How Much Data Is Consumed By Videos

How to check data usage on whatsapp (And prevent it using too much data)

How much data does WhatsApp video use? Sending and receiving video calls consume even more data than regular voice calls.

A test was conducted to determine how much data is consumed in using WhatsApp videos. Here are the results of said tests:

  • Video calls taking about four minutes were made in three separate apps, including WhatsApp
  • Apples FaceTime consumed the least amount of data, only about 8.8MB for the 4-minute video call
  • Skype used about 12.3 on average. WhatsApp consumed the most data, at an average of 12.74MB
  • During 10-minute video calls, it was revealed that on 4G, excess data consumption has a charge rate of $10.70 per GB
  • For unlimited usage, the maximum cap is pegged at $188 per month and
  • If you are charged $10.70 per GB, you are practically paying $0.01 per MB. That means, for the average 10-minute WhatsApp video call, your data charge is about five cents per 5MB.
  • Does WhatsApp use data? WhatsApp uses data. If your phone is not connected to Wi-Fi, it will use the data allowed in your phone plan.

How much data does WhatsApp use? Around 0.1MB of 3G data is consumed when you make a call for one minute. A 1-minute video call will cost you about 5MB of mobile data.

How Much Data Does It Take To Stream A Movie

The amount of data used to stream a movie will depend on the length of the film and how high you want the picture quality to be. Netflix say that viewing in High Definition uses 3GB per hour, while Standard Definition uses 0.7GB per hour.

With some modern films lasting as long as two and a half hours that means, even at SD, it would take over 2GB of data to watch the whole movie.

Don’t forget though, if you’re using Netflix or iTunes, you can always download a movie or an episode on Wi-Fi to watch later – this won’t count towards your monthly mobile data usage.

How To Reduce Whatsapp Call Data Usage

Note that these steps will also apply to Whatsapp voice calls, meaning youll be able to save data on those as well. Open the app on your device and follow the steps mentioned below to reduce data usage during Whatsapp video calls.

    • Open Whatsapp and tap on the three vertical dots in the top right.
    • Tap on Settings.
    • Head over to Storage and data.
    • Enable the Use less data for calls slider.

You can also consider turning off mobile data or downloading Whatsapp media only over WiFi to save more data.

How Can I Check How Much Data I’m Using Right Now

Checking exactly how much data you’re getting through is easy. All you need to do is log in to your account on your computer by visiting your network’s website.

Or if you’re with one of the larger networks, you can log in to your network’s customer account app on your phone.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to see how much data you’ve used so far this month, as well as in previous months.

If you’re often left with lots of unused data, youre probably paying for a data allowance that’s too generous for your needs.

Accessing your account on your computer is just a case of visiting your network’s website and logging in. Then simply navigate to the section of the app that covers your data allowance.

However, using an app to check your data usage isn’t quite so simple. That’s because networks don’t usually pre-install their customer account apps on phones at the point of purchase, so you may need to download the app first.

Handily, here are links from major network where you can get their customer-account apps:

How to Know How Many Megabytes WhatsApp Uses

WhatsApp automatically makes a daily backup of your chats and media, which it stores as a file on your phone.

This essentially lets you retrieve your recent conversation history and contents when you switch phones or re-install the app.

It’s a super handy feature, but it can be optimised to save you data.

There are two ways WhatsApp completes this process: over Wi-Fi or via Wi-Fi and cellular.

You want the first option only.

To enable it, just head into Settings, tap Chats, and select Chat backup.

Near the bottom, you should see the “Back up over” option.

Hit it and then make sure “Wi-Fi” is checked.

You’ll also want to exclude bulky videos from your backups.

So, in the same Chat backups menu, make sure the “Include videos” box is also unchecked.

How Much Is 4gb Of Data

With 4GB of data youre approaching the lower mid-range of data use. Web browsing, social media and email should be nothing to worry about unless youre using mobile data much of the day, as you could web browse for up to around 3 hours daily on average, or use social media apps for at least half that.

    Recommended deal

If youre happy with just around 40 minutes of daily browsing you could also stream around 2 hours of music each day, striking a nice balance between the two. Or you could cut the music and stream a few movies on low or medium video quality. If youre a binge-watcher though this still wont cut it.

    4GB data sample monthly usage:

    • 3 hours daily of web browsing
    • Or at least 90 minutes of daily social media
    • Or 40 mins of browsing and 2 hours of music daily
    • Or 40 mins of browsing daily and a few films each month

Whatsapp Call Data Usage Per Minute Data Obtained In Our Tests

If the quality of the calls is not the same, the data consumption cannot be the same either. With that clear premise, we venture to certify that the consumption, the expense of calls via WhatsApp depends on what type of network both partners are connected to.

For this we have used two Android terminals, forcing them to connect to different networks to check if our premise was true.

After repeatedly repeating the same tests this is the average consumption of the calls we have made according to the network to which we were connected:

    TYPE OF NETWORK
    4G 1 MB

The first thing we have found is that the data consumption depends on the worst connection of both sides of the communication.

If one of the users is in a 4G network but the other is in an EDGE network, the consumption, and the quality of the call, is the same as if both users were connected to an EDGE network.

We have also verified that the calls we have made, two minutes long, we have to discount the consumption of data that is done while the call is established, or what is the same, what we would spend if the other side did not catch us the call.

As we have been able to check the data consumption of the call establishment if it is between 10-20 KB, almost negligible.

