How To Add Groups On Linkedin

Don't Miss

How Many Groups Can You Join On Linkedin

Creating Your First LinkedIn Group

As a member, you can join a maximum of 100 LinkedIn group pages. If you are the creator of the groups, you can own no more than 10 groups. For some groups, you will need to have approval from an admin before you can start interacting.;

Balance the use of targeted keywords with a name that resonates with your intended audience, stands out, and accurately describes your groups purpose.

Start Discussions And Be Active

This step and the next are the most crucial ones, which will influence how well your LinkedIn Group becomes. You ready?

Once youve created your LinkedIn Group and invited your connections, your group would likely still feel very empty. Members might not post anything if there arent any posts in the group .

I would recommend creating a Welcome post as the groups first post, where you welcome new members, share what the group is about, and gently remind members to check the group rules.

Then, feature that post so that it stays at the top of the group feed for all new members to read. You can feature a post by clicking on the three dots in the upper-right corner of the post and selecting Feature. Heres an example of how a featured post looks like:

The next thing to do is to start some discussions in the group. This serves two purposes:

  • It helps get conversations going in the group, and
  • It signals to your group members the type of posts that are appropriate and encouraged.
  • The question-and-answer format seems to be the best way to start valuable conversations in LinkedIn Groups. According to Inc., James McDonald, who started several years back, posted a question every day and let his members respond to it3

Besides starting discussions, youll also want to participate in relevant discussions by commenting or liking. This will encourage your members to post more and, again, let them know the type of discussions that are recommended the group.

Invite Linkedin Group Members From Groups That You Belong To

There are many Groups that you can easily search for and join on LinkedIn. Although I was initially intimidated to join a group, it is a very easy process and I dont think I have been refused entry to a group so far, although there are some that will ask you to register on their websites or provide them your email address.

Joining a group is easy and benefits you in that you can now search within your group as part of an Advanced Search and see people that may not already be part of your extended network.

As for inviting people from within a group, make sure that you check their profile, and if they say nothing about being open to connecting, make sure that you have a minimal number of mutual connections with them. I would start with a minimum number of 5 mutual connections but raise that as you increase your number of connections and thus potential mutual connections with others you dont know.

If the above conditions arent met, do not risk yourself by inviting them. I made the mistake early on of inviting someone just because they were the member of the same group. BIG MISTAKE. One IDK later I came to the conclusion that just because you think that someone in your group would welcome an invite from their fellow group member doesnt mean that they think the same.

How Do Linkedin Groups Differ From Facebook Groups

LinkedIn groups differ from in the ways people interact. In LinkedIn groups, people are there to network and tend to show a higher level of professionalism and etiquette. In Facebook groups, People are there to interact and you tend to see high levels of engagement. However, Facebook groups arent generally filled with people interested in networking and building a brand. Theyre filled with people who want to express opinions about the topic of the group, and that can sometimes mean high levels of negativity.

    Managing Your Linkedin Group

4 Steps to Create Your LinkedIn Group

Once you have created a LinkedIn group, there are a number of management tasks you will need to perform for your group as an admin. Some will need to be done regularly, while others will be done on an as needed basis.

LinkedIn group management tasks to be completed at least once a week

The two management tasks that will need to be done regularly, ideally multiple times a week, are to review any new content or engagement for spam and to accept new requests to join the group.

Each time you visit the group, scroll through the feed looking for and removing any content or engagement that isnt of value to the group. This may not always look like spam. But anything that isnt on topic for the group or that the group will not find of interest or value is spam.

You can also post your own content at this time and engage as appropriate with other posts and comments.

To remove a post, recommend a post to the group, or block the group member who posted it, simply click the three dots in the top right corner, and select the appropriate action.

You can easily manage any requests to join your group by clicking the blue Manage group button, located below your name in the top left corner of the page.

This will open the member list. Click on Requested, located in the navigation box on the left to go to the page where you can accept or deny new requests to join the group.

Visit the profiles of people requesting to join your group to ensure they meet your membership criteria.

My Short Answer Is Yes And Heres Why

LinkedIn Groups are virtual meeting rooms where people with similar interests can post and hold conversations around topics they want to share or learn more about.

Participating in Groups allows you to show off your expertise around a subject and start to grow relationships with like-minded people.

Many of these people may;be colleagues, who could offer solutions to certain challenges youve been facing, or could provide partnership opportunities to help you grow your business in the future.

Others could be potential customers, who are using groups to network and also find solutions of their own.

    Contribute To The Group

Once you join a group it is important to contribute your voice to the group. This can mean sharing valuable content that is relevant and helpful to the audiences within that group. Also, sharing your thoughts by commenting on posts shared by other individuals. Being involved in discussions happening in the group. Providing solutions to any problems people may be facing. When you are active in the group, other members notice your business.

Sharing your own content will help you increase brand awareness. If you share your blogs, users will visit your website and engage more with your content. This can ultimately lead to conversions. It also allows people to see you as an industry expert and they feel comfortable investing in your products or service. Ensure that you do not share content that advertises your products or services.; The main aim is to educate your audience.

Promote Your Group On Other Social Media Platforms

Theres not much to say here.

If youve already built up a hefty following on other social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, you shouldnt be afraid to promote your LinkedIn group there, too.

Chances are good that;the people who are engaging with you on these platforms are going to like what youre talking about in your social network groups.

Promoting their group on other social media platforms helped Dell to grow their group to over 8,000 members.

