  • Why Pins Stock Lost Momentum

Pinterests management told investors that US MAU growth started to slow down in mid-March as people naturally took advantage of vaccines and spent less time online. Management acknowledged:

In Q1, we saw good retention of the MAUs we gained during 2020, but we still dont know if or how long this retention will last. Our understanding of future engagement levels is similarly limited.

In another letter to investors, management confirmed that Q1 trends vital to its platform appear to have worsened. The letter stated:

Its third quarter results posted some glimmers of hope and perhaps also some of disquiet. Revenue was up 43% on the same quarter in 2020 to $633m and income turned a $94m loss into a $94m profit. But the areas that will be key to analysts are the number of users – the MAU – and how much they spend the average revenue per user .

These latest figures show the MAU grew 1% globally to 444 million but fell 10% in the key home market of the US. On the plus side the home users are spending more – the ARPU for the US growing 44% to $5.55 and globally the rise was 37% to $1.41. A company statement added: “The evolution of COVID-19 and the impact of the pandemic unwind on engagement remain unknown.”
