If youre currently using LinkedIn to find a new job or may use LinkedIn to find a job in the future, read this tutorial breakdown to learn how to edit your job-seeking preferences on LinkedIn to best align with your job search.

To begin, click Me in the top right corner of your homepage.
Next, click Settings & Privacy.
On the left side bar, select Data privacy.
Under Data privacy, select Job seeking preferences.
Under job seeking preferences, you will be able to edit your job application settings, sharing your profile after clicking apply, commute preferences, and more.
To begin changing your settings, click Job application settings.
Here you will be able to save and manage your resume and answers, manage your resumes, and save Self-ID information.
To delete or download a resume saved, click the three small dots next to your resume document.
Click Delete or Download. You can also upload a resume here so its handy for future jobs you apply to!
Click Back to return back to the Job settings page.
The next setting allows you to choose whether or not you share your profile with the job poster when you apply to a job. Click the white circle to toggle yes or no.
Click back to return to your settings.
Know Your Audienceand What Keywords Will Get Their Attention
As you craft your profile, think about who will be reading itlikely other professionals and recruiters in your industry. What will those people specifically want to see in a job candidate? Are certain technical skills the most important? Or certain experiences or qualities?
To help figure out the answers to these questions, follow a similar process to the one you would when writing or tailoring your resume. Pull up a few job descriptions for the type of job you have or would like to have, Dunay says. Take a look at what they keep talking about, common themes, what seems to matter to these employers.
Write An Article For Linkedin
If youre a skilled writer, you can also self-promote your promotion by writing an article. The article doesnt have to be about being promoted it can be about your new responsibilities and in it, you can announce your promotion. Its a little tricky but it certainly can do the job for you. To do this:
Go to the Home page
In the top panel you have options to share a post or share other items as designated by the icons below, click Write Article
Follow the instructions on that page for writing your article. Then click post at the top.

Headline And Job Titles
The profile headline and recent job title are weighted heavily in LinkedIns search algorithms as well as recruiter behavior. A recruiter is likely to begin their search with specific job titles, and candidates with a matching job title in their headline and experience headings will appear higher in results.
The headline is the first major piece of information seen in search results alongside the name and profile photo. You have 220 characters to use in your , plenty of space to communicate exactly what you do, your specializations, and/or what role youre pursuing.
The next most prominent piece of information shown in search results is current and past job titles, which might be weighted more heavily in LinkedIns search algorithm than the headline.
I would argue that is your most important field, and would strongly recommend that you use the characters to its full potential, wrote Levi Lewis, a search engine expert who researched LinkedIns search functions during his own job search. Instead of project manager, I might say Project Manager, eCommerce customer experience for checkout, cart, and post-order.
Beyond adding additional information into your job title fields, the specific wording of your job titles can also be important. It is acceptable to tweak your job title to incorporate common terminology used in your industry.

Customize Your Linkedin Url
Not only do recruiters check out your LinkedIn profile when you apply, but they also Google you. And when you are Googled, you want to make sure potential employers find the best possible information about you. That means you want employers to find your LinkedIn profile before anything else. One of the fastest ways to start ranking your profile on Google for your name is to customize the URL. That customization can be as simple as linkedin.com/yourname.
Sometimes, though, it turns out that your name, John Doe, is taken. If youve got a common name and your First Name Last Name is taken, try one of these variations to create a custom, professional URL:
- Your middle name : linkedin.com/johnqdoe
- Add your job title or specialty: linkedin.com/marketerjohndoe
- Include certifications or licenses: linkedin.com/johndoecpa

Linkedin Job Tip: Let Recruiters Know Youre Open To Job Opportunities
LinkedIn is a great job search platform. If youre looking for a new job, you can let recruiters and your network on LinkedIn know youre open to new job opportunities right from your profile.
If you specify the types of job opportunities in which youre interested and your preferred location, LinkedIn will help your profile show up in search results when recruiters look for suitable job candidates.
To protect your privacy, LinkedIn takes steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users who work at your company and related companies from seeing your shared career interests, but LinkedIn cant guarantee complete privacy.
To enable the #OpenToWork feature from your desktop:
You can edit or remove the #OpenToWork feature from your LinkedIn profile at any time:
Click Im no longer open to disable the feature. You can re-enable it at any time, but your previous preferences wont be saved.
Be Mindful Of Your Profile Settings
If youre job searching, you can adjust your profile settings to let recruiters know youre open to work. And if you dont necessarily want your current employer to find out about it, you can tweak your settings further to hide this info from anyone working at the same company as you. You can also control who sees your updates, Hallow says.

Include A Current Job Entry Even When Unemployed
When recruiters search on LinkedIn, one of the pieces of information the platform uses to return results is your current positionand if you dont have one, you might not appear, Hallow says. So if you dont currently have a job, you should add the position or positions youre looking for , but add a line in the spot usually reserved for the company name that makes it clear youre not saying youre employed, like Seeking new opportunity or similar.

