How Do You Know If Your Direct Message Has Been Received
Twitter has a great little feature called Read receipts that works the same way as it does in Facebook messenger or iMessage. This feature allows you to see when the person youve sent a DM to has read your message.
Just go to your Twitter Messages Inbox and tap once on the message bubble in the conversation. The word “Seen” will appear just below and to the left of the checkmark , if the recipient has indeed seen the message.
Be Ready To Move Customer Conversations Beyond Your Dms
DMs are definitely not the be-all, end-all of providing customer service on Twitter.
Maybe text-only communication isnt cutting it for someones issue. If so, dont be afraid to suggest moving elsewhere to get the issue sorted. For example, you might link out to your help desk or personal email.
That said, you might have a select few customers that are adamant about not leaving the DMs. If thats the case, try to sort the issues out there.
What Happens When My Tweets Are Protected But Still Show In Search Engine Results
- After you protect your Tweets, only you and your followers can read your updates or see your Tweets in Twitter search.
- If you at one time had public Tweets , those Tweets will no longer be public or appear in public Twitter search results, unless someone had the Tweet added to their Home timeline before your account became private.* However, unprotecting your Tweets will cause any previously protected Tweets to be made public.
- Find out how to remove your updates from Google search. Twitter does not have the ability to remove content on websites other than twitter.com.
Include Photos Gifs And Videos
When Twitter provides you the option to include photos, videos, and GIFs in your DM, why not use it to the best of your advantage. Sharing a helpful photo, video, or GIF can make it very easy for your customers to understand how to resolve a problem.
The best accounts on Twitter create engaging visual content to educate and help their customers through Tweets. Once created, this type of content can be repurposed for Twitter direct messages too.

Develop Relationships With New Followers
Welcoming new followers to your community is a nice touch, whether you send a Tweet or a Direct Message. Consider using Direct Messages to start a conversation with new members of your audience. For example, you can open with a question about what brought them to your brand or offer to help. You can even provide a discount code to thank them for their interest in your product or service.
Some brands opt to pursue new follower outreach with automated Direct Messages. But we encourage you to think about all the possible ramifications before adopting automatic social media messaging platforms for your business. An impersonal and clearly automated message comes across as spam. Automated DMs can quickly transform a new follower from an eager potential customer to someone who dismisses your brand and unfollows you outright.
When considering whether to automate any part of your brands social presence, ask yourself whether youre adding value for your audience. If the answer is no, automation probably isnt the best fit.

Can You Dm On Twitter
Twitter DMs are the messages sent on Twitter that remain private between you and the recipient. They do not appear on your feed as well.
You can initiate a private conversation with another Twitter user if you follow them . Similarly, you can receive a Twitter DM from any of your followers.
If you have opted in your settings to receive messages from anyone , then you can receive Twitter direct messages even from someone who doesn’t follow you.
Those who don’t follow you can still send you a Twitter DM if they have previously sent you a direct message. If you send DMs to accounts that do not follow you, you may need to verify your phone number.
Direct messages can be started as a group conversation as well. In that case, everyone in the group can see all messages, even if they don’t follow each other.
What Twitter Dm Settings Should You Know About
Below are some notable features of Twitter DMs that you can find in the Settings tab of your Inbox:
- Allow message requests from everyone. Kind of self-explanatory. This allows you to accept DMs from accounts whether they follow you or not. This also includes group DMs. Even if you have this enabled, expect to see DMs pop up in your Message Requests.
- Filter low-quality messages. Again, no surprises here. This feature helps reduce spam in your DMs.
- Show read receipts. Whether you want this enabled is purely a matter of personal preference. If you frequently speak with friends or colleagues via DMs, its a courtesy to have read receipts active.

