Be Part Of The Twitter Community

One point we stress a lot is that Twitter isnt just a content distribution tool. Its a social network brands can use to connect with their audience. A part of that is being a part of the community.

Too many brands make the mistake of spending little to no time getting to know the Twitter ecosystem.

One of the best ways to get acclimated and participate in the community is to get involved with some relevant . If youre curious about whether or not its ok to join in on Twitter chats from your brands Handle, the answer is yes!

A2: Definitely not. I think they are used more formally in B2B but customers in any industry can benefit from seeing how a product or service can help solve pain points in their lives. Case Studies make things more relatable. #sproutchat

Create A Branded Hashtag

Want to get some user-generated content on Twitter? Start by creating your own branded hashtag.

Branded hashtags give you and your audience a way to easily see all the tweets related to your brand even if they dont include your Twitter handle. Theyre also great for tracking tweets around specific campaigns. For instance, Netflix often has hashtags for its original content. These branded hashtags make it easy to track conversations about new or upcoming shows and movies.

How To Use Twitter For Public Relations

How to make your Twitter tweets public

Shonali BurkeI

So instead, I thought I’d write about how you can use Twitter for PR, be they your own or your clients’/organizations’ public relations efforts.

Where Twitter for PR usually begins… and ends

It’s not that people are not already using Twitter for PR. They are in fact, it’s one of the favorite tools in journalist toolboxes, therefore it’s one of the favorite tools in the toolboxes of PR pros.

But here is where the typical use of Twitter for PR begins, and ends:

1. Publicizing news, blog posts, videos… basically, any kind of content. A lot of companies still only share their own content on Twitter.

2. Retweeting what other people have said about their own companies ad nauseam. You know, the ones that go: “RT @: You’re such a rockstar, @.”

3. Participating in #followfriday, doing a reply-all on Twitter that includes that hashtag , or RTing a Follow Friday tweet you’ve been included in.

4. Live-tweeting from events, using a hashtag that has been set up for the event, or creating one from scratch.

5. Pitching journalists on Twitter.

These activities are pretty standard #4 in particular can be really useful .

I think there are better and worse ways of doing them all for example,

  • #1 should be much more about others’ content than yours
  • #2 makes me barf
  • ditto on the reply-alls and/or RTs for #3

Taking it a step further

There’s a lot more you can do to use Twitter for PR in a smart way. These include:

6. Using Twitter lists smartly.

Automate When It Makes Sense

Theres a good and bad side to social media automation. It can be an extremely helpful way to be more productive, or turn your Twitter account into a complete chatbot that nobody wants to deal with. The key to using well is to be selective about what and how you automate.

Some good examples of Twitter automation would be:

  • Scheduling tweets in advance instead of manually tweeting everything
  • Using a social media management tool to automatically tag incoming Tweets that contain a certain hashtag
  • Using Twitter chatbots to streamline your customer service workflow

On the flip side, some bad examples of Twitter automation are:

  • Sending automatic DMs to new followers spamming them with links
  • Relying solely on automated tweets to handle customer complaints

As a general rule of thumb, try to automate time consuming tasks that dont necessarily require too much manual work.

Get Organized With Twitter Lists

Twitter lists allow you to organize accounts of interest into groups. For instance, you might have a list for influencers you want to engage with, or people who follow you that are customers.

One of the biggest challenges of Twitter is the mass amount of information thrown at you at a single time. As soon as you log into the app youre staring at hundreds, if not thousands of tweets from various accounts with little to no structure. That can be overwhelming to say the least.

When you organize everyone into lists, you can start to create a workflow. For instance, you might check your Customers Twitter list first, then your Influencers list next.

So instead of seeing the latest tweets from everyone you follow, you have mini-streams you can prioritize.

Connect Before Or After An Event

Connecting in person at an event is great, but it can be hard to keep track of all the business cards you pick up and remember who was who.

A Twitter list can be a good way to meet some of your fellow attendees even before the event takes place, so you can prioritize who you want to meet during your limited in-person time.

After the event, a Twitter list of attendees serves as an easy way of continuing to network online.

Check the Twitter profile of the events host or sponsor to see if they have already created a Twitter list of attendees. Its becoming more common, but if the event is not in the tech or social sphere, the hosts may not have thought of a Twitter list as an added benefit for attendees. You could reach out to suggest they create one.

If the hosts dont create a Twitter list of attendees, you could create your own. It likely wont be complete, but you could make a good start with any people you connect with directly at the event, plus the speakers list. You could also add people who tweet with the events hashtag.

Your Twitter Account Needs To Be Authentic

Keep An Eye On The Competition

Twitter is a great tool for keeping an eye on the competition. But you dont want to reward competitors with a follow, or let them know that youre monitoring their tweets.

You dont need to follow people to add them to a list. That makes private lists a great way to keep track of groups of users you dont necessarily want to follow. Just make sure to double-check that your competitors list is set to private before you start adding accounts to the list. If its public, each competitor will get a notification when you add them.

In addition to monitoring tweets, lists offer another way to keep tabs on the competition.

From each competitors profile page, you can see what lists theyre subscribed to, and what lists theyre included on. This can give you valuable information about who your competitors are keeping an eye on and interacting with, so you can do the same.

Stop Measuring Success By Follower Count

This next Twitter tip is less of a tactic and more of a general best practice. In the early days of Twitter before we had access to all the data and analytics tools we have today, one of the most common ways brands measured success was by follower count. The assumption was if you were getting more followers, your strategy was working.

But its 2018 and were past the days of basing all our efforts on the goal of getting 100K Twitter followers. Instead, you can set goals that connect to your larger business objectives. And there are plenty of metrics to track your progress.

These days, brands measure success by:

    • Engagement growth
    • Customer response time
    • Leads generated

Start by thinking of what your brand hopes to accomplish on Twitter. Then set goals around that and decide what metrics youll use to measure your progress.

The moment you begin the journey of integrating your Twitter life along with the other aspects of your internet life, there are quite several applications that would have access to your account. It is therefore smart that you check on the applications that have access to your account. To do this, simply go to your profile settings and choose Apps. To get stuff cleaned, all you need to do is click on revoke access.

    Who Can See My Tweets

    • Public Tweets : Are visible to anyone, whether or not they have a Twitter account.
    • Protected Tweets: Only visible to your Twitter followers. Please keep in mind, your followers may still capture images of your Tweets and share them.

    Turn On The Quality Filter

Twitter’s quality filter prevents you from seeing low-quality content, like duplicate and automated tweets to cut down on spamming. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of muting and blocking words and accounts, this filter might help. Turn it on via Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Notifications and make sure that the quality filter is turned on.

Under Advanced filters, you can opt to mute notifications from people: you don’t follow who don’t follow you with a new account who have a default profile photo who haven’t confirmed their email and who haven’t confirmed their phone number. These options are meant to protect you from accounts used infrequently or anonymously to harass users.

If you’re more private, however, you can choose to protect your tweets, which means that only your followers can see your account information and what you post on Twitter. Here’s how to make your Twitter private.

When you first create your Twitter account, your tweets are public by default, and anyone can follow you. If you protect your tweets, you’ll need to individually approve follow requests.

    Notice When Youre Over

While youre sending out all those tweets, you also want to avoid going overboard.

Tweeting every five minutes can be a bit much for your followers. The last thing you want is for your audience to get annoyed with all your tweets and unfollow you to quiet the noise.

Well touch on this a little more in one of the later tips, but a good way to monitor whether or not youre tweeting too much is to track your engagement.

If you increase your tweet frequency and notice your engagement starts to drop, it could be a sign that youre annoying your followers.
