opening again and you’ll see the option appear in the app over the next few weeks.
You may have seen that Twitter since paused verification applications – fortunately the company has resumed taking requests, so if you weren’t able to apply before then give it another go now.
Here we explain how to get your Twitter account verified once the option returns to the app.
Why Its Important To Be Twitter Verified
There are likely to be a lot of obvious benefits to having a verified status on Twitter.
There are some immediate platform benefits, too. You can opt out of group DMs, and you can filter your notifications to include only notifications from other verified users.
Its this last point that might be the most important.
And to look ahead into the future, this may be an area that Twitter moves toward for everyone. The Verified filter is only available to other verified users now, but its possible that this could be rolled out to all Twitter users in some form, perhaps even as a filter in the main Twitter stream.
Being verified ensures that your content and your interactions always remain visible for the maximum number of Twitter users possible.
If a significant share of Twitter users were verified, it would be easier for Twitter to make something like Show notifications and replies only from verified users and people I follow the Twitter default view.
Its a bit early to tell for sure where Twitter may head, though it never helps to get ahead of the curve if you can. Just in case.
Dont Do Anything That Violates Twitter Rules
Not sure about ? Unsure if something youre planning might violate them? Just take a quick read of the rulebook to be sure. Doing anything that violates the rules will result in your account being unverified and even suspended.
Make sure youre using your account in a way that builds a credible, engaging and real Twitter presence for your brand. That will pay off down the road.

How do I get a blue tick on Twitter?
Be Exact With The Location In Your Bio
Ive seen a lot of clever, original ways that people have used their location field in the Twitter bio. At Buffer, since were a fully remote team, we list our location as Worldwide.
Other people have chosen a humorous path. My all-time favorite is Location: Spaceship earth. ? ?
Its very possible that the location field doesnt matter much. I didnt want to take any chances.
My location was listed as Idaho, which I always thought was specific enough since not too many people know specific cities within my sparsely populated state. However, just to play it safe, I went ahead and added the city: Boise, Idaho.

The New Process On Twitter Verification
The new process includes filling out an application directly from your profile.
You can do it from your phone using the mobile app or from a desktop.

After that, it is in Twitters hands to make a decision on whether or not to verify you.
For People Profiles Add A Cover Photo That Shows You Doing Something Important
For a long time, I had used an inspiring quote as my cover photo. It looked pretty nice, I thought . But it wasnt quite as powerful or descriptive of a person of public interest.
Fortunately, I had the chance to speak at Unbounces CTA Conference a few months before, so I added a picture from when I was speaking on stage. John Bonini of Litmus does it really well here, too:

Do You Need To Submit An Id Like Instagram Asks For
The short answer is no. While verification of your identity might be needed, outside of Government issued IDs, Twitter says you can also use an official website with direct references to your Twitter account or an official email address with a domain relevant to the category you choose.
For corporate and brand accounts, this makes the Verification process easier. After all, if an ID is required for these accounts then itll have to be the ID of an authorized representative. Which means that Twitter will have to determine if someone is authorized. This can get complicated rather quickly.

Why Get Verified On Twitter
So as of May 2021, Twitter has started rolling out verification applications to everyone.
And if you clicked on this post, were guessing you already know what the verification badge is, but just in case, lets define it really quickly.
The blue verified badge on Twitter lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic.
To receive the blue badge, your account must be authentic, notable, and active.
To encourage and maintain trust between users on the platform, you will need to confirm your identity with Twitter in order to be verified.
You will usually see these badges on verified celebrity accounts, for example, so that we know its the REAL Kevin Hart tweeting
and not just somebody pretending to be Kevin Hart.
But businesses can have verified badges too!
Note that one of the main benefits of social media verified accounts is that it helps customers know which account is really you or your business.
But now the question is what should you do to get Twitter verification?

More Tips To Get Verified
As Twitters verification application process is no longer available, getting verified is now reliant on Twitter and other users acknowledging your account as worthy of public interest.
1. Get Active
Want to build an audience, increase engagement, and improve your odds of being verified? Post more.
Inactive accounts are not the mark of public interest, nor do they effectively gain followers. By consistently publishing high quality content, youll signal your accounts value to current followers, new audiences, and Twitter itself.
2. Get Specific
Verify your expertise and value by including specifics in your bio. Showcase key accomplishments and use specific numbers or KPIs when possible. It may feel self-promotional, but it helps to verify and visualize your credibility.
3. Tag Verified Accounts
Including an employer or partner-organizations handle in your bio section will also add credibility and connect you with another verified account. It will help users quickly verify your profession or common Twitter connections.
Relevant hashtags are another tool to showcase your connection to a specific topic or audience. Consider including those you regularly engage with, or have authority in, to your bio.
4. Showcase Accomplishments
Each of these tips are valuable to building a respected, effective Twitter profile. And while theres no guarantee or timeline for Twitter verification, following these steps will best position your profile to earn the blue badge.
