There are two main approaches to connecting with recruiters on LinkedIn:
- If you have a premium LinkedIn account, you can send an InMail to people outside your network. This is the more direct approach.
- If you have a free account, you need to be connected to them to send a message. Look for the Connect button on their profile page. If you see a Follow button, click on More and look for Connect.
Always send a personalized connection request. It piques the recipients interest and acts as a quick introduction. In your message, you can say how you came to know the person. You can also touch on commonalities, like attending the same university or belonging to the same professional group.
In this regard, it makes sense to look closely at recruiters profiles. You may be able to find mutual connections or interests and create custom requests for each of them.
How to Approach Recruiters the Right Way
To put things in perspective, consider these points when approaching or messaging them on LinkedIn:
- They are busy people and receive messages from a lot of people every day.
- They get put off by a me attitude from someone they barely know.
- Also, They work for their clients, but they can work with you.
You can do better and avoid being ignored by:
- Acknowledging their time and being sincere in your correspondence
- Offering something of value instead of demanding anything from them
- Asking a mutual connection to make the introduction.
Informational Interviews Are The Key To Turning Linkedin Connections Into Referrals
A PhD-level job search is a multiple-step process where every problem is followed by another problem.
I have seen many PhDs who think that they would get hired if they could get a reply after sending a connection request. But when they get the reply, they dont know how to keep the conversation going. So, they get stuck again.
Having a process and understanding the steps of that process ahead of time will help you anticipate future problems and avoid roadblocks.
This is why I created the three-step job search referral strategy, a proprietary methodology that helps PhDs navigate the networking process from connecting with an industry professional to getting a referral.
Today, I will focus on the third step, specifically on how to jump right into an informational interview.
The key is not to let your connection know that theyre taking part in an informational interview.
You should never use the term informational interview when talking with your connections. It adds too much pressure and you want to keep the conversation casual.
Instead, ask your connection to grab a coffee, set up a 10-minute phone or video call, or even start a conversation on LinkedIn Chat, and start asking casual questions.
Below, I will give you the questions you need to ask and the order in which you should ask them to turn informational interviews into referrals.
Should You Add A Personal Note When You Connect On Linkedin
Yes, but its not always necessary. When someone considers your LinkedIn invitation, they need to know the following:
- Do I know you?
- If so, how do I know you?
- If not, whyshould I know you?
- If I shouldnt, why do you want to know me?
In many cases, a personalized note isnt necessary to answer these questions. Your name and LinkedIn headline will often provide a full answer for your co-workers, high-touch business contacts, or industry peers.

How to write a LinkedIn connection request
If youre going to write a personal note, write something useful. Dont bother sending a note that is a rewording of LinkedIns default Id like to join your LinkedIn network. For example, Hi Jon, I thought it would be a good idea if we connect! isnt an effective connection request.
Take advantage of the 300 characters available in your invitation note. Answer the questions above as best as you can and try to connect some dots by bringing up things like:
- I noticed that were both connected to Jerri Smith. I managed Jerri at ABC Corp
- Im glad we were able to meet and chat at XYZ Conferences happy hour last Thursday
How and why you found their profile
- I was searching for digital marketers in the Seattle area because
- We are both members of the LinkedIn Group Digital Marketing Seattle
- Your comment on Jerri Smiths post about integrity in marketing got me thinking

How To Message Recruiters On Linkedin
Kulaweera gets messages every day through LinkedIn, but most are short and vague. As recruiters, we get messages every day, but your message should be similar to an email and not like a WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger message, he said.
According to Kulaweera, your message should explain what skills you have, what tools you use, and what projects you have worked on. Your message must also point to the specific job posting you are referring to and its requirements. This tells the recruiter that you have done your research and know what the requirements are and how you match the requirements, he said.
When designing your message, make sure it is intentional. Are you connecting to build a relationship? Or are you reaching out because you know theres a position to be filled and you would fit that role?

What About Social Media
Posting on Facebook and LinkedIn to let your family and network know about your job search is commonplace now, but is it effective? It might work for some people, but the lack of comments on such posts suggest its not always the case:

This doesnt mean asking your network for a job is a waste of time. You just have to be selective about who you ask, and how you frame the request. Networking, after all, is a give and take process. Youre supposed to do your research and talk to the right people to collect information, which will eventually lead to job opportunities. You cant just ask for a job and expect to get one.
