What Is A Dm
A direct message is a Twitter feature that allows you to send a private message to a Twitter user.
It is different from mentioning someone because posting a mention is something that can be done in public feed but sending a DM is outside of the public feed.
So when you send a DM to someone or even if you share someone elses tweet with them, only the person you are interacting with will see that DM.
Thats why its called a direct message. You are directly talking to a specific user in private.
What Is A Dm On Twitter
DM simply stands for direct message, or messages sent via Twitter that are private between you and the recipient and do not appear on your feed.
The abbreviation has spread to many other platforms and channels as a way to refer to private messages.
Twitter DMs are a private mode of communication used to start one-on-one conversations with anyone who follows you on Twitter. DMs can also be sent to people who dont follow you only if they have opted in to receive DMs from anyone on the platform or if youve previously direct messaged that person.
Twitter DMs used to be limited to 140 characters, just like public Tweets . But Twitter expanded the character limit of Direct Messages to 10,000 in August 2015. Now, users can also send pictures, videos, GIFs and emojis via DM.

Malicious And Fake Accounts
Between January and late July 2017, Twitter had identified and shut down over 7,000 fake accounts created by Iranian influence operations.
In May 2018, in response to scrutiny over the misuse of Twitter by those seeking to maliciously influence elections, Twitter announced that it would partner with the nonprofit organization Ballotpedia to add special labels verifying the authenticity of political candidates running for election in the U.S.
In December 2019, Twitter removed 5,929 accounts for violating their manipulation policies. The company investigated and attributed these accounts to a single state-run information operation, which originated in Saudi Arabia. The accounts were reported to be a part of a larger group of 88,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior. However, Twitter did not disclose all of them as some could possibly be legitimate accounts taken over through hacking.
Dm Someone On Twitter Without Followers

Yes, you can do that, of course. But the privacy settings of the person you want to send a message must include this option. For example, if an option was selected in the privacy settings such as: I only want to receive messages from the followers list, you cannot send messages to that user. You can just follow that user and send DM. You can also set this option for your account from the privacy settings. So you can block unwanted messages. This is a very necessary setting. Otherwise, you may receive many unwanted messages every day.

Replaced Tweetbot With This
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a user of the various versions of Tweetbot. Upon recently upgrading my MBP I encountered numerous UI issues with Tweetbot. So, I did some checking around and saw that Twitter had an app out for Mac. I’ve been using it, and enjoying that usage, ever since. I haven’t even logged back in to Tweetbot since that day, and will likely delete it after writing this review. I typically find that I do not enjoy apps created by the service, but Twitter has left me pleasantly suprised. My one complaint is that the app routinely encounters an error and shuts itself down at least twice a day. Other than that, the design is wonderful and friendly to use. I can rotate between various accounts. Composing longer tweets is a simple click. Dark mode is pleasing and useful instead of gimicky. The ability to customize the app and settings is user friendly. Well done!
Fines Penalties And Sanctions
Violation of campaign finance laws
In October 2020 Twitter was fined $100,000 by Washington State for violating that state’s campaign finance disclosure rules. A judgement filed on October 13, 2020, found “the social media platform failed to maintain public inspection records of nearly $200,000 paid to it for political ads in violation of state law” according to Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson.

How To Receive Direct Message Requests
How can you tell if someone is trying to DM you? As with other social networks, you will get notifications in Twitter when you have received a new DM.
To see these alerts and how many new DMs you have, look for a bubble with a number in it next to the Messages link in the left rail of your home screen. You can also enable text and email alerts for new Twitter DMs, which can be really handy if you dont want to have the open all the time.
If you have enabled the Receive messages from anyone option, you will receive a request in your message inbox for any incoming messages from people you dont follow including group conversations that youve been added to. To see these requests, simply access your inbox, and from there you can either Delete or Accept the message. You will be able to connect with the person only if you accept the message, and they will not know youve seen their message until it is accepted.
On occasion direct messaging wont work, like if you use a third-party or outside application to send or receive DMs. The issue has to do with permissions, so to check if the app you are using has permission from Twitter to access your DMs, simply log into your Twitter account, click the gear icon, and then click “Settings.”
Additionally, you may be over the 1,000 DM daily limit Twitter has set for its users, so cool your jets for the day and try again tomorrow.

How To Tell Who Muted You On Twitter
A digital social space like can either be a place of curious and intriguing interactions or a bog of false information and negativity. Without a few useful privacy features to restrict information, using Twitter would have been much more difficult than it is. Users always have the option to unfollow or block topics and users, for instance, and sever their connection with those accounts.
There is also a slightly gentler approach that Twitter provides the mute button. With it, you can remove an accounts tweets from your home timeline without the other person knowing. But what if the tables are turned and someone mutes you? The mute button wont be much of a privacy feature if Twitter also let users know who actually muted them.
But there is a roundabout way of figuring out if someone has muted you on Twitter. Heres all about it.

Thats the situation Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos and current defendant, found herself in last month. Hundreds of text messages between Holmes and former Theranos president and chief operating officer Sunny Balwani have been entered into evidence by prosecutors, detailing years of their professional and romantic relationship. Many of the messages will be used by prosecutors to try to prove that Holmes is guilty of wire fraud, but its the personal back-and-forth that may cause alarm for regular people.

In addition to being subpoenaed by law enforcement, private chats can be shared without consent in social groups, on social media, with reporters or end up in civil trials.
