Read receipts are exactly what they sound like. They are receipts or confirmation that the recipient of your email received and opened your message. Professionals in marketing commonly used them to measure the effectiveness of an email campaign. Other business professional use read receipts to help them gauge how to approach follow-up communication. If people aren’t even opening your emails, are they worth pursuing?
If you’re looking for tips for Gmail, turning on read receipts is definitely one to know, although Google’s own version of this feature has pretty serious limitations. Once you see how it works, you might decide to enable read receipts for Gmail through a third-party plug-in instead.
Select The Appropriate Organization
This step only applies to you if youve created suborganizations in your Admin console. If you havent, you can move on to the next step. If you have, head to the Organizations list on the left side of the console, and select the specific organizational unit for which youre configuring this setting.
Request A Read Receipt
Important: Youll see any read receipts in your Inbox. The person you sent the message to may have to approve the read receipt before youre notified.

How To Send An Inconspicuous Read Receipt In Gmail With Email Tracking
The read receipt feature in Gmail is a great sales tool for beginners and small teams.
But how can you tell if an email has been read in Gmail without a read receipt?
Heres the good news:
If youre looking for increased functionality, less conspicuous tracking, and more intuitive email insights email tracking is an excellent alternative.
Request Read And/or Delivery Receipts For All Messages That You Send
On the File menu, select Options> Mail.
Under Tracking, select the Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient’s e-mail server or Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message check box.
Tip: As a best practice, consider tracking only single messages of importance instead of all messages. Recipients who occasionally receive a notification that a read receipt is requested on your message are more likely to send a read receipt than if they are prompted every time that they receive a message from you.
Click OK to apply your changes.

How To Turn Read Receipts On
Heres the tutorial on how to turn read receipts on.
Step 1: Open Outlook from your desktop.
Step 2: Then open the Tools menu and click Options.
Step 3: Tap E-mail Options in the Preferences tab.
Step 4: In the Message Handling section, click the Tracking Options button. Then tap Read Receipt or Delivery Receipt under For all messages I send, request.
Step 5: Tap OK to execute the changes and close the window.
How Gmail Read Receipt Work
Read receipt in Gmail work in a such a way that users get notifications from recipients using different email systems which support read receipts.
Some email systems will ask for recipients approval before sending a receipt notification to the email sender.
However, the receipt may be sent automatically without recipients approval if the recipient opens it using an IMPAP, POP, or a Google Workspace Sync client.

If you receive a request for a read receipt and need to approve it, heres how to return the request:
1. Open Gmail on your computer and log in to your work account.
2. Go through your emails.
3. If a read receipt is requested for a specific email, a pop-up will appear after opening the email with the prompt: One or more senders in this conversation have requested a read receipt.
4. Click on the blue Send receipts button to send the notification to the sender immediately.
You can also select the grey Not now button to be prompted again the next time you open the email.

Maybe you view your email on the web rather than in a mail app. In that case, you can usually find a setting to block remote images somewhere in your email services settings. Some of these services offer more fine-grained settings than Apples Mail apps. For instance, you may be able to block most remote images, but show images from your contacts. Watch out for this, because your contacts may also be using email tracking software.

How To Get A Gmails Outdated Read Receipt With Google Workspace
As previously mentioned, the first problem with Gmails read receipt is how it breaks the natural flow of conversations.But theres another limitation too: not only is its usability is not optimal. Its also only available to Google Workspace customers.Without access to Google Workspace, Gmail read receipts are unavailable. Also, these read receipts will be received automatically only from email addresses within the Google Workspace organization. This means usually a business or an educational institute. The major drawback is that you can only request a read receipt. When the recipient opens your email, Gmail will give them the option to send you a read receipt.

How To Enable Read Receipts In Google Workspace Gmail
Currently, doesnt offer read receipts in the mobile Gmail app. This is only available on the desktop Google Workspace Gmail, which is a bit strange considering how many work professionals use a mobile device.
The read receipts feature is switched off by default, so you need to ask your Workspace account administrator to enable the feature. Then it can take up to 24 hours for the feature to appear. If youre the account administrator, heres where you need to go and do.
Now go to Apps> Google Workspace> Gmail. Then select User settings on the right-hand side, where youll find a Email read receipts section.
Upon opening up the Email read receipts section, this is what youll see. You can either restrict read receipts to email addresses on your domain and whitelisted external addresses. Or you can enable read receipts for any email address at all. It depends on how much control you want to exert over your companys email usage. Make your selection and click Save.
Now you just need to wait for the feature to be turned on, which can take up to 24 hours.
How Gmail Read Receipt Works Against You And What To Do About It
There are 2 main reasons why read receipts in Gmail are not perfect.
First, if you are using native read receipts in Gmail, your recipients are required to approve their âreadâ verification. When given that option, most people will choose not to let you know theyâve read your email.
On top of that, this feature is only available for paying users. Meaning if you are not part of a Google Workspace subscription, and just using Gmail, you wonât be able to use native email tracking in Gmail.

Request Or Return A Read Receipt
This feature is only available if you use Gmail for work or school set up by an administrator. If you use a gmail.com account, read receipts wont work.
To find out when an email you sent was opened, you can request a read receipt. A read receipt is sent to you as an email with the time and date of when your message was opened.

Problems With Gmails Read Receipt Feature
1. Cant Be Used for Regular Gmail Accounts
The primary issue with Gmails read receipts is that they cant be used with personal Gmail email accounts. If you dont have a G Suite account, youll have to use email marketing programs like GMass to track email opens.
2. Need the G Suite Admins Permission
Even if youre using a G Suite account, you need the G Suite administrators permission to use read receipts.
It doesnt matter whether youre using the Gmail web app on Chrome, Firefox, or the Opera browser. The same goes for the Gmail app for Android and iPhone if the admin hasnt enabled read receipts, you cant use it.
3. No Guarantee on Receiving a Read Receipt
Sometimes, Gmail lets your email recipients decide if they want to send a read receipt to you.
And what can you do if they choose not to send a read receipt notification?Nothing.
Theres no way to verify that theyve opened your email if they decline to inform you.
4. Impractical for Email Marketers
Read receipts can be incredibly helpful for email marketing theoretically! They could help marketers easily verify if their emails are being opened or not.In reality, using Gmail to track this is impractical. Heres why:

How To Enable Email And Link Tracking With Cirrus Insight
Heres how to send an inconspicuous read receipt in Gmail with Cirrus Insight.
First, you have to enable the feature in your inbox:
1. Click on the wrench icon at the top right of the blue Cirrus Insight sub-navigation bar. This will take you to Settings.
2. Under the Email section on the left side panel, click on Tracking.
3. Check the boxes for both Enable Email Tracking and Enable Link Tracking.
Now you will receive relevant data from both of these features.
4. To turn email tracking on by default rather than enabling it for each email check the box that says: Track Emails by Default.
5. To receive real-time notifications when a recipient opens your email, check the box that says: Enable Real Time Notifications.
You will now receive browser push-notifications when an email has been opened.
6. Send your message to your prospects like normal.

How To Stop Email Tracking
Luckily, blocking this privacy-invading trick is easy. You just have to stop your email client app from loading those linked images. On iOS, go to the Settings app, open the Mail settings, and scroll down until you see Load Remote Images. Toggle the switch to off.
Now, your iPhones built-in Mail app will no longer load tracking pixels. With remote loading switched off, if an email contains images, youll see a banner at the top of the screen, asking if you want to load them. But even if your boss also sent you other images in the email, all is not lost. This setting only blocks remote images. Any images actually attached to the email will behave as normal. You can look at them, no problem.
