Messaging An Employee To Get Referred For A Job:

How to Connect to and Find Good Employees on LinkedIn

Hi Danny,

I saw you joined Apple two years ago. How have you enjoyed the work environment in the engineering department since moving over? Im beginning a job search myself, and Apple is one of the top companies on my list. But I always like to ask first-hand about the work environment at a company.

Then, if the person responds, you can thank them for the information they shared, exchange one or two more messages, and then ask a question like this:

After this, they may offer to introduce you or pass along your resume/CV. If not, you can send one final message

Asking directly for the introduction:

Great. Would you be willing to float my resume over to them? Im very interested in learning more about the role.

Note: These are just samples and you should adjust the wording and formality for your industry and specific situation.

Another important note: Many companies offer employees a cash bonus for referring a new person who they hire. So while you shouldnt immediately ask for a referral in your first message, its okay to do so after youve established some rapport. You might even be helping that person earn some money!

Here are some additional topics that you could ask about to start a conversation if you like this general type of approach:

Tip #1: Automate Automate Automate

If youre reaching out to hundreds of prospects every week, its impossible to manually stay on top of following up with all of them.

Thats why a sales engagement tool like Mailshake is essential to creating an effective, scalable follow-up sequence.

With Mailshake, you can personalize your emails and LinkedIn connection request messages in bulk with powerful mail merge features, schedule follow-up emails and social messages that are paused or triggered based on whether a a recipient opens an email, clicks a link, or replies, and reply to leads straight from your Mailshake dashboard with Lead Catcher.

You can also set the amount of time between follow-ups , and the days and times you want them to send .

Optimize your copy and overall outreach strategy by AB testing different subject lines, body copy, and full campaign sequences. And with native integrations to your CRM, and third party integrations to hundreds of software tools via Zapier, you can automate your outreach even further by triggering campaigns when someone downloads an eBook, books a meeting, or signs up for a demo.

If phone is a part of your outreach cadence, you can include it as a touch point in your outreach cadences as well with Mailshake Sales Engagement.

Bottom line: following up is absolutely essential to an effective outreach strategy, but theres no reason why you cant automate it.

One Thing These Linkedin Recruiter Message Templates All Have In Common They Dont Go For The Quick Win

Each LinkedIn recruiter message template weve covered here has the primary purpose of seeing if the candidate is a good fit for a role not to fill the role as quickly as possible.

If someone is pushed into a role, theyll end up in a job that doesnt fit. The candidate resigns, and you lose the trust youve built up.

Sourcing candidates in a way that encourages a good relationship before any hiring process has occurred, makes it more likely that an employee will be successful in the long run.

Ways To Use Linkedin To Your Advantage

Building relationships on LinkedIn starts with engaging other users. Post content that your network finds valuable. That can include interesting articles as well as updates on your endeavors. Stay active, but avoid clogging your connections’ feeds with overactivity aim for at least twice weekly and no more than once per day.

LinkedIn groups act as forums where you can demonstrate knowledge and connect with like-minded people. Find groups by using the site’s recommendation and search functions. Check who in your network belongs to a given group, and use current connections to build future ones.

Like a professional conference or trade convention, LinkedIn affords you valuable opportunities to make industry connections. Liking, commenting on, and sharing posts can be the beginning of a larger conversation, and you can use the rapport built online to connect in person. Meet over coffee with individual LinkedIn contacts or attend regional networking events facilitated by your groups.

Use LinkedIn’s search tool to explore companies based on industry, location, and other keywords. General company information can help you prep for interviews, but discovering who in your network is connected to that company can also help you get a foot in the door. Look to companies’ LinkedIn profiles for information on their organizational objectives, hiring practices, and current projects.

Here’s an example of a message sent to a hiring manager.

Hi Carole,

I hope you dont mind me reaching out to you through LinkedIn. Im applying for the junior graphic designer job at Go-Go Retro, and I wanted to take a minute to say hello.

