Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff.
Instagram introduced the ability for users to make their own augmented-reality filters last August, via the Spark AR Studio. Since then, weve seen a steady stream of user-made filters, and users have made some very creative ones that youll no doubt want to try out for yourself. So how do you get those effects on your face? Its complicated.
The filters have ranged from the generic to the geeky. One trend Ive noticed in particular is Which character are you? filters, in which users essentially have a slideshow run over their heads of characters from various films, anime, and games. The filter stops on the character they supposedly most resemble. Yeah, its kind of dopey, but damn is it fun!
Its a little tricky, and requires a little effort on your part, but if you want to give some of those filters a try, this is your option until Instagram implements a search function in its effects menu. Good luck!
What Are The Best Instagram Filters
The best Instagram filters is very subjective, as it will all depend on the type of look you want to achieve. That said, when it comes to Posts, its said that the Clarendon filter is the most popular across Instagram – this is likely because it gives a bright and vibrant appearance to your shots, and works will across multiple genres. Sutro adds a nice vignette that some will like , while Valencia gives a lovely warm appearance which is particularly nice for landscapes. Its worth experimenting with all of the different filters to find the best one for you, or your type of photography.

Meta Denies Violating Laws
In the same statement, Meta denied using facial recognition which violates any laws in its filters.
The technology we use to power augmented reality effects like avatars and filters is not facial recognition or any technology covered by the Texas and Illinois laws, and is not used to identify anyone, they reassured users.
Meta continued: Nevertheless, we are taking this step to prevent meritless and distracting litigation under laws in these two states based on a mischaracterization of how our features work.
The company also said that it remains committed to delivering AR experiences that people love without needless friction or confusion.
At the time of writing this, its unclear when these facial features will become available again. HITC has reached out to Meta for comment.

How To Strategically Use Instagram Filters
While Instagram has evolved in recent years, filters are still a key editing tool within the platform. The filters you use can quickly set a specific style and tone to your content and create visual cohesion for your brand.
Before discussing how to access Instagram filters, I want to share a few tips for using them strategically for your brand, whether in Instagram posts, stories, or reels.
First, make sure you pick filters that align with your brands tone and style. For example, if youre a vintage furniture company, you could pick filters that offer a slight yellow tint and a less-saturated tone to give a more antique look to your content.
Or if youre an ultra-modern brand, think about choosing filters that use a blue undertone with a high level of brightness.
You also want to pick Instagram filters that accentuate your content. For instance, if youre sharing posts about food, youll want to use filters with high saturations and deeper contrasts, which will make the food look more appetizing.
In contrast, if youre a brand focused on relaxation, you might want more muted colors and saturation that emulate a feeling of calm.

You will notice that there are many different effects to choose from, such as:
