LinkedIn often tells people when you view their profiles and shows them your name. That person may even get an email or alert saying you viewed their profile. Heres how to browse privately without LinkedIn sharing this information.

It may seem silly to prefer anonymity on a social network, but other social networks dont work this way. Facebook and Twitter dont send someone a notification whenever you view their profile.

To find this option, head to the website, click your profile icon on the top bar, and select Settings & Privacy.

Select how you want to appear. You can select Anonymous LinkedIn Member for pure private browsing or select your private profile characteristics, which may appear as just Someone on LinkedIn or something more specific.

People will still see that someone viewed their profile after you view their profilebut theyll see only that an anonymous person viewed it.

You may be wondering what to do when someone checks out your profile on LinkedIn. Should you message them or connect with them or not?

What, if anything, can you do to capitalize on those who have looked at your profile? It could be a hiring manager you’d be thrilled to hear from, someone who could help you network your way to a new job at a desirable company, or an old colleague you’d love to get back in touch with.

When you see the connection and understand why they viewed you or how they found your profile, you’ll have more information to help you decide if or how to respond.

Should I Contact Someone Who Views My Profile

So theres a bunch of people that seem to be for some reason interested in you. Now what? Should you message them right away or just connect with them? Or rather not?

It all depends on whos the one looking at your profile. It can be an old colleague youd love to get back in touch with, a hiring manager youd be thrilled to hear from or someone who could potentially help you network your way to a new job at your dream company.

How To Adjust Your Settings When You’re Viewing People’s Profiles

Go to your Settings & Privacy page by clicking the down arrow under your photo on the top toolbar and selecting Privacy & Settings> Privacy> Profile viewing options from the drop-down menu. There are three options to choose from.

Personally, I want my name and headline to show up in every possible place. Hey, it’s free advertising. But you may have a different strategy.

If you choose full disclosure but want to be anonymous for a short time while you stalk, say, a competitor, change your setting to Anonymous LinkedIn Member while you gather your competitive intelligence. But don’t forget to change it back when you’re done, because on the free account LinkedIn penalizes you for choosing anonymous. When you’re in anonymous mode on the free version of LinkedIn, you cannot see who looked at your profile. They also remove the five people who looked at your profile immediately prior to your choice to remain anonymous. So you’ll want to check out the list before changing your setting..

Info On Individual Viewers

I can get some information about my viewer without actually clicking on his/her profile. In the case below: a 2nd degree connection, who is a law school student in MN looked at my profile 4 days ago.

The secret sauce here is that I get a rough idea about how he came to view my profile. In this case, he clicked on my name from his Homepage. That means one of my updates or a comment I made landed on his Home Feed. Since he is not a 1st connection, I assume that it landed on his Home Feed because of one of our shared connections. When I hover my mouse over the lower right corner of his photo, I see we have 2 shared connections. I can click on that to see who they are.

As I mentioned, in this case I know he found me and clicked on my profile from his homepage. LinkedIn also tells us if they came from a LinkedIn search query, the People You May Know section, People Similar to You prompt, a LinkedIn app or Other. Other means some outside website link or search engine like Google. Its my understanding that when its blank, someone typed your name in the search bar at the top of their page.

And, of course, LinkedIn prompts me to engage with the person by adding the big blue connect button. When my viewer is a 1st connection, it says Send a message

These analytics from LinkedIn can be really helpful, depending on your goals for using LinkedIn. In another post, Ill share some ideas for how to incorporate this info into your LinkedIn strategy.

You can see more people who have viewed your Profile if you pay for LinkedIn Premium. I address the question, should I get LinkedIn Premium here.

But what does Found You Via LinkedIn Search mean?

It means someone found you after specifically searching for your name in the LinkedIn search bar. LinkedIn is, just as Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms are, a type of search engine or database after all. This is why it is important to make sure your LinkedIn name is accurate and reflective of your actual name, as opposed to a nickname. Youre only as searchable as you are accessible!
