The maximum allowed characters is 50, but they might not all show on your profile.
While its nice to have neat, tidy names that fit in the display area, its not required. Go with what best describes the board.
For example, Social Media Scheduling Tools & Tips doesnt all fit on the profile view of the board. But that tips keyword is still there for SEO purposes!
If someone should search Social Media Scheduling Tips this board would be more likely to surface due to that.

Take Inventory Of Current Boards
Just like organizing your closet, the first step is to declutter your existing Pinterest account. You probably have old stuff that youll likely never look at again, so lets get rid of those to make navigation a little easier.
- Archive Unneeded Boards. You may have old boards like First Birthday Party or Bathroom Remodel but those days have been long-gone for years. Pinterest has added an Archive feature for you to remove old boards from your main page without actually deleting them. This is way better than deleting because they wont take up space but can still be recovered if needed.
- Note any boards with very little pins. You can merge these boards with other boards if that make sense to do.
- Note your most-revisited boards. You can add these to a scrap sheet of paper.
Tip #: Categorizing By Volume

The first step towards organization is categorization. Whether you have 100 pins or 1000 pins, you need to ask yourself one simple question: “What are the topics covered by these pins?” Once you can answer that, start with the largest group and drill down.
Here’s an example. Let’s say you have 1000 pins: 600 pins related to cooking, 300 pins related to fashion, and 100 pins related to gardening. I would start with the cooking pins and divide them into more specific topics: 500 recipe pins and 100 “food porn” pins. Then I’d divide the recipe pins into baking recipes, fish recipes, beef recipes, etc.
When should you stop splitting groups into smaller groups? That’s up to you. My personal preference is to keep boards around 100 pins. Once a board reaches 150 pins, I’ll find a way to split it into two boards of 75 pins each.
Categorizing by volume is a good balance between letting boards grow but preventing them from growing too large. It ensures that you only create new boards when you absolutely need them.

Group boards should only be one part of your strategy, not all of it. If you are exclusively pinning your content to group boards I would strongly suggest you dial that back to 30/70 ratio . Not utilizing your personal boards and relying so heavily on group boards puts you at the mercy of a group board owner. A group board owner could remove you at any time or delete the board altogether.
Heres a quick guide for evaluating group boards:
- Does the topic still fit within your niche or do you write content that will fit on the board?
- Is there activity on the board or does it seem to be a dead space with little to no repins?
- How many contributors? Less is more. Having 5-10 contributors who are active is going to be vastly more productive than having your content buried in a board with 50, 75 or even 100s of contributors.
Group boards come and go all the time. Its okay to leave if the board is no longer helpful to your business. Consider joining up with just a few friends who have a similar niche.

And Pin it immediately after publishing! Here are some quick tips for pinnable images:
- At least 1 1/2 times as tall as wide.
- Bright, warm colors draw more attention.

For products, recipes, etc: Use one image, or create a simple collage of 2 to 4 images with a few words of text to explain.

Dont worry, its an easy fix. All you have to do is on your mobile device, got to Edit Profile. At the very bottom of your profile, you can choose how to sort your boards. Simply select Custom, and voila! Your layout stays just how you want it.

Tip #: Naming Your Boards
So you’ve looked over your pins and you’ve decided how you want to categorize them. Before you go ahead and create the actual boards, here’s a great tip for naming those boards in a way that will help you stay organized.
Always name your boards in this format: General – Specific. For example, let’s say you have three boards and you’re thinking of titling them as such:

A better way to name those boards would be:
- Event Ideas – Date Night
- Event Ideas – Holidays
- Event Ideas – Travel Spots
Why is this better? For one, it makes it easier for you to sort your boards in alphabetical order, which makes it easier to find the boards you want. It will also make it easier for others to find their way around your boards. But it’ll also come in handy in tip #5 when you need to move pins from board to board.
Tip #: Always Be Reorganizing

Let’s say you’ve been using boards for a while and they’ve gotten out of hand. Some boards are huge with hundreds or even thousands of pins. Other boards have never breached 25 pins. This is when reorganization comes in.
Like mentioned in tip #1, you should split boards when they’ve grown too big. But along the same lines, you should combine boards when they’re too small. If most of your boards have around 100 pins but two are hovering around 30 pins, go ahead and combine them under a common topic.
If you can’t find a way to combine boards, consider deleting them. If you have a handful of boards that are tiny, haven’t been growing, and can’t be combined with other boards, they’ll just clutter up your space. Of course, if you really need to save those pins for later and you don’t mind the clutter, feel free to keep them.

Tip #: Pin Once And Only Once
The whole point of categorizing your pins into boards is to make it easier for you to find your pins. If you pin multiple posts to multiple boards, it may be easier for you to find those pins but you’re also making it harder to find other pins due to the increased volume.
For best organization, make sure each post is pinned to one board. If a pin could fit into multiple boards, choose the one that best represents it. If you’re having a hard time choosing a board, that may be a sign that your boards aren’t categorized well. This would be a good opportunity to consult tip #3 and reorganize your boards.

Fortunately, the process isn’t as painful if you use the repin and delete method.
Go to the board that has the pins you want to move. Repin them to the board you want them moved to . Once you’ve relocated all pins from the board, delete the board. Done!

When you choose a board for repinning, the list of boards is shown in alphabetical order. With the General – Specific format, you can find the right board right away and save a lot of time.

You Should Be Front And Center
You always want your brand boards to go first because you want to be front and center. Its all about you. You want to drive traffic to your blog, not to other peoples websites. If you want to drive traffic to your brand, thats the first thing your viewers should see when they look at your profile.
Of all the boards your most important board is your Best Of board. However, if you want, you can have multiple brand boards for the different categories on your blog. For example, when I started my first blog, I had four categories: Live, Work, Travel and Read. Thus, I had boards: Pingel Sisters Travel, Pingel Sisters Books, Pingel Sisters Life, and Pingel Sisters Work.
Even though I started with brand boards for each of my categories, I have found that those boards dont do as well as my other boards. Looking at my analytics in Tailwind, I can see that they have the lowest engagement of any of my boards.
Still, I would advocate for creating a brand board for each category just to see how they perform. Although most of my brand boards didnt perform well, for us, my Pingel Sisters Books board did well. Therefore, it got its own board because its driving its own traffic.