Im a big fan of the company, and my skillset seems like a great fit for the role. I gained lots of hands-on experience with Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator during my internships with Blarg Tees and Green Scene. Ive included a link to my portfolio in case you want to check out my work.

Thanks for your time, and Im looking forward to learning more about the position.

Use Linkedin To Research Similarities

Ive always been told that it is interview etiquette not to connect prior to getting the job offer but I would suggest, however, that you review the LinkedIn profile of each person you will interview with, and you can see if there are any common connections to discuss during the interview. In lieu of connecting on LinkedIn with the hiring manager, I would strongly recommend writing a thank-you letter to all the people that interviewed you immediately after the interview.

Update Your Profile Regularly

Keep your information up to date for your current position and where you want to be, and keep adding to your skills and interests.

You can also post updates to talk about what youre working on for example, a project youve completed, a meeting with another company, a piece of work youre really proud of, an award youre nominated for. If these are liked, commented on or shared by your connections, more people will spot your profile.

Be Clear About Why Youre Reaching Out

How to Use Linkedin

Next, make sure your message is clear about what you want. Avoid jargon and wordy phrases and say what you really mean.

The more clear and direct you are, the more responses youll get.

For example, sometimes job seekers send me a cold message like, Will you look at my LinkedIn profile and tell me what you think?

Or, people will ask, Can we hop on a call for 15 minutes? without being clear about what exactly the purpose would be.

Thats far too general. I wouldnt know what to look for without investing a lot of time, so I usually dont respond.

Or, I receive a message saying, Hi, how are you?

If I dont know the person sending this, Im not going to reply if theres no indication of what they want. I just receive too many direct messages of this type to reply and find out what theyre aiming for, and it often leads to a lengthy conversation without any clear purpose.

However, if someone were to ask a specific, clear question like, Do you think my would be better if I removed the first paragraph? then I usually answer.

More examples of exact questions and messages you can send are coming up soon!

If you dont yet have relevant social proof to show, then include a case study in your LinkedIn prospecting message instead.

A case study shows the prospect how youve been able to help a similar company achieve their desired results in the past.

Even though not everyone who asks you to send it to them will turn into a customer, youve at least gotten your first yes from that prospect.

How To Grow Your Network On Linkedin

The core of LinkedIn is building up your âconnectionsâ â people who accept you as contacts on LinkedIn. This works much the same way as sending a friend or a follow request: you send a âconnection inviteâ, which the other person can accept or decline.

However, you might not just be able to send connection requests to everyone straight away. LinkedIn only allows you to send invites to people who it considers to already be âin your networkâ. This includes:

  • connections of connections
  • people LinkedIn suggests based on your academic or employment history
  • contacts that you import from your email address book
  • people who are in the same LinkedIn groups as you.

As you use LinkedIn, gain connections and grow your profile, more potential connections will become available to you.

See If A Mutual Connection Can Introduce You

Next, figure out if you have any connections in common with your potential buyer. Its often easier to strike up a conversation with a stranger if theres someone else who can vouch for you. So, if you have mutual friends or a former coworker in common , try asking one of your shared connections to introduce you. Your mutual connection could start a group message and share how they know each of you. After that, you can message the lead individually.

Another, more traditional approach is to simply mention your mutual connection in your first message to the lead. You can start your message by writing something like this: Hi ! I noticed you and I are both connected to and I thought I would reach out to connect with you as well. Where do you know from, anyway?

Why This Candidate Outreach Message Works

Is It OK To Connect With a Potential Employer on LinkedIn ...

A successful LinkedIn recruiter message makes it clear that you have studied the candidates profile and resume. The reason candidates fill their profile with work experience is for employers like you to read it!

However, you cant always guarantee that a candidate is a good fit just from looking at their LinkedIn profile. Thats why its important to find out about a candidates career aspirations as well as their skill set.

Introducing them to a role that aligns with their career path will intrigue them more than simply putting them into a job.The next step is getting them on a call to discuss their previous experience and their interest in the role to see if theyll be a good fit.