Even if youre just starting out on the other social media platforms, you can still promote your LinkedIn group there.

    Whenever youre promoting your group, always make an effort to emphasize the benefits of joining.;

Moderate All Posts And Remove Spam

How to Find and Join LinkedIn Groups

This next step is just as important as the previous. Once your members become active , itll be crucial to moderate the posts in your LinkedIn Group. My hunch is that most LinkedIn Groups fail because of a lack of moderation.

According to LinkedIn, Spam is the top reason people leave groups and, if I may add, the top reason people become inactive in groups4

. Spam in LinkedIn Groups is usually in the form of links. So I would recommend being quite sensitive to members sharing links in your LinkedIn Group, and deleting the post or removing the member.

To remove a post or comment in your LinkedIn Group, click on the three dots in the upper-right corner of the post or by the comment and select Delete.

To help you reduce spam, LinkedIn also has an auto-moderation system that would flag promotional content. You could also encourage your members to flag posts that are not appropriate for the group. Then you can head to your group management page to moderate the posts under the sections, Moderation Queue and Classifier Queue.

Heres a little heads up: building an engaged community can take some time and effort. Youll likely have to repeat step five and six for quite some time so dont be disheartened if your group isnt very active after the first month or two.

    Reach Out To Potential Buyers

One of the best advantages of a LinkedIn group is that it can be used as a lead generation tool. You can create a list of individuals that could potentially become buyers. You can use filters on these groups to sort out individuals based on their job title, location, company and more. Get to know their interests and pain points.

Add these prospects to your connections. Based on what interests them, share personalized messages to start communicating with them. Ensure that you have been active in the group and your is fully optimized. This helps the prospects trust your brand and encourages them to communicate with you.

Decide If You Want It To Be Searchable Or Unlisted

LinkedIn groups have two privacy settings: listed and unlisted.

Listed groups are visible in the search results. Members can also invite other members to join.

An unlisted group does not appear in LinkedIns search results, and only group admins can invite members to join.

You will generally want to select a listed group.

The only instances when you will want an unlisted group is if you require the information about and access to the group to be restricted to a very select group of people. A members only unlisted group is great for having an internal company group for employees, organization members, private client group or anything specific to a small number of people.

Invite Business And Personal Contacts From Your Email Database

3 Ways to Leave a Group on Linkedin

This is the way that new people generally get invited in to the LinkedIn network.

LinkedIn will conveniently check your digital address books and allow you to see who from your database is on LinkedIn and then automatically generate an invitation with one easy push of the button.

I caution you here not to just invite anyone and everyone that shows up on these lists.

You may have emailed a bunch of companies asking for a quote on some home improvement project, for instance, and these people will show up heredo you really want to invite the guy whos business you turned down?

You could have an Outlook contact of someone who is now working at your competitiondo you want him to be part of your network?

You really need to go through the results here carefully and only keep the checks on those people that:

  • are on LinkedIn and 2
  • you feel will add value to your network.
  • One final note here is that I recommend you DO NOT invite anyone who is not currently a member of LinkedIn. We all find out the hard way, but LinkedIn places an initial limit on the number of invitations that can be sent out to 3,000. Thats definitely a lot of invitations that will take you time to burn through, but you will burn through them as you navigate through the members of this;700+ million strong community;and build your network.

    How To Find More Members

When you search for groups to join on LinkedIn, you see both their names and their membership numbers and if you get stuck at two or three, your group isnt exactly going to give off that were super credible and engaging vibe.

At the same time, though, membership numbers are more than a vanity metric! Artificially inflating your stats by populating your group with bots or paid members, for example, doesnt mean its going to be a hub of useful conversation.

Put in a little legwork to attract the right people:

    • Send personal invites: Personally invite connections, colleagues, and industry influencers that would be a solid addition to the club.
    • Get the word out: Tell your email subscribers and social media followers about your group. If they like what youre dishin on other channels, theyll jump at the opportunity to hang on another platform.
    • Feature your group: You can feature up to three groups on your company page, so include yours. Itll also show on the profiles of people who join, so encourage your coworkers to hop in, too!
    • Ask for referrals: Encourage members to invite their friends!
    • Participate in other discussions: Become an active member of other groups. If people like what youre saying, theyll check you out, and find the one you created!

Optimize Your About This Group Section

The About this group section is where you can define the culture and purpose of the group. Be sure to take advantage of the maximum 2,000-character limit.

Remember that you are trying to entice potential members, so speak to your ideal target audience using the language they will use when searching. Expand on why you created the group and who will benefit from joining.

Give people a good idea of the content they can expect from the group.

Optimize your LinkedIn group for the search results

If you are going to create a LinkedIn group, you want potential members to be able to find it. This means optimizing your group for LinkedIns Advanced Search.

Keep in mind that when someone searches for groups on LinkedIn, only the first 200 or so characters of the About section will be visible beside your group name in the search results.

Because you have only a sentence or two to capture a potential members attention and entice them to join your group, you need to focus on these key details when writing this first part of the About this group section:

    • if youd like to attract a specific industry or profession, mention it here
    • write a brief sentence about what users can expect and what value they can expect to gain by joining your LinkedIn group
    • use specific keywords that will grab your target audiences attention

Completely Fill Out Your Work Profile

    Joining LinkedIn Groups

This goes hand-in-hand with actively finding people as LinkedIn is about finding and being found. I recommend including every job that you would put on your resume, including early positions you held just after graduating from school. The content is not as important as just putting the company name and years you worked there. That is enough to be found.
