What Motivates You To Perform

What the hiring manager is really asking…

“Are you a hard worker? Am I going to have to force you to produce quality work?”

How to respond: Ideal employees are intrinsically motivated, so tell the hiring manager that you find motivation when working toward a goal, contributing to a team effort, and/or developing your skills. Provide a specific example that supports your response.

Finally, even if it’s true, do not tell an employer that you’re motivated by bragging rights, material things, or the fear of being disciplined.

Straight Up Ask For Endorsements

One thing Ive learned in life, as well as in business, is that its important to ask.

Some of my biggest breakthroughs were simply the result of me asking for help, a favor, etc.

And you know what?

A lot of people are more than willing to help you out.

Tactic #1

If youre looking to raise your number of endorsements quickly, I suggest politely asking others to give them to you.

An article on Portfolium discusses a specific formula for increasing endorsements by asking.

Its simple.

The author, Scott, created a brief message that he sent to 300 connections asking for endorsements.

Heres what it looked like:

Id like to point out his opening line:

What skills do you want to be endorsed for?

I think this is a more effective way to approach people than immediately asking for an endorsementit doesnt make you come across as overly self-serving.

After sending this message to 300 connections, Scott saw a drastic increase in his number of endorsements.

It went from a meager 28 to 302, which was an increase of over 1,000%!

The amazing thing is that it took less than 15 minutes.

Tweak this template as you see fit, and send it to as many connections as possible.

While you may not get quite the level of results that Scott did, I can pretty much guarantee youll see a substantial spike in your number of endorsements.

Tactic #2

Heres another simple way to go about asking.

Some examples might include your blog and email.

Heres what you do.

This allows you to connect with people and even get the conversation started with your prospects.

Linkedin Endorsements Vs Linkedin Recommendation :

LinkedIn has two different features, endorsements, and recommendations that look similar but have different uses. New users get confused with these two features, so lets see the difference.

LinkedIn Endorsements is a one-click process to verify your specific skills by your connections. They act as a verification of your particular skill. Endorsements are really very important as they enable your connections to back up your skills.

LinkedIn Recommendations is like a note by your client or senior for/with you who have worked on a project recommending others to work with you according to their work experience with you. They are recommending your potential clients to work with you. You can use this feature to take remarks from your client / senior on projects.

Who Am I To Talk About Linkedin Endorsements

Before we dive into the details, I wanted to provide a little background on my experience with LinkedIn and why I’m qualified to give this advice.

As a job seekers, I was super frustrated by all of the fluffy career advice online. It was confusing and most of what I tried never worked. The best thing I learned was to only take advice from people who already had what I wanted.

In this case, that’d be success on LinkedIn! Specifically with skills, endorsements, and visibility.

I started seriously using LinkedIn back in 2014 as a job seeker. I leveraged the tactics I’m sharing in this post to create a LinkedIn profile that helped me win more jobs.

I eventually landed interviews and offers at Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. I accepted the offer from Microsoft, which I landed due to a recruiter finding my profile and reaching out to me:

Later on, I started creating content on LinkedIn. I grew my following from 3,000 people to 100,000+ in less than 12 months. Then I continued to grow it from 100k to 875k in the time since.

Focusing on skills specifically, I have 100+ endorsements for my top skills and dozens of endorsements for the other skills on my profile:

Those skills, combined with some of the other strategies we’ll talk about in this post, have resulted in my profile showing up in 12,500+ searches every single week:

Now I want to teach you the same strategies I used so you can get a taste of those results for yourself!

Ask For Endorsements On Linkedin

How to get endorsed on LinkedIn

This is the trickiest of all techniques: how to ask for endorsements on your LinkedIn profile. You want people to acknowledge your skills and strengths, but you don’t want to come off as begging for disingenuous endorsements.

Instead of sending tons of generic please endorse me messages, personalize your requests by making note of a specific project you worked on with each person you ask. Gently remind them of your contributions, and ask them to offer comments on the project in the form of skill endorsements.

How Long Will My Linked In Endorsements Last

Again, if you opt for a high-quality company, then you are going to have no issues keeping your LinkedIn endorsements around.

However, if you opt for a company that is selling low-quality engagement, then there is every chance that this engagement is going to fall off again after just a couple of days, which of course is not going to do your LinkedIn profile any favors.

The Rule Of Reciprocation

The other active way of getting endorsements is to start endorsing other people.

Think about it.

What would you do if you got an endorsement out of nowhere?

At the very least you would be curious, but wouldn’t you also feel the urge to give an endorsement back?

This is the reason why a lot of establishments offer you something for free, that act of generosity compels people to also be generous.

Giving is often rewarded by being given to.

So, look through your list of people that you’re connected.

Are there people there that are worthy of getting an endorsement from you?

Start giving them out.

We’ve found that the more endorsements we give out, the more endorsements we also get in return.

Give Endorsements To Other Colleagues Before Expecting Some Of Your Own

Although this may seem obvious, it is still worth saying. One of the most effective ways to get a Linkedin endorsement is to first give a Linkedin endorsement. Give honest opinions about your colleagues and only give endorsements to ones that you can really vouch for, dont start giving to everyone you know because that will make you even less credible.

Just small acts like this will mean a lot to them and your reward may even be an endorsement of your own. You dont always have to do everything by yourself, people on Linkedin all have the same common goal: which is to find a job that suits them and we can all work together towards that goal.

Applying for a job is never easy, no matter what accolades you may have. You will have to send a resume, get interviewed, possibly take a test, and many more before even getting employed as it is quite a rigid process. Linkedin helps us make that process a bit simpler as technology has taken over the world. Instead of going out to offices, we may now do everything online but its up to us how we want to make the most of this opportunity.

How To Ask For An Endorsement

Now that you have your list of 20+ people, it’s time to reach out!

Most people think that they’re asking for a LinkedIn endorsement so, naturally, the best place to ask is on LinkedIn, right?

Not quite. The best place to reach people is where they want to be reached.

If someone is active on LinkedIn, then by all means. But if someone hasn’t updated their profile in a while or you haven’t seen activity on their profile, you might be better off using email or texting them.

Put yourself in their shoes!

Once you know how you’re going to reach out, you’re going to need to draft up your message. A great endorsement ask has five parts:

  • Context around the ask
  • Three specific skills you’d like to have endorsed
  • Instructions for how to endorse your skills
  • An offer to reciprocate in some way
  • An Exit Clause to remove the pressure
  • Here’s the template that I like to work off of:

Tip #: Focus Your Endorsements On Your Top Skills

If you head to any LinkedIn profile, you’ll notice that LinkedIn defaults to showing the three skills that have the most endorsements on your profile:

We obviously want our most relevant skills to be most the most visible, but that’s only one reason to pay attention here.

The other is that we are going to see more visibility when we have more endorsements for relevant skills.

If your top three skills aren’t relevant, you won’t show up in as many relevant searches and people viewing your profile won’t see relevant skills right off the bat. That’s a negative double whammy that we want to avoid.

So what should you do? Easy!

When requesting endorsements, mention the specific skills that you want to have endorsed.

Instead of just asking someone to endorse your skills, ask them to endorse Skill 1, Skill 2, and Skill 3. Then repeat with the majority of people you reach out to for endorsements.

If you do that, you’ll take control of the top skills on your profile and reap the benefits.
