How to create ads on Pinterest

On the page where you create your ad group, youll be asked to set a maximum CPC bid. This is the maximum amount that you want to pay per audience action, whether thats impressions, clicks, engagement or app download. You wont be charged the full bid unless its necessary to beat out the next-highest bidder.

    Now that youre ready to advertise, you first need to know what your goals are.

    • Do you want to sell more product?

    Youll see a list of ad campaigns to choose from, each with a description of what you get.

    For this example, Im going to choose, Boost engagement with your Pins.

    Another good one for e-commerce stores is, Get traffic to your website.

    More than purchases, I want follows and saves.

    Then, give your campaign a name and set your budget .

    On the next screen, give your ad group a name.

    You can also set start and end dates here, or leave that blank to run the campaign until you decide to end it.

    Next up is targeting your ad to the right people.

    Register For A Business Account

    If you havent used Pinterest before, youll need to create a new account. Its free to set up, and it takes less than a minute. Start by going to Pinterests Business Account page and clicking Sign Up.

    Enter your email address, password and business name, select your business category from the drop-down menu and click Create account.

    Follow the next steps, which are self-explanatory. These include selecting your language and country, adding your website URL and picking at least five categories in which youre interested.

    If you already have a Pinterest account, log in and click on Settings. It will say Business Account Basics on the top left if its a business account. If its a personal account, you can convert it to a business account by going to this link.

    • Image size: Pinterest Pins show up in two sizes: square and long. You may want to use a square Pin at some point , but long Pins take up more real estate and are more visible. Pinterest recommends images with a 2:3 aspect ratio that are 1,000 by 1,500 pixels. Long Pins can be 1,000 by 2,100 pixels, but any longer than that and theyll be truncated, which is negative yardage for your brand.
    • Image quality: Beautiful images are essential. If youre creating the images yourself, use high-resolution photos, follow the rule of thirds, and favor the close-up.
    • Image type: Pinterest gurus promise that warm colors get more clicks than those in a cool palette. And undersaturated images perform better, too.
    • Leave room for text: That rule of thirds will pay double dividends here by allowing you to add copy in a way that enhances your ad without devaluing your photo.

    Billed By The Campaign

    They are billed with the campaign level and not the ad group level anymore. That means you can put multiple ad groups in one campaign and test out your budget across all ad groups to figure out which one is the winning campaign.

    I recently did this in a client account. She was getting a lot of conversions on her ad before the end of the year, and then her ads shut off. She wanted to restart.

    We restarted with her budget on a consideration campaign with five ad groups. So the campaign actually spread that money over all the ad groups, and we were quickly able to figure out which ad group was the winning ad group and put all of that budget towards that one group.

    Within that timeframe we saw a 2.25x ROAS on the winning ad group. Within 30 days of turning those ads on, we actually started to see that pickup.

    Even If Your Campaign Doesnt Go Well You Are Collecting Data

    If your campaign doesnt go well, thats ok because you are collecting data.

    • What kinds of keywords work?
    • What imagery worked?
    • What happened on the landing page when someone hit?
    • Did you install hotdoor, and can you see where they left the page?

    These are all the things that you want to know if you are launching a promoted pin campaign for the first time. That way, you know you are set up for conversion events. If you are not set up for conversion events, then you need to tweak things and make sure that you get that setup.

    When I started this campaign in March, I was struggling with my event codes on leadpages, and I ended up migrating the entire funnel to Elementor mid promoted-pin campaign. I just built all the funnels on Elementor and then flipped the switch with the URLs, and it was flawless.

    There was no interruption in anything that happened, and thats when I noticed that in the second two weeks the conversion started flowing in. So I think my Elementor pages were built for better conversion overall and my event codes were firing correctly when I built them the second time.

For example, consider a name such as US – Brand name – Mugs – Ocean Mug so the ad location, product brand, product category, and product name are included.

    Open A Business Account

    First things first: youâll need a Pinterest business account to create promoted pins. To open your business account, simply go to , fill out the few form fields, and click âcreate accountâ.

