Using Theme Blocks For Most Elements On A Section
Since merchants can have a wide range of layout requirements, it’s good practice to “bake in” as much flexibility and customizable options as possible when developing your theme. Section blocks allow developers to achieve this, and there may be areas of the online store where you’ll want to give very granular control over most elements of a section.
An example of one of these areas would be the product form or main product section. This is one of the most crucial areas of a storeand an area where merchants commonly need a high level of control. In fact, one of the requirements for submitting a theme to the Shopify Theme Store is that themes must support blocks for all or most elements on the main section of the Product page.
“One of the requirements for submitting a theme to the Shopify Theme Store is that themes must support blocks for all or most elements on the main section of the Product page.”
In practice, this means elements such as the product title, price, product description, vendor, and buy buttons should each be a separate block. This approach allows merchants to reposition any of these elements around the page to suit their own unique design preferences. We can see how this appears on the Dawn theme:
For example, part of a simple main product section could be written as follows:
Within the JSON template we would add the following to determine which blocks should be added by default, and the block order:
How To Organize Boards Into Sections
There are a few ways users can use sections to optimize your boards, including:
- Organizing your ideas Rather than having one board filled with a jumble of ideas, sections allow you to create sub-categories, making it much easier to navigate through and quicker to search.
- Cleaning up your boards A messy board can make it hard for your audience to find specific pins. You can use sections to make your content easier to find and draw more people to your boards.
- Planing for the holidays Be it your plans for potential holiday destinations, or just how you plan to decorate this Halloween, sections can make planning for the holidays far easier.
- Market research is hugely important for Pinterest-based businesses. Using sections can your research easier to navigate and read, making your efforts more efficient.
- Better customer experience Board split into sections are clearer, easier to understand and navigate, and offer an overall better customer experience.
- Increase social influence A well-organized board is going to drawn more people to your content and, because they can access multiple sections without leaving your board, keep them viewing for longer.
- Plan that event or party Using sections can help you organize your decor ideas, the food and drinks menu, possible venues, and even the guest list.

What Are Board Sections
Board sections are a way to create just that sections within your Pinterest boards. Once you create a board, you can divide it into sections to categorize and organize your Pinterest board content.
For example, if you have a board for Bathroom Remodeling Ideas and you find a style you love, you can organize pins by style by categorizing them into a section within that board .
Creating A New Section Method :
Now this method follows selecting pins first. And it involves creating a section for them from there on out. Its slightly different from the first one. But just as easy.
1. Follow steps 1-3 from above.
2. Tap Select.
3. Choose pins to move.
4. And hit folder.
5. Now name section > Done.
6. And wait until setting is saved.

Should You Have Personal Boards On Your Business Account
Theres some controversy about this. Some people say yes. They even recommend going into your Pinterest analytics and making boards on other interests of your audience even if theyre not your interests.
Please, dont do that. Do you really want to keep pinning to a board of things youre not interested in?
Feel free to use Audience Insights to create more boards that are relevant to your business though particularly if you have your own content to save there. Even Pinterest now tells us to focus on saving your own content.
There is a slight chance youll attract some members of your target market this way but much more likely, if you attract anyone, theyll be people who arent.
As a Pinner whos had a somewhat-business-related Pin go viral , I can tell you it caused me a huge waste of time and money.
Even though that Pin was vaguely related to my business , I probably got fewer than 5 people on my business email list from that viral Pin.
I spent a ton of time making a content upgrade for that blog post, set up an email list for it, tried to figure out a way to monetize
I did get thousands of people to sign up to that list . So that cost me plenty.
I eventually closed that list because I was wasting too much time on it, and making no money.
Now imagine if Id made a board about knitting? Which was recommended to me.
If you make baby clothes, and you suddenly came out with a line of adult hair care products, thats diluting your brand.

Why Pin Your Own Artwork
Many reasons! First, it helps your artwork be seen by even more admiring eyes online. But whats equally important is making sure the pins are done correctly, so it actually benefits your art business.
Again, adding in specific keywords to your description, such as yellow and blue abstract painting, will help your art come up in the search results when collectors are trying to find the perfect piece.
Also, when pinning your artwork yourself, you can double check to make sure the link to your website works when people click on the image of your art, which should work automatically with the Pin It button. With the right link attached to the image, people will be redirected back to your page of stunning, new pieces, so they can actually buy your artwork besides simply admiring it. Link not there? Click on the pin, hit Edit, and add in your websites link.
Want to know the best part?
Then when people come across your pin, they can repin your art to their page which will already include all of the right information and have the correct link where they can buy it. Then all their followers will be able to see it and click right through to your art business!
Write A Good Board Description
Keywords matter here too! Include phrases your target audience is searching for.
Learn more about here.
But do incorporate your keywords into those sentences! In my Google SERPs example above, you can see how the keyword phrases are picked up and highlighted.
I would shoot for at least 200 characters of description.
Should I use hashtags in my board description?
Hashtags arent helpful in your board description. are only intended for Pin descriptions.
Dont Get Clever With Your Board Names
Use your best keyword phrases! That way, interested people can find your boards via search engines .
Here you can see that my social media marketing tips board is 4th on the 2nd page of Google results.
The maximum allowed characters is 50, but they might not all show on your profile.
While its nice to have neat, tidy names that fit in the display area, its not required. Go with what best describes the board.
For example, Social Media Scheduling Tools & Tips doesnt all fit on the profile view of the board. But that tips keyword is still there for SEO purposes!
If someone should search Social Media Scheduling Tips this board would be more likely to surface due to that.
Dont concoct a name thats cute and unique. Use phrases Pinners are actually searching for!
From the top right bar, click the magnifying glass icon.
A search panel will pop up. Start typing! Take note of the phrases that appear.

Manage Your Boards With The Organize Feature
With the new board sections feature you can now organize your boards easily. After selecting a board you can click on the Organize button. New options appear at the top including: Move, Copy, Delete, Cancel, and Select All. Once you click on organize you can select more than one pin to either move to a section or a different board, copy to a section or a different board or delete the pin.
In this example I want to move two of my saved pins into my new board section on How to increase blog traffic. After selecting the pins, click on Move and the dialogue box will appear allowing you to choose your board section or a different board.
Instead of clicking on the organize button you can select an individual pin and click on the edit icon.
When you click on a new board section from your main board. It will display all of the pins in your board section. You can easily get back to the main board by clicking on the main board title, which in my case is blogging tips.
What Are Theme Blocks
Blocks are modules of content that can be added, removed, and reordered within a section. This allows merchants to have granular control over the look and feel of every aspect of their online store. Each section can have a maximum of 16 blocks per section.
A range of different types of blocks can be added to sections, and the positions of these blocks can be changed, all from the theme editor. A block could be an image, a video, custom text, or any of the input setting types options outlined in our developer documentation.
Its important to have a clear vision and purpose for each section when deciding what types of blocks to implement, so that your theme is intuitive to use and prevents merchants from negatively impacting the layout of their store. An option to add a newsletter signup block might not be suitable in a featured product section, for example, but an option to add a custom text block could be useful in this context.
“Its important to have a clear vision and purpose for each section when deciding what types of blocks to implement, so that your theme is intuitive to use and prevents merchants from negatively impacting the layout of their store.”
When building Shopify themes, you can define which elements of a page can be blocks, and set up rules to determine how each block appears and what settings a block could contain. Later in this article we’ll look at the benefits of turning almost all elements of a section into a block.
