How Much Nigeria Lost Economically after 7 Months of Twitter Ban

The social media company reported Wednesday that it lost 2 million users in the last three months of 2015. Shares plummeted as much as 12% in after-hours trading.

Twitter had 305 millionactive users by the end of 2015. By contrast, Facebook has 1.6 billion. Google has eight products with over 1 billion users each. Even Instagram surpassed Twitter in September, growing to 400 million users.

Though Twitter has been able to effectively generate sales from sponsored tweets and partnerships, it’s growing at a snail’s pace. It’s still a relatively niche product that hasn’t been able to expand its reach the way that its rivals have.

New management, products, designs and features haven’t done much to move the needle. Twitter’s growth has stagnated, and it’s nowhere close to turning a profit.

Twitter is aware of the problem and has launched a slew of new products to address the issue. Notably, Twitter announced Wednesday that it is testing a new algorithm that will change the chronological order of feeds, hoping to appeal more to casual users who aren’t obsessively keeping up with thousands of tweets in real time.

On a Periscope chat with analysts, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said its new timeline feature has shown “real promising growth” in user engagement.

“We’re going to refine our core service and make everything more intuitive,” Dorsey said. “There’s an opportunity to fix broken windows and confusing aspects that are inhibiting growth. We think timeline is a big part of that.”

Twitter Loses Ad Revenue Despite Gaining 2 Million Users And Trump ‘boost’

Investors take fright as company reveals $457m loss for 2016 and concedes its financial growth is lagging its popularity

Jack Dorsey, chief executive and co-founder, hailed the growing impact and influence of Twitter, saying the US president had boosted the power of the service.

But investors took fright as the loss-making company conceded that its financial growth was lagging behind its increasing popularity among users and would continue to do so in the near future.

The San Francisco-based company reported annual revenues up 14% on last year to $2.5bn . Monthly active users climbed from 317 million to 319 million in the final quarter of last year.

While trumpeted an increase in users and time spent on the site, revenues increased by less than analysts had forecast.

The tech company is still making sizeable losses, falling $457m into the red during 2016 despite cutting 9% of its workforce, or about 350 people. Its shares fell by more than 11% to $16.54 in early trading on Wall Street after the disappointing set of figures were revealed.

Twitter has now racked up losses of almost $2.8bn since it floated on the stock market three years ago at $26 a share and the latest figures deal a blow to the companys plan to turn a profit by the end of 2017.

Even as Buharis aides return with welcome back tweets, Nigerians are either ignoring the Twitter ban or reminding everyone that it was a wrong move in the first place.

Amnesty International insists it was illegal and an attack on the right to freedom of expression.

But Nigerias government said the shared national sacrifice produced immeasurable gains, like extracting revenue from Twitters operations, and reducing cybercrime. The merits of such arguments are open to debate. For now though, lifting the ban means more Nigerians can freely join online conversations around events like the Africa Cup of Nations and, more importantly, the campaign season ahead of the 2023 presidential elections.

Eu Foreign Policy Chief: Russia Attack Is One Of Darkest Hours For Europe Since World War Ii

Fear Of Sagging Engagement

The near-term fear is that because Donald Trump is such a prominent figure on Twitter, the platform may see a large chunk of engagement disappear with him.

The Trump Twitter ban may lead to fewer users, as one of the platforms largest speakers is removed, says Georgetown internet law professor Anupam Chander in an email. Some users have already tried to migrate to Parler, for example, though that has proven to be a dead end.

Not only did Trump tweet constantly, but his tweets were almost always some form of dog whistle to his base. They were often widely shared and frequently went viral. His tweets also reached beyond the platform as they were often discussed on TV news and on other websites.

One thing on Twitter investors minds right now is how the platform will continue to grow. Losing its 6th most popular account is a step in the wrong direction.

Creative Strategies analyst Ben Bajarin adds that investors might just be registering the reality that Trump will soon no longer be president, and that Twitters engagement numbers may have gone down anyway.

The Most Popular Content On Twitter With The Highest Engagement

Twitter supports various forms of media, including images, text, GIFs, and video. By looking at video marketing statistics, it would be safe to claim that videos will soon take over online content marketing.

Video views on Twitter increased 62% from 2019 to 2020, with a 72% year-over-year increase in watch time . This shows how consumers have become more interested in video content on the platform.

, tweets with videos are 6x more likely to be Retweeted than Tweets with photos and 3x more than Tweets with GIFs.

Twitter Tumbles As Trump Ban Puts Social Media In Spotlight

By Ambar Warrick, Sruthi Shankar

3 Min Read

– Twitter Incs stock tumbled over 6% on Monday after its move to permanently suspend U.S. President Donald Trumps widely-followed account spurred concern among investors over the future regulation of social networks.

