If youre like me, you probably use Google many times a day. But chances are, unless you’re a technology geek, you probably still use Google in its simplest form.

If your current use of Google is limited to typing in a few words and changing your query until you find what youre looking for, Im here to tell you that theres a better way — and its not hard to learn.

On the other hand, even if you are a technology geek and can use Google like the best of them already, I still suggest you bookmark this article of Google advanced search tips. Then, youll then have the tips on hand when you’re ready to pull your hair out in frustration watching a neophyte repeatedly type in basic queries in a desperate attempt to find something.

The following Google advanced search tips are based on my own experience and things that I actually find useful. Ive kept the descriptions of the search tips intentionally terse, as youre likely to grasp most of these simply by looking at the example from Google anyway.

Here’s an overview of some of the most useful Google search tricks. You’ll be an expert Google search-er in no time.

Connect And Communicate With Your Target Prospects

After you locate your targets, connect with them. Here are some ways to do that:

Send a customized invitation. Even though youre limited to 300 characters, add as much of your voice and personality as you can to the invitation to new connections.

Ask for an introduction. Sometimes, emailing or phoning a shared contact is the best way to ask for an introduction. However, you can also click the Introduction link on your prospects profile.

Search your connections connections. Find people your connections know, like, and trust. Go to a connection and in their bio section to see their network. to expand it into a search box. Now, do a search on a keyword or title.

Invite a connections connection. When you send a request to someone with whom you have a mutual friend, be sure to reference that person. A simple Hello , I see that we share in common. I would like to add you as a connection in my network.

Remember, only use LinkedIn Messenger to with your prospects and clients. Dont spam your connections with your free webinar or a pitch for your new product. After a few messages back and forth, you can ask for a phone call or a meeting.

Even though there are many methods to reach out and connect with your ideal clients, partners, and prospects, dont invite everyone. Youre limited to 3,000 invitations in total.

Linkedin Boolean Search Operator : Not

The NOT function because it specifically tells LinkedIn not to include one or more certain keywords in a search.

Before digging into the next LinkedIn search option, it’s worth taking a moment to briefly explain the different .

The most basic option, Career gives you tools to stand out to recruiters, such competitive analysis with other applicants and the ability to contact recruiters directly, in addition to an educational library.

The next plan is Business , designed for those seeking to promote and grow their business through networking on LinkedIn.

Then we get to the two plans that offer special search filters: Sales Navigator and plans. The Sales plan provides users with additional tools and insights to help salespeople find leads and build relationships on LinkedIn. The Hiring plan is focused on giving recruiters the tools they need to find and acquire top talent.

Is a LinkedIn Premium account worth it for better search? We’ll leave that up to you, but hopefully notations in this guide of whether or not a premium account is needed for a particular search filter will help you decide. You really need to go through the results here carefully and only keep the checks on those people that:

  • are on LinkedIn and 2
  • you feel will add value to your network.
  • One final note here is that I recommend you DO NOT invite anyone who is not currently a member of LinkedIn. We all find out the hard way, but LinkedIn places an initial limit on the number of invitations that can be sent out to 3,000. Thats definitely a lot of invitations that will take you time to burn through, but you will burn through them as you navigate through the members of this 700+ million strong community and build your network.

    # 7 Refine Results With Boolean Search On Linkedin

    To make your LinkedIn search even more precise, learn Boolean commands to help LinkedIn understand what you are looking for even better.

    • Quotes: wrap the phrase in quotation marks to look for that exact phrase
    • AND: using the AND command you can make LinkedIn search for every word in your query .
    • OR: use the OR command to let LinkedIn know that you are searching for either this keyword or another one .
    • NOT: using NOT will exclude the word after it from the search .
    • Parenthesis : using this command is a bit more complex, but its great if you want to combine terms .

    How about if you want to give LinkedIn a choice two or more results that it can give you?

    This is where the OR syntax comes in.

    You place an OR if you want to receive results that match any of the keywords or phrases that you put in.

    Here’s an example, if you wanted a digital marketing consultant or a digital marketing expert, and you don’t really mind which of the two LinkedIn throws at you, then all you have to do is to put OR in the middle of the search.

    So, now your search will look a little something like this.

    This function allows you to limit your searches with one or more keywords.

    It becomes even more powerful if you combine it with quotation marks, and put everything together.

    Use To Organize Your Search

    Ready to take it up a notch? The last three strategies are great for simple searches, but what if you have a long, specific search phrase?

    When you start adding more than two keywords separated by the search operators above, you must know how to use parentheses and brackets. If you dont use them , LinkedIn will give you the wrong results .

    First, this is the overall order of precedence that LinkedIn uses for search phrases, starting from first to last:

  • Quotes
  • AND
  • OR
  • Now, here are a few examples. Say youre looking for a vice president at Dell or Apple, so you search this phrase:

    Dell OR Apple AND VP

    What LinkedIn will actually give you is this, because AND has precedence over OR:

    Dell OR

    The search phrase will give you muddled up results for anyone working at Dell or with Apple and VP in their job title.The correct phrase you want to use is this:

    AND VP

    This phrase will only return results for VPs that work at Dell or Apple.

