In this case, play around with the who part of your intro.
If Im at a conference for online course creators, I will adjust my intro slightly and say, I introduce course creators to their next customers. An industry event for insurance brokers? I introduce insurance brokers to their next customers. The opportunities for customizing are endless.
How To Introduce Someone
If youve ever been introduced by someone and cringed, youve felt first-hand why its so important to get introductions right.
Maybe they got your title wrong. Maybe they referred to you as a former roommate: you thought you were real friends. They said you were neighbors when really youre dating. They picked something insignificant to define you by and it woefully stuck with your audience.
Accurate or not, introductions can be stubbornly hard to undo. We may rationally understand that people, places, and situations are rich and complex, but our minds intuitively seek to simplify them–when we meet someone new, we grab just a few pieces of information and file details away for later recall. You might find a valuable prospect who lives in your area, but doesnt share much else with you. Though not as strong as some of the other commonalities on this list, you might use your geographic location as a connection point. Like, Yo! We both live in Seattle, isnt that cool?
The better your reason for reaching out, the more likely youll be to have a successful connection. Choose your approach carefully, and dont spam random people with messages.
Bad Linkedin Introduction #: The Long Letter/block Post
Please dont do this. As far as LinkedIn introductions go, this just screams big block text thats not going to be read. Not only that, but you are just adding more criteria for a prospect to eliminate themselves before they even talk to you. For example:
- Do you only work with Kansas City based clients?
- If you do all languages how is your quality control?
- If you do legal, patent, technical etc. how specialized is your copy going to be?
These are questions that are best brought up during a live conversation, not with a basic introduction. You dont want to give your prospect an excuse to say not interested right off the bat. Try to limit your introductions to one paragraph at most. And please, use spacing!

If You Want Someone To Review Your Resume Or Cover Letter
When making this kind of request, put yourself in the shoes of the receiver and try to answer this question for them up front: Why is this person contacting me? Acknowledge that youre asking them for a favor.

Receiving a carefully formulated request like this is somewhat rare, as it doesnt make any assumption that I can provide a labor-intensive line edit to someones application materials. Again, the acknowledgement that Im using my time to help matters. In cases where Ive been referred to jobseekers by other people Ive helped, Im even more likely to respond. If someone I help then pays it forward by assisting others in their own circles, that makes the investment worth it.
For The Professional Acquaintances
You know these people, but not very well. Thats why its a good idea to subtly include some context. Also, if you can think of some way of providing value to them, mention it.

I unintentionally surprised someone with my request timing or there were nuances I wasnt aware of related to the request. I learned the hard way the most important rule of connecting two people: Ask first. Asking permission gives the other person the grace to accept or decline without making things awkward.

These kinds of thoughtful introductions take time for someone to write, so if youre the person requesting this, you might even offer to write the introduction for them.

Provide Connections For Others
A popular method for recruiters online today is to introduce their connections to each other. This helps all of your connections build their network. There are a couple of steps involved in this process, but we will discuss them for you so it can be done effectively.
First, find the profile of a connection in LinkedIn who might benefit from being introduced to your co-worker or supervisor. Click on that persons profile and then the share button, which is at the bottom left of their profile overview box. This next step is when you enter a name of a connection whom you think would benefit from being introduced to this person. You can enter someones email address or search for them in your LinkedIn connections.
The next step is to write a personal message. This should name the person you are connecting them to and let the person know why you think they should meet each other. This could be for a potential job, a promotion or anything else. When doing this step of the process you can select or deselect the option that allows the recipients to see each others names and email addresses.
If you are not sure if someone would be offended by providing their contact information, make sure this box is deselected. If you know it will be easier to share the info, then select the box and hit send. You have now introduced people to each other on LinkedIn.
A Coworker Youve Never Directly Met
Do you work at the same company? Have you never met in person? Awkward. But dont worry. Something like this ought to do fine. Directly acknowledge the situation, then explain why you want to connect.

I know, this sounds counter-intuitive, but you now have the building blocks for creating multiple perfect intros. You see, there is no one-size-fits-all approach here. You have to adapt your introduction to who youre talking to and keep it fresh. The good thing is, its much easier to do once you have your basic building blocks in place.
Don’t Ask For Any Favors Just Yet
Do not ask for anything from your new connection unless it benefits them in some way.
For example, if you need a quote from them for an upcoming blog post you’re writing, highlight the fact that you’ll be promoting the heck out of it and that it will give them some exposure. You can ask for a favor after you’ve built your professional relationship with this person and you have a history of offering value without asking for anything in return.

Describe this person in a way that includes the person youre talking to I help business owners, or I help marketing executives. Finally, describe what you help them do. What is the result you help them achieve? What do you help them become?

How To Make A Good Introduction:
Introduce a person, not a resume. Introductions by job title or company are common: they are an easy default descriptor for a person. They are also frankly a little bit lazy.
Good introductions are based on who the person you are introducing is as a person, not as a resume. People are typically much more interesting than their jobs might imply.
Thats not to say that you cant or shouldnt mention someones job title or company in an introduction: some situations explicitly call for it , and sometimes a persons profession really is core to who they are. But context is important. The intro by job title isnt always the best option for every situation.
If you do lead with a standard intro , complement the intro with something to make the person more relatable and human. An interesting, flattering tidbit can go a long way.

Think about story, not just facts. Your roommate, or your partner in crime for Whiskey Wednesdays? Your neighbor, or your biking buddy on the weekends? Not only does a story help others remember the person being introduced, but they make the introducer the storyteller more memorable, too.