The San Francisco-based social media company said on Friday its suspension of Trumps account, which had 88 million followers, was due to the risk of further violence following the storming of the U.S. Capitol last week.

The move drew criticism from some Republicans for quelling the presidents right to free speech, while European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton said the past weeks events likely heralded a new era of heavier official control.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose relations with Trump have been frosty, criticized Twitters ban and warned through a spokesman that legislators, not private companies, should decide on potential curbs to free expression.

The attention drawn to Twitter increased investors worries that it could be more exposed to regulation than its bigger rivals Facebook Inc or Google and YouTube-owner Alphabet.

Other social media platforms, including Facebook, have issued similar bans on Trump, but Mondays fall of as much as 12% in Twitters stock was much deeper than for any of its peers. Facebook was last down almost 4% and Alphabet lost 2%.

Is There Any Good News From Twitter

Well, it also announced a couple of new things that could help the platform.

Its content will be more closely integrated with Google search, and it is working with Apple so tweeted content will also appear more prominently in Spotlight searches on iOS and OS X devices.

It is also planning to curate timelines for users so, at least in theory, the more relevant tweets from people they follow will bubble up to the top of their feeds.

What Actually Happened

Twitter was due to announce its earnings for the first quarter of the year after close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, where the company is listed.

Announcing results after the markets close gives investors a chance to digest the news, sleep on it, and then start trading again the next day.

Except it turns out that somebody thought it would be a good idea to release this information early, on the technology-led Nasdaq-run investor relations page for Twitter.

Initially it seemed no-one really noticed the error, until a well-placed tweet highlighted the mistake and revealed Twitter’s disappointing results.

The markets were still trading, and Twitter had not had the chance to formally present its results in a statement that would have bathed them in a more flattering light.

How Likely Is It

Throughout the Cold War, nuclear conflict was prevented by mutually assured destruction, the principle that if one country fired a nuke and the other retaliated then both would be destroyed.

Most experts predict that nuclear war would never happen, due to the enormous potential cost.

These are not normal circumstances however, said Jon Wolfsthal, former National Security Council official. And the greatest risk of the use of a nuclear weapon comes from a smaller conflict escalating quickly in the fog of war.

“When countries are using cyber-attacks, when theyre trying to degrade each others conventional capabilities, which also support nuclear capabilities.

Conservatives Are Upset They Are Losing Followers On Twitter

Their anger comes after Twitter announced the suspension of thousands of QAnon accounts.

Rep. Matt Gaetz wants you to know that he used to have way more followers.

The Florida man spent the weekend live-tweeting his dropping follower count. On Saturday morning, he had 892,000 followers. By the end of the day, he was down to 842,000. As of writing, hes at 835,300. I wish I could lose weight as fast as Im losing followers during this Twitter purge…. bemoaned Gaetz.

Hes not the only one concerned about their precipitous drop in followers. Mike Pompeo posted an image of the recent changes in follower counts of several prominent politicians. All of the Republicans had lost followers while all of the Democrats had gained new ones. This is how you create an echo chamber Sec. Pompeo tweeted. In response, Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted that she has lost 50,000 followers this week. According to social media analytics firm Socialblade, shes actually lost closer to 70,000, all since Thursday. Before that, she was steadily gaining followers.

What could have possibly happened this week that is causing some of President Trumps most ardent supporters to lose followers? Perhaps the storming of the capitol by a mob of Trump supporters has something to do with it. That insurrection led to the loss of at least one follower for Gaetz and Sanders Donald J. Trump. On Friday, Twitter permanently suspended the outgoing presidents account.

Russia had not taken any of its major objectives in the first 24 hours of its invasion of Ukraine and has lost more than 450 personnel, according to the UK’s defence secretary.

Ben Wallace told Sky News it was the UK government’s view that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends “to invade the whole of Ukraine”.

But he said Russia was “behind its hoped-for timetable” in the military action against its neighbour.

“Our assessment, as of this morning, is that Russia has not taken any of its major objectives,” the defence secretary said.

“In fact it’s behind its hoped-for timetable. They’ve lost over 450 personnel.

“One of the significant airports they were trying to capture with their elite spetsnaz has failed to be taken and, in fact, the Ukrainians have taken it back.

“So I think, contrary to great Russian claims and indeed President Putin’s vision that somehow the Ukrainians would be liberated and would be flocking to his cause, he’s got that completely wrong.

“And the Russian army has failed to deliver on day one its main objective.”