Finally, before establishing consumption per minute we also have to take into account how talkative both parties are to the call.

How Much Data Does A Facebook Messenger Video Call Use

A Facebook Messenger call can be one of the most convenient ways to reach your Facebook contacts. Data usage for an hour of calls is approximately 260mb. Again, it is important to take measures to reduce your data usage during Facebook Messenger calls by making sure that you are on a wifi connection where possible.

What Are The Types Of Mobile Networks

How much data does a WhatsApp video call use?

Speaking about network speeds or a mobile network, we often hear the terms 3G, 4G, or 5G.

These are the various network speeds supported by smartphones.

Youre probably wondering what the G stands for.

Its not GigaHertz , as some would believe.

    Its actually generation.

So, the first mobile network connected to smartphones was the 3G network, i.e., the 3rd generation network.

The predecessor of the 3G network was the EDGE network.

EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution.

You probably remember when we had that E sign next to the bars on our phone.

Well, thats the EDGE sign we could notice in the notification bar of our Android phones.

The major difference between the three generations is their latency.

Latency is the reaction time between the sending and the reception of data.

For example, when you press a button on your TV remote, you almost immediately change the channel or volume.

Internet connectionsespecially the older onesdont react so quickly.

5G promises significant changes in this department, so people can almost instantly control very remote devices.

So, when we click a button or touch something on our smartphone in Japan, the air conditioning at our apartment in Germany will turn on immediately.

Also, the speed between these network generations varies.

The 4G network allows us to stream videos and movies.

The 3G network is good for browsing, although it is significantly slower than 4G, and 5G can be up to 10 times faster than 4G.

What Is A Fair Use Policy

Some mobile networks simply limit your internet usage rather than charge extra when you exceed the data you’ve paid for. This is called a ‘fair use’ policy.

It means that you may not incur an extra charge when you use up your monthly allowance, but you may be penalised if you go over by what the network decides is ‘fair’- often around 500MB.

But that’s not all. Some networks that favour fair usage policies will reduce your internet speed until your monthly allowance renews, so you will not be able to stream long videos or download large applications.

Its worth contacting your network and asking them to explain this policy fully. That way you can either change deals or at least get to grips with how much data youre using each month and work out how to moderate it.

How Much Data Does Whatsapp Use When You See And Upload Status

The newest feature on WhatsApp that success entertains many people is a WhatsApp Status. You can see other activities and tell someone else what you are doing from there. But it can consume a lot of internet data without you realizing it. Above all, you can have a lot of fun while seeing other peoples activities from there.

The data you should spend depends on how much you see and upload status. You should spend more data while uploading or seeing the videos there. It is just like you sending and receiving all of these files from a lot of people. So, better for you to choose which one you want to see and not if you want to save the internet data.

These are some factors that you need to know that also affect how much data does WhatsApp use. You should be careful while enjoying many features there. Because if you are not, your data will be gone too fast so you should buy it again. Dont be too consumptive or be ready to spend more money to use this free application!

How To Find Out How Much Whatsapp Calls Cost You

While our test figures may give you an idea of how much WhatsApp voice calls cost us, it’s much better if you conduct your own test to find out how much they cost you. Each data plan is different, network speeds are different and so on. So you can easily replicate our test and get your own cost analysis. Of course, data charges apply whether you are making or receiving WhatsApp voice calls.

    1. First, you’re going to want to test your network speed. Install Ookla Speed Test on your smartphone and run a few tests at different times of day, both indoors and outdoors to get an average of your connection speeds. Of course, you want to be testing your phone data rates, not your Wi-Fi speeds.

*To give you an idea, these are the maximum bit rates for various network speeds in widespread use today:

    2. Next, install an app to measure the data volumes of individual apps. We used Data Monitor but you can pick any that you like the looks of.

    3. Now you need to make a series of test calls. Theoretically they should be as identical as possible, but duration is the main thing. Of course if you make calls primarily on your data connection in a couple of particular places, they would be the best places to conduct your test calls for better real-world results.

    4. Each time you place a call, check your data monitoring app and record the results.

How Can I See How Much Data I’m Using

WhatsApp requires an internet connection to send and receive messages. If youre connected to wi-fi this isnt a problem, but when youre out and about, the app uses your mobile data connection. Because of this, it could easily eat through your data allowance.

To keep track of your usage, go to Settings, then Storage and data followed by Network Usage. You can also adjust whether images, voice clips, videos and documents can be downloaded when you have both connections or only via wi-fi in the previous menu. If you use WhatsApp to make calls, you can reduce the amount of data this function uses by turning on the option to Use less data for calls.

    Stop Whatsapp From Auto

Have a peek at the WhatsApp album in your smartphone’s photo gallery to check how many pics and videos the app has downloaded from your chats.

If it’s a lot, you’re probably due a clean-up. Just delete the ones you don’t want to free up some storage.

But if you want to ensure that the app doesn’t keep zapping your data, you’ll have to put a stop to those downloads altogether.

To do this, open WhatsApp and tap the menu icon at the top left, and select Settings.

Then select Data and Storage Usage.

Here you’ll see a Media auto-download section with three options.

Tap the first one: “When using mobile data”, and untick all the media types to stop them from auto-downloading.

Note that the files will still download when you connect to Wi-Fi, which is the ideal option for those wishing to save data.

And you’ll still be able to manually download them using your mobile data by tapping them in a chat.
