So far, Ive showed you how to find high quality connections on LinkedIn by searching for people. Did you know you can also search LinkedIn for content? When you find relevant content you can also see who is creating it, and engaging with it, and this show you people you want to connect with who will be likely to engage with the content you create.
Im going to continue with the search for executive coaches by looking for coaches who are actively engaging with content on LinkedIn.
To start out simple, lets do a search for executive coaching and see what comes up. First I do the search, and then on the search results page Im going to click on content to only see results within content, rather than matches to people and groups and such.
The first few results dont appear relevant, but then I come to this post that seems like its potentially relevant.
I see that Averil Maher has commented recently, which tells me she is active on LinkedIn and comments on posts. I also see that shes a business coach which is more relevant to me than a life coach or various other types of coaches. Lets take a closer look by clicking through to her profile.

Invite Other People In Your Network To Connect After Finding Them On An Advanced Search
This is the most popular way method of how to get more connections on LinkedIn when you want to scale your network growth quickly. It is also the way that most work.
The value of LinkedIn is that there is no other site for professionals where you can absolutely pinpoint and contact a person in a certain industry with a certain company and title.
If you are in sales , LinkedIn is like a heaven-sent gift.
That being said, you will get kicked out of LinkedIn if you do not respect the wishes of others that do not want to be bothered by invites, which they will report back as spam .
Many CEOs that I have met have commented that they saw LinkedIn as merely a way of getting back in touch with old colleagues. However, the people you find in your concentrated search that you absolutely would like to contact but are not part of any common group or show any preference to open networking and have few if any mutual connections are the most difficult yet sometimes the most valuable people to be in contact with.
Before inviting these people, I suggest that you send them an InMail, or if they have an email address listed somewhere in their profile, first send them an email indicating why you would like to connect with them. If they have a paid LinkedIn account, you might be able to .

So, you cant connect with someone on LinkedIn. Its really frustrating when this happens, especially when expanding your professional network is vital for your work.
You want to be able to reach out and make connections in person, but its not happening.

Refresh Your Linkedin Profile
Before reaching out to your connections, make sure your profile is complete and showcases your full professional background. Think of your LinkedIn profile as a storefront for your professional brand and less as a resume.
To do this, create a compelling headline and summary, fill out all of your prior work experience and education so you can connect with individuals from prior shared companies and educational institutions. Join the alumni groups of prior schools and companies to connect with former classmates and colleagues.
Add an updated profile photo and a business-focused cover image. Reorder, add and delete skills. Ensure your contact information is added to your profile. Consider uploading rich media and add items to the Featured section to enhance your profile.
Leverage Local Networking Groups
If you belong to a local networking group, look through your membership directory and send LinkedIn connection requests to individual members. Even if you dont remember meeting someone in person, use your shared real-world connection to personalize your connection request and start to get to know that person online.
For example, you could say something like Were both members of , and I would love to connect here, too. Then head to your next networking meeting newly armed with great networking info.
Search for local group members in LinkedIn groups. You may find them there, too.

What Is A Connection Request On Linkedin
Member level members can send a connection request to invite someone else to their LinkedIn network. The person being asked has the ability to accept or refuse the invitation.
Researchers have found that a lead may be less likely to connect with a stranger on LinkedIn because there is no opportunity for engagement before an acceptance, but are likely to review your linkedin profile before deciding, so make sure your profile reflects your best online presence, with up to date work history, achievements and highlights.
The best way you can get your leads connected is by connecting them through top of the funnel content at the start, and then work your way down as they become ready for deeper engagements like sales-oriented software demonstrations and product white papers.
With this strategy, leads will never need to reject your connection request because theyve already seen you deliver value in advance and theyll be more open when you ask for their interest later on!
Send A Custom Message With Your Connection Request
You’ve put in the time and effort, now it’s time to finally make the connection. Since they most likely get flooded with a ton of requests, you’ll want to make yours stand out by customizing it. This goes beyond mentioning their name or something you could have learned by quickly scanning their profile. The more customized the message, the more likely you’ll get a response.