The Beginner’s Guide To Direct Messages On Twitter
Direct messages are a private message sent directly to a specific user on Twitter, that nobody else is able to see unless they have access to that account. There are three key things that you need to know about direct messages:
- You can only send a direct message to someone that you follow and follows you in return, unless the Twitter user has opted to allow message requests for their profile.
- Direct messages can now go up to an incredible 10,000 characters! Go forth and write essays.
- You can send up to 1,000 direct messages a day – this shouldnt be a problem, unless youre particularly chatty.
So how can you use direct messages on Twitter? Not only are they a great way to privately connect with friends, but they can also help generate leads and drive traffic to your website by engaging with potential customers in a more discreet manner, rather than clogging up your Twitter feed with Tweets.
How to send a direct message
- A pop-up window will appear, showing you the history of all your direct messages, select New Message to start composing a message.
- In the Address box, type the name or the username of the person youd like to send a direct message to.
- If youd like to attach a photo to your message, click Add Photo. Remember, since direct messages are only visible to you and the message recipient, photos that you send through direct messages are also private.
- Type your message and click Send.
Manage Both Tweets And Dms Together As Single Conversations
It’s essential to treat both messages with equal priority and as part of one conversation with the customer. Try maintaining the continuity of conversation at a single channel, and don’t try to switch from public to private or vice versa quickly. This will only increase the confusion and delay the complaint from getting resolved fast.
As your business grows, it will be beneficial to use a purpose-built social customer care tool to help manage these conversations at scale.

How To Mass Dm Your Followers On Twitter
Mass direct messages on Twitter is a bit of a controversial subject. The practice has been on the rise ever since Twitter removed the character limit on direct messages in August of last year. This makes DMs more flexible and allows businesses to use them in a number of different ways.
The problem is, mass mailing has a suspicious resemblance to spam if youre not careful with the way youre doing it. If it were completely free-rein, Twitter inboxes would very quickly come to resemble spam email inboxes.
Fair warning: a lot of this article might get your hopes up before I cruelly dash them. Im not a fan of mass DMing, and with good reason its used for spam far, far more often than its ever used for anything legitimate. There are strict limits on DMing on Twitter, so youre going to be fighting a wall the whole way.

Twitter Rolls Out New Direct Message Overlay To All Desktop Users
After testing it out over the past few months, Twitter has now officially launched its new direct message chat window on desktop, which enables users to engage with their messages without having to leave their main tweet feed.
Slide into those DMs without clicking away from your timeline.Rolling out on web.
As you can see here, the addition provides a mini, picture-in-picture display for your DMs, which is similar to the desktop messaging functionality on both LinkedIn and Facebook. When you get a new DM, the window will expand, and you can collapse it any time – or engage in the DM discussion via the smaller screen.
As noted, Twitter has been testing the option over the last few months, with reverse engineering expert posting these screenshots back in April.

As with all platforms, Twitter is seeing increased usage of direct messaging as people reduce their public posting activity, and it’s rolled out a range of DM updates and feature additions over the past year to align with this shift.
As such, this new addition makes sense – though Twitter users will undoubtedly be upset to have their regular tweet experience interrupted by the new window popping-up when they get a message. If that sounds like you, you can also switch if off. Oh wait, no you can’t, you can only minimize it.
Thousands Rally For Abortion Across Australia
Last year, effectively pushed back its timetable for rolling out end-to-end encryption by default across its various social platforms, with an executive saying the privacy-enhancing change would not happen until sometime in 2023.
The delay came under a new spotlight this week after news broke that Facebook messages sent through Messenger and obtained by law enforcement had been used to charge a Nebraska teen and her mother with having an illegal abortion.
The case began before the Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade in June, and Meta said the search warrant it received did not mention abortion.

But to some digital privacy experts, it highlighted the risks people now face with their online data – especially in a post-Roe America – and the urgency for tech companies such as Facebook to enable end-to-end encryption by default.
End-to-end encryption refers to the practice of coding messages so that only the sender and recipient can see their contents, without the messaging platform having any access to them.
While a large subset of users may not actively consider the level and type of encryption their messages have, it is becoming increasingly important that they do – or, some experts say, that tech companies make a choice for them.