    Lets look at another example that combines everything. Say youre looking for a director president in the financial industry who is not in inside sales.

    Director OR President NOT inside sales AND financial services

    If you entered the phrase above into LinkedIn, the search engine would read it like this:

    Director OR AND financial services

    Why? If you dont include parentheses, LinkedIn will use the order I listed above to decipher what you mean. Clearly, thats not what youre looking for, so heres how to do it the right way:

    If you would like to find profiles which include one or more terms you can separate those terms with the uppercase OR.

    • “Rutgers University” OR “Penn State University”

    • J2EE OR “Java Enterprise Edition” OR JEE OR JEE5

    The search tool on LinkedIn brings many features and advantages. Whether youre looking to connect with potential employers or find new leads for your business, you can easily narrow your search on the platform.

      As LinkedIn has been growing at an incredible pace, we’ve been actively using the platform ourselves to find great people to fill our open roles. For example, we’ve been actively hiring developers with strong backgrounds in Java-based web development. .

      One of the most powerful things about the LinkedIn platform is its search capability, although it takes many people a while to discover the power of people search. This seemed like a perfect opportunity to share some of the less obvious features of LinkedIn search, which when mastered can take your efforts to a whole new level.

      The following tips are pretty technical. However, I’m sharing them because I have found them immensely useful in the past few weeks, and hopefully some of you are interested in becoming power users of LinkedIn search.

      So, using the example of a search for Java engineers for LinkedIn, here are five tips on how to search LinkedIn like a pro:

    • The Magic of Boolean Search: OR. People use different words to describe similar concepts on their profiles. For example, a Java engineer might have “Java” on their profile. However, they might also have “J2EE” or “JSP”. LinkedIn search supports the concept of OR, which means that you can have LinkedIn return people who have any one of those terms in their profiles.

      So, in our search for a Java engineer, we might do a search for: Java OR J2EE OR JSP

      This search will return people in your network who have any one of those terms in their profile.

      With The Old Interface

      • Click Advanced next to the large white search box on your top toolbar.On the top left, choose People from the list of search options.
      • Check all four boxes in the Relationship criteria list.
      • Enter manager AND in the Title box, and select Current in the following box.
      • Type generac OR rockwell OR “sc johnson” in the Company box, and select Current in the following box.
      • Select a range of 50 miles from postal code 53202.

      There are many additional search filters available those who upgrade to the paid Sales Navigator account.

      Among some of the additional advanced filters included in a Sales Navigator account you will find:

    • Company Size Search for everything from small business owners to large multinational corporations, with from one to 10 employees to more than 10,000.
    • Years of Experience Search by the level of experience someone has.
    • Function Search by what function or role your prospect plays in their job: whether its administrative, business development, or marketing.
    • Seniority Level Search seniority levels from C-suite, VP, Director, Manager all the way down to an unpaid intern.
    • Groups Search for prospects based on what specific LinkedIn groups they are a member of. With this filter, you can view each member of a specific group.
    • Interested In Search for prospects that are interested in new opportunities, or looking for contractors, etc.

      Use Or To Find Profiles That Include One Or More Terms

      Example: Owner OR CEO

      If youre searching for a profile that may contain one of several words, you can use OR between them to search for all the words. Dont forget to capitalize OR for LinkedIn to recognize it as a search operator.

      For example, you may be searching for people with owner or CEO in their title. You can combine those two terms with quotes in LinkedIns advanced search :

      • Owner OR CEO OR chief executive officer
      • Harvard University OR Yale

      Create A Buyer Persona

      A prospect is anyone in a company, business, industry, or organization you believe needs your service, is aware of that need, and would like to take advantage of what you offer. Besides the obvious prospect , prospects can be donors for your non-profit, employers , employees , vendors, mentors, strategic partners, and others.

      To find your target prospects or leads, you need to know who they are. Whether youre using LinkedIn for lead generation or another purpose, you should create a buyer persona. If you dont yet have one, look at the people you currently work with or want to work with and visualize who they are: age, nationality, education level, and gender. Also, consider what they do, such as their title and role in their company and industry. Then make a list.

      Once you home in on the qualities of your buyer persona, you can start to look for them.

      Create your search first in Word. This will allow you to check your spelling and easily edit and adjust your search. Youll also have a copy to keep for future use.

      Once you create a search on LinkedIn, save the search link. Copy the URL from the browser and paste it into a Word document. Then when you want to repopulate that search, all you have to do is click on that link.

      LinkedIn lets free accounts save up to three searches. When you get a search result that you like, on the top right of your advanced search. The benefit is that LinkedIn will send you the new people who fall into this search every week.
