Back To Basics: Visual Content
Visual content refers to the photos, infographics or videos you share to attract fans and followers or grow your list. Historically, visuals have performed better than text in social media marketing.
- According to Twitter, tweets that include photos can see 35% more retweets than those without.
- Social Bakers reports that videos uploaded natively on Facebook now get the most reach.
The main problem with visual content is that not everyone has the skills or resources required to create amazing visuals that will actually make your target consumer stop mid-scroll and look at – and then read – your posts.
The most obvious answer is to hire someone to create your content or commit time to learning how to create it yourself. But what if you don’t have the time or energy for either of these options? Say hello to content curation, and reposting content for your social media feed.

How To Decide What You Should Repost On Instagram
Cool, so youre ready to repost some content on Instagram, but which photos should you share?
Its important to ensure you have a strategy in place when it comes to reposting and also an idea on how the content you repost fits into your wider Instagram strategy. A few factors its important to think about include:
Composition refers to the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work.
When it comes to sharing images from other Instagram accounts, think about your brands style of composition and whether each image fits in here. For example, if all of your images feature a solid background, it might not fit in with your visual style to repost an image with a textured background.
Many brands use a set color palette on Instagram and moving away from your brand style may make your reposted content feel a little out of place. For example, Everlane tends to use soft palette and grey/black/white colors:
If Everlane were to repost an image with a bright, vibrant color scheme it wouldnt feel aligned with Everlanes brand.

Am I Stealing Someone Elses Ideas If I Repost Their Content
The internet is considered a public space. If you were walking down the street and overheard something brilliant and then repeated it at lunch, no one would say you were stealing. But, there is a common courtesy you should extend to the original poster, which is to give them credit for their original content. Tag them in a comment, the caption, or use a reposting app in order to give credit where it is due. This helps prevent original posters from feeling like youre trying to pass their photos or content off as your own handy work.
Do I Need To Ask The Content Creator To Repost
Thats up to you. Like we mentioned before, the internet is a public space. As long as you give credit to the original poster, you should be good, however, there are benefits to asking permission. If youre hoping to repost from a popular influencer on social media, its not a bad tactic to get on their radar by asking to utilize their content. It could be the beginning of a symbiotic relationship. Also, if the influencer knows youre going to be reposting their content, ask that they comment on your repost to give you more credit with your followers.

What Is A Repost Chain
Repost chains can take a variety of names from repost groups, to mutual support chains, repost networks, repost trade groups, and more. At the core the idea is the same: a repost chain is a group of artists, labels, influencers or collectives who join a group and agree to repost each others music on SoundCloud.

What Should I Be Reposting
Consider your own audience when searching for content to repost. Its tempting to see something you love personally and instantly want to share with your followersperhaps youre planning a European vacation and see a breathtaking photo of an ancient castle. Yes! Totally share worthy! Not really. You own a high-end car detailing company that has nothing to do with travel, and while the photo is beautiful, has nothing to do with your own services and has no place on your feed. Another tip is to repost content that had high engagement rates. Try to choose posts that have a healthy number of likes or that sparked good conversation in the comments.
Why & How To Curate Content For Your Social Media Feed
Content curation is finding content outside of your own original content to share from your accounts. Influencers and regular consumers are getting better and better at creating really high quality content – the kind of content that attracts fresh eyes to your social media channels.
Curating user content is a great way to:
- Fill in content gaps
- Get the quality of visuals you may need
- Show your customers love
- Encourage users to post more about your brand .
Remember, when you are looking for content to use in your feed, keep it relevant to your brand, and choose high quality material. You can integrate content created by your customers, clients, partners or with influencer-generated content. While curating your feed, remember that striking a balance between original and curated content is key and may take a little fiddling around with. Test and see what your audience reacts to. Why Should I Be Reposting Content In The First Place
Logistically, its a simple way to fill in content gaps in your own social media plan. Someone else has already done the deep thinking required to create a quality post, so why reinvent the wheel? Reposting content from influencers especially ensures youre using quality visuals you may be lacking otherwise. As it relates to your brand, showing your customers that extra bit of attention makes them feel valued and like you appreciate their promotion of your business. It also encourages them to continue posting on your behalf since you took the time to recognize theyd done so.
Repost Etiquette: The Nitty Gritty
Using other people’s content can get a little hazy when it comes to the internet, which is why there are some basic rules you can follow to cover your butt.
To be the safest, assume the content creator/publisher owns the rights to their content. Networks like Twitter and Instagram include clauses within their terms of service that enable users to retain the rights to what they post, but also give the networks rights to use the content posted with no fee or royalty. For you this means that even if someone has used a branded hashtag or tagged your brand in a photo and it seems like this is enough permission to use the photo in your own feed, that may not always be the case.
If you’ve worked with influencers on a campaign, or you’ve created a contest to which users submit photos, then breathe a little easier as these images are fair game to repost – just make sure this is clearly stated within the rules or guidelines on the campaign.
If this isn’t the case keep the following rules in mind when reposting:

