About two weeks ago I made my personal Instagram account public. Since its creation, all of my social media accounts have been set to private to keep my personal information well… personal. As a young college instructor, it just felt appropriate to keep my personal life a bit more private than some of my peers and friends. However, much of what I do professionally revolves around social media, so I use my personal accounts to test and experiment with new algorithms, trends, etc. hence why I decided to make my personal account public for the first time ever.
Important Points About Private Accounts
- Remember that the private posts you share to social networks may be visible to the public depending on your privacy settings for those networks. For example, If you share a post to Twitter that was set to private on Instagram may be visible to the people who can see your Twitter posts.
- Once you make your Instagram account private, people who want to follow you will have to send you a follow request to see your posts.
- All the follow requests which you will receive will appear in
- Activity, where you can approve or ignore them.
- If someone who is already following you before you set your posts to private and you don’t want them to see your posts, you can simply block them.
- Any Instagram user can send a photo or video directly to you even if they’re not following you.

Instagram will ask you to link your business Facebook page or create one. For those unaware, Facebook acquired Instagram a few years ago so there is more integration than ever with the two platforms.
What To Do If Youre Being Harassed
Block someone if necessary. If someones harassing you, such as repeatedly tagging you in photos you dont like or sending you a lot of direct messages or trying to engage you in a creepy conversation, you can block them so they cant tag you, contact you directly or mention you in comments. They also wont be able to see your profile or search for your account. To block a user, go to his or her profile, tap the three dots at the top right, and select Block. When you block an account, that person isnt notified and you can unblock an account at any time.
Report problematic posts. You can report other peoples inappropriate photos, videos, stories, or comments or users who violate Instagrams community guidelines. Just click on the three dots next to the username, then Report.
You can untag yourself. Only the person who posts can tag people in the post, but if that persons profile is public anyone tagged by the poster can untag themselves. You can untag yourself by tapping on your username in a post, but only if the post is public or if you follow the person who tagged you.
Ignore messages labeled Request. If you dont want to receive a message from someone you dont know, ignore any messages in your inbox marked Request. If you want to see images only from people you know, limit who you follow.

How To Make Your Instagram Public Using The App
1. From your iPhone or Android home screen, locate and tap the Instagram app icon to open it.;
2. Locate the profile icon on the far-right side of the toolbar running across the bottom of your screen and tap it to be taken to your profile page.;
3. In the upper-right hand corner of your profile page, tap the three horizontally stacked lines, then tap “Settings.”;
5. Under “Connections,” locate and tap the “Account privacy” option.
6. On the “Account privacy” screen, slide the “Private account” toggle button to the left, which will turn the lever gray and make your account public.

Set Your Account To Private
Setting your account to private is the simplest thing you can do to lock down your profile. It means that, going forward, no one can see your photos or stories unless you approve them.
Once your account is private, new people who visit your profile will only see your name and profile image. From there, they can request to follow you, and you have to confirm their request before they can see your photos or stories.
To set your account to private:
- Go to Instagrams settings menu. Its hidden away on your profile page behind the hamburger button in the top-right corner. That will open a side menu with several choices; you can access your settings from the cog that appears at the very bottom.
- From there, go to Privacy > Account Privacy and activate the Private Account setting.
One important caveat: anyone who already follows you at the time you change your account to private will still be following you. That means if theres anyone you want to deny access to, you have to remove them from your followers list.
To remove someone whos following you:
- Go to your profile, and tap on your follower count
- Scroll through your list, and tap the big Remove button beside the name of anyone you want to get rid of
Make Yourself Less Visible
There are a few things you can do to make yourself a little bit harder to find .
First, you can stop sending your contacts to Instagram. You might have given Instagram access to your contacts initially to help find your friends when signing up, but it means that Instagram knows whos in your phone book. To turn it off:
- Go to Settings > Account > Contacts Syncing
- Disable Connect Contacts
You can also stop Instagram from suggesting your account to others. This happens when someone follows a new account: Instagram will then display accounts it believes are similar, which you could be grouped into. You cant change this using your mobile app. To turn this off:
- Sign into Instagrams website, and go to your profile
- Select the Edit Profile button
- Uncheck the very last option, Similar Account Suggestions
Finally, its worth checking to see whether any of your Instagram posts come up in a Google search. By default, Instagram doesnt let Google find your photos, but if you ever signed into a third-party web viewer , its possible that site is scraping your profile and posting it for all to see.
If one or more of your posts does come up in your search, the first step to getting rid of it is to cut off third-party apps access to your Instagram account. You can do that on the mobile app:
- Go to Settings > Security > Apps and Websites > Active
- Remove any apps you arent using anymore

You Can Schedule Your Posts Ahead Of Time
Another major Instagram update thats now a few years old, but had significant value for marketers was the ability for users to automatically schedule their posts instead of having to just schedule a reminder to manually post content.
