Telegram is a free instant messaging service with added emphasis on security. The open-source, cross-platform service comes with end-to-end encrypted video calling, VoIP, file sharing, and several other features.
Additionally, the platform also provides optional end-to-end encrypted secret chats. The Telegram app for Android has more than 500 million downloads on the Play Store.
The platform allows you to block other people from contacting you again. In case a user blocks you, you will not be able to send messages to that user. Here are some of the ways that you can decipher if someone has blocked you on Telegram.
Being Blocked By Someone
There are a couple of indicators that you may be blocked:
- You can no longer see a contact’s last seen or online in the chat window. Learn more here.
- You do not see updates to a contact’s profile photo.
- Any messages sent to a contact who has blocked you will always show one check mark , and never show a second check mark .
- Any calls you attempt to place will not go through.
If you see all of the indicators above for a contact, this could mean that the user is blocking you. However, there are other possibilities. We have made this intentionally ambiguous in order to protect your privacy when you block someone. Thus, we cannot tell you if you are being blocked by someone else.

How To Know If Someone Blocked You On Messenger
When you use the Messenger app on your phone or in a browser on your desktop, you are probably familiar with the status icons next to the messages you send. There are four such icons:
- An unfilled, empty circle means the message has not been sent. This is typically because you don’t have any internet access when you try to send a message.
- An unfilled icon with a check mark means the message has been sent but not delivered to the recipient.
- A check mark icon that’s filled in means the message has been delivered.
- An icon that’s filled with your recipient’s profile picture means it has been read.
As long as the recipient is logged into Facebook, your message should be delivered within a few moments, which means you’ll see the check mark icon’s filled-in version. Of course, it might not be read for a while your recipient needs to open Messenger and view the message thread for that to happen.
If you send a message to someone and the message is not delivered, meaning that only an unfilled check mark icon appears, it generally means one of two things:
- The user has not logged into Facebook.
- The user has blocked you on Messenger.
It’s not always possible to tell the difference, but if you see that the recipient has posted to his or her Facebook page or comments on other people’s posts, that implies he or she is logged into Facebook. If your message remains undelivered, you are probably blocked.
How Does Blocking Work On Phones
You only have a few options to find out if someone blocked you from texting them. You could try messaging them through WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Snapchat, Facebook, or one of the numerous other applications that use your phone number to enable communication.
Message the person on a different medium to see if they answer. If you see a Delivered message or equivalent but get no reply, its a sign that theyre ignoring you.
The person who blocked you has no idea the communication was ever attempted. Newer phones make it so easy to block someone that all you have to do is click on the contact or phone number and hit Block Caller.

We all know you can block someones number from calling and texting you, but can you tell if someone blocked you from just texting them?
You definitely arent the first person to wonder this. Lets take a look at whether or not you can tell if someone blocked you from sending them text messages.
Text Messaging Vs Chat Apps
Cell networks are not configured to report back to the sender when delivering SMS. The data layer was added to the legacy voice layer when mobile devices first began demanding data as well as voice. Cell networks were never designed for the kind of feedback necessary to allow you to know if your message was delivered or not.
When sending a text message, you compose and send the message on your phone, the phone OS packages it up so the cell network can understand it, and then the message is sent. The closest receiving cell tower acknowledges your message and adds a mark to your account to keep track of how many SMS you have sent for billing. That is the only feedback mechanism currently available in the cell network.
Purpose-built messaging networks such as iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram do things differently. They had the advantage of a clear plan before building their network and feedback to sender was one of the key elements they all wanted to include.
Cell networks evolved whereas chat networks could be built from the ground up with the primary vision in mind. Thats why you see Delivered or Read when you send messages using these apps. Its also why third-party chat apps tend to offer more features and a better experience than factory-installed SMS messaging apps.
You may use the data network of your cell company but the messaging is controlled by the servers owned by the chat app.
