Sort Your Emails Using Gmails Search Function: The Simple Version

How to Clean Out Your Gmail Inbox Fast – Gmail Hack

Now lets return to your inbox again. Our next step is to filter your emails such that only the emails youre thinking of deleting will show up.

You may have noticed that the search bar at the top of the page contains a small gray arrow at the right side of the box. If you hover your cursor over the arrow, it will say Show search options.

Simply fill in the drop-down list with your desired search terms, which youll ideally create based on the type of documents you want to delete.

For example, lets say I am interested in deleting documents which contain attachments, are larger than 6 MB in size, and are older than 6 months old.

Consequently, I would check the box that says has attachments, under size, select greater than from the first drop-down list, key in 6, and select MB from the second drop-down list, and under date, select 6 months from the drop-down list, and select todays date from the second box . As such, my completed search box will look like this:

Then all I have to do is click the big blue button depicting a magnifying glass on the bottom left, and Gmail will pull up all the emails that fit my search parameters.

Unsubscribe From Annoying Lists

Most of us get at least a few emails every day from lists we subscribed to a long time ago, but are no longer relevantor maybe we ended up on a list we never subscribed to in the first place. Theres a simple solution: unsubscribe. But most of us dont take the extra time to take ourselves off of these listsinstead, we just delete emails one at a time and roll our eyes whenever we get a new one.

Stop the cycle by using a tool to generate a list of all your current subscriptions, or use Gmails search bar to search for all emails that include the word Unsubscribe in the body. It will take some time to manually unsubscribe from all these lists, but its worth the investment.

Get Rid Of Old Emails

Gmail gives its users plenty of storage space for email and attachments, which has one downside: some users never delete their old emails, allowing them to keep piling up until they run out of available storage space and become unable to receive any new emails.

If this bad habit sounds familiar to you, the best thing you can do is stop treating old emails as precious love letters from a tragically deceased lover and simply get rid of them. If you havent had the urge to open an email for several years, the chances are that you never will, so why allow it to steal valuable email storage space from you?

This is what you should do to clean up Gmail and get rid of old emails:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Type before: and hit enter.
  • This search option tells Gmail to find all emails that were sent or received before the specified date and display them. Instead of a full date, you can also just specify the year. A good rule of thumb is to delete all emails that are older than five years without opening them first. You should also be safe to delete all emails that are older than 1 year, but caution is advised.

How To Free Up Space In Gmail

How many unread emails do you have right now? Sixty? Six thousand? Well, all of those messages and attachments take up space, whether theyre unread, old, or archived. And if youre on Gmail and arent one of those weird inbox zero people who’s constantly pruning and deleting messages, you might be running out of space.

Google gives users 15 GB of digital storage for free. That includes everything in Gmail, Google Drive, and any uncompressed images stored in Google Photos. Its a lot of free space, but when you fully invest in the Google ecosystem, it fills up quickly. Once you hit the data cap, you wont be able to add anything to Google Drive or even send and receive emails. The restrictions can come with little to no warning and leave users scrambling to free up some space. Heres how to avoid finding yourself in that position.

The simplest way to free up Gmail space is to batch-delete just about every damn thing in your inbox. Go to your Promotions tab, or maybe Social, check the box in the top left corner to select all messages, then press delete.

As for Google Drive, you can monitor your storage here. Click Storage used on the right side to filter by file size. It might also help to take a look at your folder. You never know when someone might have shared 4 GB of very important photos.
