Whether you are or have been an employee of a well-known brand, or youre working to build the brand of your new SME, adding your organisations logo to your LinkedIn profile helps to reinforce brand recognition and consistency, helps your profile stand out from the crowd and makes sure you avoid the obligatory blank grey box when no company logo is available.

So how do you make this happen? Well, firstly your company needs to have a LinkedIn company page and the logo image needs to be uploaded to it. Creating a company page is free and very easy to do. Its also another great place for posting news and info about the organization and content that will be useful/of interest to your target audience. To set up a company page click on the Work icon top right of your menu bar and select Create a Company page from the drop down menu.

Once you have a company page and logo added, go back to your profile and click on the blue pen top right of the relevant job description. In the edit screen, delete the company name from the company box and then retype it in slowly and select the correct name from the drop-down list that will appear. And viola! Your company logo will now appear alongside your job title.

Make Your Picture Visible To Everyone

Once youve added a professional looking headshot that reinforces the brand message you want to convey, make sure everyone can see it by making your picture visible to everyone, not just to your connections or your network.

To do this go to your LinkedIn profile and click on the blue pen top right of the photo/intro section. Then click on the small blue pen next to your photo and then on the eye Visibility icon, bottom right of your profile photo edit screen. From the drop down select Public. See below.

This will make your profile photo visible not just to everyone on LinkedIn but also to those who find you via search engines and either dont have a LinkedIn account or are not logged into it when they search for you.

Before You Make Any Changes

BEFORE you make any changes to your Experience section, you may want to turn your notifications setting to OFF so your network is not notified of this change especially if it isnt a real change of company, just adding the link. Remember to turn them back ON when done!

To do this, go to your HOME screen. In the upper right, next to the circle with your photo there is a small arrow. Click on that to see the drop down menu. Click on Settings & Privacy.

Once you are on that page, go to the Visibility tab and scroll down til you see the Share profile updates with your network.

To the right, you will have the option to Change this from Yes to No.

Write A Compelling About Us Section And Include Relevant Keywords

Carefully selected images will hook a prospect, but it takes words to reel them in.

A well-optimized About Us section on your Company Page is a tightly worded paragraph telling visitors everything they need to know about your company. Use simple, accessible language informed by keyword research to outline your business goals in words anyone will understand.

Ultimately, you want your About Us section to tell your company story and help people see the value of your product or service.

Like your other social profiles, the About Us on your Company Page should answer six basic questions .

  • Who are you?
  • What is your brand voice?
  • How can people contact you to learn more?

    Company Pages Formed By Quorum

Another surprise: if enough people key in some “new” company name the same way, LinkedIn will automatically generate a company page with minimal information, such that clicking on the ghost logo on someone’s experience will link over to it. This could be the case with the Coca-Cola Services company discussed above.

Why would LinkedIn allow whatever a member types for their Company to be accepted? Two reasons:

    • I call it crowd sourcing. Every company entered by a member, where LinkedIn has not heard of it before, represents a new chance to monetize — to sell that company owner a premium membership with the ability to list job openings and other business-promoting features.
    • LinkedIn gets to stay out of the company-cataloging and employment verification businesses. They depend on the integrity of their members to correctly identify the organizations they work for. The burden is fully on each LinkedIn member to give accurate employment information.

Linkedin: The Largest Professional Network In The World

LinkedIn was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman and ten other co-founders, several of whom belong to the so-called PayPal Mafia as does Hoffman.

What is Paypal Mafia? Its a group of former PayPal employees who went on to start their own successful companies:

Probably the most famous PayPal alum is Elon Musk, known as being the crazy genius behind Tesla and SpaceX. But there are quite a few other former PayPal employees who have done very well for themselves. In fact, six of them, including Reid Hoffman, became billionaires.

This is an important detail of LinkedIn history because the all-star founding team and their Silicon Valley connections undoubtedly played a huge role in the companys success.

In 2003, LinkedIn raised a series A Investment round which was led by Sequoia Capital, a venture capital company known for their investment in numerous unicorns such as Google, Apple, PayPal, YouTube, WhatsApp, and more.

And the LinkedIn team did not disappoint. In 2004, the company reached 1 million users, in 2006 it had its first profitable month, and in 2007 it hit 10 million users.

In 2008, after several venture capital companies purchased a 5% stake in LinkedIn for $53 million, the company was valued at $1 billion .

In 2010, it was valued at around $2 billion, though by the end of the year its value dropped to around $1.5 billion. That same year it was ranked No.10 on Silicon Valley Insiders Top 100 list of most valuable startups.
