An Example That Proves Instagram Hashtags Work

Now, heres a quick story that puts things into perspective.

Someone on our team is getting married in May.

He and his fiancée searched far and wide on Google for a photographer for their wedding and went through a ton of sites.

But according to them, they actually found the photographer for their wedding on Instagram.

Yep, thats right.

So take it from us, your target audience is using hashtags on Instagram and you want to be there when they search.

Now, heres a pro tip for you:

When doing your hashtag research, be sure to click on a few of them and take a look at the hashtags being used by your competitors on their top-performing posts.

You may find a few hashtags you didnt think of yet.

Ok, now that we know how to find hashtags for our brand, lets move on to the next question.

Should You Care About The Hashtag Sizes

Should you use only small hashtags?

Should you avoid big hashtags?

In my experience:

Dont worry about hashtag size too much.

The most important is to use hashtags that make sense for your account or business.

This is because Instagram has the new Search feature.

It allows people to type ANYTHING in the Instagram Search Bar.

Hashtags are keywords. So even if a hashtag is big, its still an important keyword you should use.

Plus, if you have a small Instagram account, you can still rank in the Top Post tab of a big hashtag page.

Heres the proof:

I searched for #pearlearrings. It is a big hashtag.

The second post on top is from a small account, @lume.atelier. It is ranking next to huge accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers.

It could be YOU ranking on the front page of a big hashtag!

So take your chance with big hashtags too!

How Many Hashtags Should I Use on Instagram Reels

Hashtags on create a clickable link to every post that has used that hashtag, usually organized by top posts and most recent posts. This creates an online page for that hashtags topic, making it easy for other users to find similar posts and browse through their desired content.

Using hashtags allows your post to be seen by other users, bringing higher visibility to your post and hopefully better engagement.

Smart use of hashtags can help your post get more attention, resulting in more likes, comments, and new followers. If youre looking to grow your audience or share your personal or company brand, hashtags are the best way to reach more users.

Hashtags are also a useful tool for inspiration or to browse through topics that interest you. If youre looking for ideas for your own post or just exploring Instagram for entertainment, you can search a hashtag that appeals to you and scroll away.

Instagram now allows users to follow hashtags like they would personal accounts. Following a hashtag intersperses top posts from that hashtag throughout your feed. This increases the chance of your post being seen via hashtags, and also allows users to delve further into their favorite hashtags by featuring them on their feed daily.

Experiment: How Many Instagram Hashtags Should You Really Use

Will adding more hashtags to your Instagram posts help you reach more people? Or is 3-5 hashtags per post the sweet spot?

One of the most important steps in building trust in a relationship is consistency.

someone should probably mention that to Instagram.

The folks over at Instagrams HQ have been shaking things up as of late. The corporate-backed recently recommended that its best practice to only use 3 to 5 hashtags per post.

Let me repeat that: Three! To! Five!

While this seems like an innocuous hot tip, its a perplexing thing to hear directly from a platform that allows you to use up to 30 hashtags in each post.

This revelation from someone we trusted just begs so many questions: Was this a test? Are you tricking us? If 3 to 5 is the amount you actually want us to use why give us the freedom to use 30 tags in the first place?

But though the ground beneath us may be shaky, and the truth may be slipping through our fingers like sand in one of those timers that you lose immediately from your Pictionary set, I refuse to join the thousands of social media managers across the globe in their existential spiral over this.

Instead, Im getting my groove back, a.k.a, taking action to figure out whats really, for-real, accurately true: Are 5 hashtags optimal, or 30?

Experiment time!

So Why Does Instagram Now Recommend Only 3

While you may be relieved by the idea that you no longer need to come up with 30 hashtags per post, other users are freaking out right now about the potential impact reducing the number of hashtags may have on the performance of their content.

And rightly so.

Each hashtag is an opportunity to be discovered, is it not? So surely reducing the number opportunities to be found is an issue?

There may be more to this recommendation than meets the eye.

Many accounts use hashtags wrong – filling their quota with random tags that are completely unrelated to their post topic, account niche or audience.

Remember, the primary goal of hashtags is to ensure that the right content is served to the right people – i.e. those who want to see it and who will interact with it.

When content is categorised incorrectly , search results turn up hundreds of unrelated posts and your feed is filled with content you have zero interest in seeing.

This seriously taints the user experience. A great user experience is key to keeping people on the app for longer .

By reducing the recommended number of hashtags, Instagram is encouraging users to be more considered with their selections and use only the most relevant hashtags in their posts.

This will improve the user experience by ensuring fresh content appears in feeds and by helping the right posts show up in search results.

How To Choose Your Instagram Hashtag Mix

Hashtags can provide a wide range of information about your content. Here are 10 types of Instagram hashtags to consider:

  • Branded hashtags that are specific to your business
  • Campaign hashtags that are unique to a marketing initiative
  • UGC hashtags that are designed for customers to use
  • Event hashtags that promote happenings and holidays
  • Location hashtags that indicate where something is happeningfor local customers
  • Daily hashtags that reflect themes like #MondayMotivation
  • Industry hashtags that explain your field or type of work
  • Community hashtags that share information and amplify voices
  • Descriptive hashtags that clarify the topic of the content
  • Phrase hashtags that include a message or an inspirational statement

The total number of hashtags you can use on Instagram depends on the content type. Feed posts and reels support 30 hashtags, while stories can include 10 hashtags. Although its easy to assume that you should add as many as possible, thats not necessarily best practice.

Many experienced marketers recommend maxing out hashtags or using a certain number of keywords from various categories. However, Instagram recommends keeping hashtags to a minimum. A recent specifically recommends using three to five hashtags instead of adding 10 or 20.

Why Are Hashtags Important

Hashtags are essentially Instagram’s sorting process. With around 95 million photos posted on Instagram every day, it’s difficult for Instagram to efficiently deliver the right content to the right people. Hashtags help your post get discovered by viewers most interested in seeing it.

Krystal Gillespie, HubSpot’s Social Media Community Manager, explains the importance of hashtags this way: “Hashtags are like a funnel. For instance, #marketing is incredibly broad and attracts all types of posts. We’ve found #digitalmarketing or #marketingmotivation gives us a more specific, targeted reach. The audience searching for these hashtags are also trying to narrow their search to what we offer related to marketing, so we’re actually reaching more of the right people.”

Essentially, hashtags are a better way to categorize your posts. They help you reach a target audience, and more importantly, they help your target audience find you. These users are more likely to engage with your post because it is exactly what they were looking for.

Using The Same Account Daily

As we mentioned before, theres a significant difference between a trusted account and a brand new account. In general, the older and more active your Instagram account is, the more actions you will be allowed to perform daily. This is a rare case where slow and steady can win the race if you use your limited actions wisely early on.

Put plainly, the longer you own your Instagram page, and the more you use it daily, the more actions you will be able to perform daily.

If you are creating an Instagram page for your business and dont want to be restricted to the daily limits of a brand new account, if you have a personal Instagram account, you could convert your personal account into a page for your business. This way, you can perform more actions from your business account from day one.

This is obviously easier if your business is tied to your name . Otherwise, if you know that you will soon be creating your own business, create an Instagram account and begin warming it up as soon as you can.

Whats The Optimal Number

This is a tricky question because the answer varies wildly. Within a caption, its recommended to use 1-3 hashtags. If you enter more hashtags as the first comment, then up to 30 hashtags would be acceptable. However, this is not to say that you should use 30 hashtags for every post. This leads us to the next tip.