Increase The Size Of Your Network By Connecting With People You Know
When you are ready to start connecting with your colleagues or clients, make sure that you create a formal introduction to first start the process. What is a Formal Introduction? Your introduction is a short explanation of your profile so that the person could share your profile on their own profile. This step is important because people can share your profile on their LinkedIn profile if you mention them in the introduction. For example, my target audience is c-suite executive job seekers, so I would search titles like these:
Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, etc.
For each of the above, I’d put the job title in the search field and click on “People” then, using Advanced Search, I have the options at the top of the search page to narrow my search by “Connections,” “Locations,” “Current Companies,” or other filters using “All Filters.”

Positive Tips And Things To Do
Instead of adding 500 random people that you don’t know and couldn’t care less about, here are some tips on how to build real connections and do this the right way.
1. Personalize your connection requests. Above all else, the number one thing you should be doing is personalizing your connection requests. You don’t have to write a long personal email. Even if you wanted to, you can’t – LinkedIn connection request messages have a character limit of 300, only a little longer than a tweet. You don’t have the space to do a lot.
I like a simple, relatively template-based format. Something like:
“Hi , I’m James from ContentPowered. I’ve been for a while now, and I thought I would reach out and connect with you here. I’d also love to work with you on a project if we get the chance. Thanks for your time!”
This is just an example I came up with on the spot. There are a lot of different situations you might find yourself in, though, such as sending a message to someone you met in person, or someone you’ve worked with before but who might not remember you. Often you won’t be the one initiating the connection request. In fact, if you’re active on LinkedIn, you may be inundated with requests. In most cases, it makes sense to accept every connection invitation, even if it’s just a generic request to connect. After all, if the connection turns out to be a meaningless one or they start spamming you with requests, you can always remove them from your network.
When you receive an invitation, it’s a good idea to take a peek at the person’s profile. LinkedIn profiles will often contain just the information you need to figure out how to turn a connection into a meaningful one.
For example, if you get an invitation to connect and that person works for a company you’ve always admired, you can message him back after accepting the connection and tell them how you feel about their company. After you’ve taken the time to have a few conversations with them and perhaps done them a favor or two, you can then take the next step and ask for their help with getting a job there. Here’s a sample LinkedIn response:

Lets go back to that party for a moment . Youve seen someone over the other side of the room that you REALLY want to talk to. They may be your ideal customer or perhaps they work in a space where they can introduce you to lots of other relevant people. How are you going to get to talk to them?
You can go up to them and start chatting. Thats one approach but it can be risky. First impressions are SO important that if you fluff it up, that could be the end before its the beginning if you see what I mean.
The other option is to have a look around and see if there is someone that you know who could introduce you to said person. Quick room scan and, yes! So you head over to your connection, ask them to introduce you. Sorted.

Who Should Be In Your Linkedin Network
Lets start by talking about WHO should be in your LinkedIn network.
Think about your LinkedIn network right now. Whos in your network?
Is it filled with colleagues that youve worked with in the past? Recruiters you got connected with in order to land a job? Prospects you reached out to ages ago? Business colleagues youd like to collaborate with?
Think about that ratio right now.
Are there any specific groups missing or in poor supply?
If so, these are a great place to start.
If youre trying to grow your network FAST, you might want to focus first on people whom you already know on other social media channels or in professional associations or other online groups.
If people are already familiar with your name or share a common interest, they are more likely to accept.
Heres an example of how I applied this for myself:
I recently joined a course called Digital Course Academy designed by Amy Porterfield, and I noticed a number of people in that community whom I felt would be a great addition to my LinkedIn network for a variety of reasons.
I began reaching out to them individually and started having a HUGE number of one-to-one conversations in my LinkedIn DMs as a result.
