Sure, Twitter has a relatively new 280-character limit. But just because Twitter doubled its 140-character limit doesn’t mean you should use all of them.

When To Use Twitter Cards

We recommend A/B testing Twitter cards against traditional tweet creative for all campaigns. Most Twitter cards are designed for one specific goal, but some can be used for multiple objectives. Regardless, these cards need to be created first, and then referenced via URL into the tweet copy itself.

In all instances, Twitter cards will use somebut not allof your 140-character limit, so make sure you account for this. Its highly recommended to combine your cards with captivating copy to create the most memorable and engaging promoted tweets.

Weve compiled everything you need to know about Twitter Cards into a new reference guide, which improves upon and supersedes the wildly popular guide AdParlor published in August 2014.

Any Secrets For Sentences On Twitter

Zarrella also found that retweets are heavier on nouns, proper nouns and third-person verbs than tweets in general. That suggests that newsy, headline-style tweetssubject, verb, objectare more likely to go viral.

Don’t change the subject.

Want to see your tweet go viral? Write mostly simple sentences.

And don’t drop the punctuation. Some 98 percent of retweets contain some form of punctuation, compared with 86 percent of normal tweets, Zarrella found.

Punctuate, period.

So don’t forget the colons, periods, commas and hyphens. But do forget semicolons”the only unretweetable punctuation mark,” according to Zarrella.

Engagements Of Shorter And Longer Tweets:

Following up on the latest data released about twitter, only 1% of the tweets are reaching up to 280 character limit and around 12% of the tweets are just more than 140 characters in a tweet. Only 5% of the audience is using more than 190 characters in their tweets. However, twitter was immensely trolled by its users for keeping its character limit too short and when it has doubled its character limit; most of the people are not using it. The most common length that was allowed for a tweet back was 140 characters that were around 34 characters. The tweet length is now increased up to 280 characters but most of the tweets are still 33 characters long.. Twitter also witnessed the effect of making twice as much the characters count in terms of peoples writing styles. Twitter then noticed that people are now using fewer abbreviations than before. Words like u, ur and gr8 are now not used as before and people are using proper words. It is also observed that people now use more thank you and please words at the end of tweets due to increased length. The use of these words has been increased by around 54% and 23% respectively. Twitter has also found out that the use of question mark in the tweet has been increased by 30%. The other interesting thing is that these tweets are getting more replies and answers.

Twitter Users Respond To 280

Twitter selects a small number of accounts to test long tweets, and users instantly rise to the challenge of wordier jokes

Twitters has not been received with universal acclaim. Even make that especially on Twitter.

Jack Dorsey, founder of , broke the news on Wednesday.

This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence!

Not every Twitter user will have access to the new character limit just yet. In a social divide, Twitter has selected only a small number of accounts to test the new long tweet feature. And in a matter of seconds, Twitter users inevitably took to Twitter to quip with the much wordier messages.

How To Use Our Twitter Counter

To use our Twitter counter, simply type your text in the textbox above. You will see the tweet length displayed as “Characters typed” above along with the “Characters remaining”. The tweet length limit is 280 characters. Note that Twitter does not count words, it counts characters. If you need a Twitter word counter you can use the counter on our homepage to get the word count. But again, the character count is what Twitter uses not the Twitter word count.

After you type your text in the textbox, you can see an additional 4 metrics. They are the Twitter bio character limit, the Twitter DM character limit, the Twitter profile name character limit and the Twitter username character limit. All these limits will show up in red once the limit has been exceeded.

Below the textbox there are three buttons. The “clear text” button which will delete all text from the textbox, the “copy text” button which will copy all text inside the textbox and the “Post Tweet” button. The “Post Tweet” button will post whatever is inside the textbox onto Twitter provided you are already signed in to your Twitter account.

Whats Changed Full Details On Twitters 140 Character Update

This update has been much anticipated by many Twitter users and the full details of whats changed:

  • Replies: When replying to a Tweet, @names will no longer count toward the 140-character count. This will make having conversations on Twitter easier and more straightforward, no more penny-pinching your words to ensure they reach the whole group.
  • Media attachments: A URL at the end of Tweets generated from attaching photos, a video, GIF, poll, Quote Tweet, or DM deep link will not count towards the character limit .
  • Retweet and Quote Tweet yourself: Well be enabling the Retweet button on your own Tweets, so you can easily Retweet or Quote Tweet yourself when you want to share a new reflection or feel like a really good one went unnoticed.
  • These changes will help simplify the rules around Tweets that start with a username. New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers. If you want a reply to be seen by all your followers, you will be able to Retweet it to signal that you intend for it to be viewed more broadly.

Twitter Now Counts Every Emoji As Equal

New changes on Twitter mean that for the first time each emoji counts as the same number of characters in a tweet. Previously , , and would have used 2, 4, and 9 characters respectively.

The limit of 280 characters remains intact for latin characters, and as before, each emoji uses two characters. This change means that instead of some emojis using two characters and other using up to 14 characters, all will now use a consistent two characters.

Prior to this update, here was how many characters each type of emoji used:

  • Emoji: 2

  • Emoji + gender + skin tone: 9

  • Family with 3 people: 8

  • Family with 4 people: 11

  • Country Flag: 4

  • Rainbow Flag: 7

  • Subdivision Flag: 14

While not a deliberate effort to discourage certain emoji types, the net result of the previous character counter meant that people using emojis with skin tones would be left with fewer characters remaining to tweet than those who used the default yellow emojis.

Under Twitter’s new system, all of the emoji types are equal and use two characters, no matter how many code points are used:

  • Emoji: 2

  • Emoji + gender + skin tone: 2

  • Family with 3 people: 2

  • Family with 4 people: 2

  • Country Flag: 2

  • Rainbow Flag: 2

  • Subdivision Flag: 2

Above: Prior to this update, some emojis could use as many as 14 characters on Twitter.

How Long Should Words Be On Twitter

Retweets actually have more syllables than ordinary tweets1.62 syllables per word vs. 1.58, Zarrella found. Outside the Twitterverse, experts suggest aiming for two-syllable words, so both measures are still, understandably, simple.

Want your tweets to spread? Write mostly in one- and two-syllable words.

And skip the slang. Lazy language like lol, gonna and hey are among the 20 least retweetable words in the English language, Zarrella found. So cut the vernacular.

Twitter To Test Doubling Tweet Length To 280 Characters

    By Mike Isaac

SAN FRANCISCO Twitters defining attribute has long been its brevity: 140 characters in a post and no more.

That is now set to change. Twitter said on Tuesday that it would test extending the text limit of a post on its service to 280 characters.

Twitter said the goal was to eliminate what it viewed as constraints that kept people from tweeting more frequently. One significant barrier, according to Twitters internal research, has been the stringent limit on character count.

When people dont have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting, Twitter said in a blog post.

It is a significant moment for the 11-year-old Twitter, which has been trying to figure out how to change the social media service without alienating the people who have embraced its short format.

The idea of extending the length of Twitter posts has been contentious internally, batted around among product groups that are trying to find ways to persuade people to use the service more frequently. At 328 million users, Twitter has been criticized for its inability to attract more people. Investors have grown nervous, as that slowing of user growth has affected the companys revenue.

Twitter is now preparing for a backlash from those who might take issue with a 280-character tweet.

The negative reaction was swift, however. Some on Twitter proclaimed it a terrible idea.