    Another option is to convert your personal account to your business account, which you can do by navigating to their account conversion page and filling out the same form fields. Once you click âcreate account,â your account is converted.

    While this first step is straightforward, the next one takes a bit more patience.

    Jump On The Hashtag Bandwagon

    Pinterest recently changed its tune on hashtags, and hashtags are now popping up on feeds everywhere. Theyre a way to see what pins are the newest and most relevant now that we cant see re-pin counts.

    If you want to be found by followers who fall into your target audience, nows the time to dive onto the hashtag bandwagon.

    You can use relevant hashtags in your pin descriptions like these pinners have:

    To use hashtags type # and then the keyword you want to use. Youll notice itll provide popular suggestions. Those will be the types of hashtags people will be plugging into the search bar so select them strategically.

    Observe And Gather Ad Results

    When the ad campaign is underway, you might be eager to constantly check its progress in the ads overview dashboard.

    Im there with you, but be wary of jumping to conclusions. Youll want to give your test enough time to produce statistically significant results before analyzing, which can take anywhere from hours to weeks. In simpler terms, youll want to get your ads in front of as many people as you can before parsing the data.

    Write Relevant And Helpful Content

    Now that youve started a blog, write 5-10 blog posts related to your niche that will solve your readers problems.

    Before you start writing, take a step back and figure out who your target audience is.

    I always recommend choosing something you enjoy talking about.

    Dont choose a topic just because you think it will make money. Sure, it may work out, but can you really keep writing about something you dont have a genuine interest in?

    The last thing you want is your blog to feel like a chore.

    Buyable Pins arent available to everyone yet, but if you use Shopify or BigCommerce, youre in luck!

    You have to meet a few guidelines first:

    • Include an email or phone number in your about section
    • Have a profile photo

    Then, log in to either Shopify or BigCommerce and follow their instructions for enabling Buyable Pins.

    Youll be able to tell exactly who came from this campaign and made a purchase on your site in Google Analytics.

    To view your campaign results, click on Acquisition, and then click, Campaigns.

    In our tire example, the campaign name would be, winter_ready_promo.

    Note: For Google Analytics to display sales numbers alongside your campaign, you need to have e-commerce conversion tracking setup.

    Get A Business Account

    Before you can begin creating promoted pins, you must have a business account. If you already have your business account, you can skip to the next step.

    Pinterest outlines the steps for creating a business account. Its completely free to set up an account and access analytics tools to monitor your pages performance.

    Research Your Keywords First

    The very first thing you are going to do is start researching your keywords. This is important because this is a search-only campaign. I would suggest starting with 100 to 150 keywords. You can do more than that or even less. I would do a minimum of 25 at the very least.

    Within the first few weeks, you are going to be archiving keywords to optimize the campaign.

    When youre running your campaign, you will set a bid amount for how much youre willing to pay when someone sees, engages, or clicks on your ad. The actual amount is determined by other bidders that are bidding for the same placement.

    Track Your Overall Campaign Metrics For Your Defined Goals

    One thing you need to do in the beginning is to set your expectations to figure out what your goals are for this campaign and what KPIs you need to track.

    In my case, I wanted to track sign-ups and tripwire sales. So I needed to track two different events inside the campaign. You can still do this in consideration campaigns as long as your events are placed correctly on your site.

    I made sure my sign-up event codes were placed, and then I also made sure my checkout event codes were placed in the correct locations.

    So know what your objective is and what your KPIs need to be.

    Install The Conversion Tag Onto Your Site

    will give you incredibly valuable information, telling you what actions users take on a site after theyve clicked on a Promoted Pin. Instead of just measuring the number of clicks, you can actually track how valuable that click was to you.

    The conversion tag also lets you track activity on your site period, so that you can set up retargeting campaigns.

    The event codes are attached to the base code on pages where you want to track specific events, like conversions, add to carts, and sign-ups. You would add the checkout tag to the thank you for your order page, which might only flag if users purchase, for example.

    Youll be shown the steps above, giving you your base code and then the different event codes, which you can customize and then add to the main tracking snippet.

    All pages of your site should have the base code, and you can add specific events to different key pages.