But before we get to repost etiquette let’s talk about why you’d want to repost content created by others, starting with the importance of visual content in social media marketing.
How Do I Find Relevant Content To Repost
Do a hashtag search! Search hashtags that are relevant to your business to find posts that will be appropriate for your followers. You should also start promoting your own branded hashtags on social media, online, and in-store to encourage more user-generated content specific to your company. Once youve trained your regular followers to include these tags when posting about your company, youll end up with a lot more original content to choose from and theyll serve as free advertising for you as well.

What Makes A Good Repost Chain
Effectiveness and results would be the biggest indicators but thats something that would only come through experience. Two things that stood out in my conversations were ensuring the repost chain limits the number of reposts per day to reduce spam, and screening members to ensure they are only adding quality to the group. For some that means manually screening, as Michael tells us, Im very careful what I repost and who joins my chain. I also check every track before scheduling to make sure the track fits the accounts reposting.

Don’t Alter Content Dramatically
Or at all without asking for permission. If the content attracted you, it seems like a slap in the face to the creator to rip it and completely rework it, and since the creator owns the rights, it can potentially get you into legal trouble. If you see a different vision or take off point from where the content is, try asking the creator for liberty to tweak and post the original. Again you want to build trust with your audience, not make them feel taken advantage of.

Are Repost Chains Free
Like anything in the industry this is dependent on who you talk to. The general idea is that these groups/chains are created as a form of mutual support. Members are usually only accepted into the chain based on their following/size/work. That being said there is still a cost. By joining a repost chain youre losing control of the curation of your SoundCloud page with music being automatically reposted on your behalf. For some this is a trade-off thats too rich. Speaking with Lost Dogz, they shared their thoughts on the promotional tactic,Repost chains are undeniably effective for reach however, not something we focus on or that aligns with our brand. We rely on the music, brotherhood & fans to push our content and its worked so far for us. Theres no doubt using a repost chain will get your track out to a wider audience, but we would rather have genuine support on Lost Dog/Dog Pound releases rather than automated support.
How Do Repost Chains Work
Of the artists and repost chain managers I spoke to, all were using an automated system. This ensures efficiency and allows them to scale with ease. Users join the repost chain , once they have been added, they have the ability to submit their music at a given frequency and it will be reposted across the networks channels. In return, the new member allows the automated system to repost a given number of songs automatically on their account.

Are Repost Chains Ruining Soundcloud
Ask five different people and youll get five different answers. We did, and have opted to list them below to provide a wide range of perspectives.
I can see why some people say this to a degree I am even inclined to agree with this statement but I do not think it is the concept of repost chains that has ruined SoundCloud but the abuse of them. There are simply far too many filled with far too much music that the majority of people within these chains just dont like, but are willing to accept for the purpose of plays. Afrosamuraiist, Bonsai Collective
Ruin is a harsh term, there are still plenty of gems to be found but chains are definitely saturating your feed and making it more difficult to discover new music. We dont like the idea of reposting music on our pages that we havent heard. It can be misleading to your fans and the fact that people brag about reposts theyve gotten from a chain is really sad. Its just another superficial aspect of music right now that we arent buying into. Lost Dogz
SoundCloud changed greatly because of reposts and did take a turn for the worst but there is still a group of amazing online promoters who know how to use these features in positive ways which in turn makes SoundCloud a better platform. Jerremy , Above/Below The Surface
