Posts from 2nd and sometimes 3rd-degree connections can also appear in your feed if the LinkedIn algorithms think you will find them interesting or relevant. They might also be likely to appear if your 1st-degree connections react with them in some way by either reacting or commenting on them. The Youre more likely to see posts by connections that you interact with often. On the flip side, you are unlikely ever to see content from people that you have no interaction with. And that is something very important to appreciate.

Similarly, youre more likely to attract profile views from the LinkedIn homepage if you increase your engagement with your Connections content, especially content they share in the news feed.

When Should I Reach Out

You sure dont want to come off as a LinkedIn weirdo thats impatiently waiting till someone pays a visit to their profile and then bombards the viewer with questions like How did you find me? or Why were you checking me out?

Found You Via Linkedin Search

How to See Who Viewed Your Linkedin Profile (Simple Steps)

Youve seen it often, Im sure? When you scroll to the Your Dashboard section on your LinkedIn Profile and click on the blue number above Who viewed your profile, youll see whos viewed your profile and, in italics, how they found you. You can see more people who have viewed your profile if you pay for LinkedIn Premium. I address the question, in another post. But in summary, on the free version of LinkedIn, you only get to see the last five people who have viewed your profile.

But what does Found You Via LinkedIn Search actually mean?

It means someone found you after specifically searching for your name in the LinkedIn search bar. LinkedIn is, just as Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms are, a type of search engine or database after all. This is why it is important to make sure your LinkedIn name is accurate and reflective of your actual name, as opposed to a nickname. Youre only as searchable as you are accessible! I strongly believe that adding miscellaneous data to your name field will make you less likely to be found, so I dont encourage it. It is technically against LinkedIns terms of service too, so be very careful if you decide to be clever with your name field. I know people who have their profile taken down as a result of making this error!

There are other features similar to Found to Via LinkedIn Search too.

Use your profile headline to let people know youre on the market. Use a clear, consider sentence to outline what youre looking for and go from there. For example, Plastic surgeon with 10 years experience beautifying Hollywood now looking for ugly people in Florida or Auto mechanic with 8 years NASCAR experience looking to make your motor hum in Nebraska. You get the idea.

Info On Individual Viewers

I can get some information about my viewer without actually clicking on his/her profile. In the case below: a 2nd degree connection, who is a law school student in MN looked at my profile 4 days ago.

The secret sauce here is that I get a rough idea about how he came to view my profile. In this case, he clicked on my name from his Homepage. That means one of my updates or a comment I made landed on his Home Feed. Since he is not a 1st connection, I assume that it landed on his Home Feed because of one of our shared connections. When I hover my mouse over the lower right corner of his photo, I see we have 2 shared connections. I can click on that to see who they are.

As I mentioned, in this case I know he found me and clicked on my profile from his homepage. LinkedIn also tells us if they came from a LinkedIn search query, the People You May Know section, People Similar to You prompt, a LinkedIn app or Other. Other means some outside website link or search engine like Google. Its my understanding that when its blank, someone typed your name in the search bar at the top of their page.

And, of course, LinkedIn prompts me to engage with the person by adding the big blue connect button. When my viewer is a 1st connection, it says Send a message

These analytics from LinkedIn can be really helpful, depending on your goals for using LinkedIn. In another post, Ill share some ideas for how to incorporate this info into your LinkedIn strategy.