When updating your LinkedIn profile, make sure you connect with companies as part of your job search strategy. Follow the company and engage with their content through likes and shares. Consider joining their groups, too. While theres no guarantee it will get you hired, there is a chance it will get you noticed by a hiring manager, which may help you get your foot in the door.
Job Seekers: Be Careful Using Linkedins New Open To Work Feature
LinkedIn has released an Open to Work feature to help you let employers, recruiters and your network know you’re looking for a job. You can share your open-to-work status by checking either “share with recruiters only” or “share with all LinkedIn members.” To access, click the Add New Profile Section button to the right of your profile picture and then click Looking for a new job in the Intro section at the top.
So should you use this new feature, and if so, which option should you pick? My thoughts:
Select When you choose this option, only a small subset of recruiters on LinkedIn are notified, namely those whose organizations have paid for access to LinkedIns LinkedIn Recruiter platform. From my experience training recruiters on this platform, these recruiters do use the open-to-work field in their talent searches. And since they use this field, check this option to be found in their searches.
For those currently employed, a word of caution: LinkedIn prevents recruiters at your firm from seeing this option turned on for you, to safeguard your privacy. But thats no guarantee a recruiter at your firm wont ask a recruiter-colleague at another firm who uses LinkedIn Recruiter to look up who is open-to-work at your company .

Add A Cover Photo That Reflects You
The blank banner above your profile picture is where your cover photo goes. Its the very first thing on your page, so you want to make a good impression with it. At a minimum, you should use an inoffensive image that means something to youmaybe a landscape view of your favorite place or something that showcases your brand, Dunay says. But you can also use a picture of yourself doing your job or customize a banner with words. You can add your personal website URL, a few of your key strengths, the services you offer, or even a meaningful quote, Wasserman says. Just keep it professional.
If you want a hand designing a cover photo, Canva has free, customizable LinkedIn banner templates. You can also find free stock photos on Unsplash to use as your background or a lower effort way to get rid of the plain gray box at the top of your page.
Become An Active User
Once your profile is finished, you cant just abandon LinkedIn until the next time youre applying for a job: You need to be an active user. Thats your number one way to start seeing more success on LinkedIn, Hallow says. In the year after he started actively commenting on posts, engaging with other users, and writing content on LinkedIn, Hallow saw a 600% increase in his followers and connections and a 1,000% increase in profile views. Actively using LinkedIn will help you grow your network, be more visible to your existing network, and learn more about your role, industry, and potential opportunities.

Seek Out Strong Relevant And Recent Recommendations
Recommendations really enhance the credibility of who you are as a professional, Wasserman says. You can ask people youve worked closely with for recommendations, but be sure to give that person talking points that help shape the story you want your profile to tell, Yurovsky says. Your recommender should know what your goals are for your next career steps as well as what skills and experiences youd like them to emphasize. And keep your recommendations current. Yurovsky recommends setting a calendar reminder to secure new recommendations at least twice a year.
What Notifications Go Out
Your connections will receive notifications for nearly anything of note that you change on your profile, including changes to your job title, education, and profile picture. However, your connections will also be notified if you follow a company on LinkedIn or when you make recommendations. Thankfully, all of this sharing can be turned on and off with one simple change to your settings.
Its important to note that the following directions will not prevent connections from seeing your endorsements or your connections with other people. If youd like to keep those things private, youll need to do so separately.

Research On Labor Market Effects
In 2010, Social Science Computer Review published research by economists Ralf Caers and Vanessa Castelyns who sent an online questionnaire to 398 and 353 LinkedIn and users respectively in Belgium and found that both sites had become tools for recruiting job applicants for professional occupations as well as additional information about applicants, and that it was being used by recruiters to decide which applicants would receive interviews. In May 2017, Research Policy published an analysis of PhD holders use of LinkedIn and found that PhD holders who move into industry were more likely to have LinkedIn accounts and to have larger networks of LinkedIn connections, were more likely to use LinkedIn if they had co-authors abroad, and to have wider networks if they moved abroad after obtaining their PhD.
In July 2019, sociologists Steve McDonald, Amanda K. Damarin, Jenelle Lawhorne, and Annika Wilcox performed qualitative interviews with 61 HR recruiters in two metropolitan areas in the Southern United States and found that recruiters filling low- and general-skilled positions typically posted advertisements on online job boards while recruiters filling high-skilled or supervisor positions targeted passive candidates on LinkedIn , and concluded that this is resulting in a bifurcated winner-takes-all job market with recruiters focusing their efforts on poaching already employed high-skilled workers while active job seekers are relegated to hyper-competitive online job boards.
